Amsterdam Closes Smoke Shops

Posted by Sinden Lee - Monday, November 24, 2008 12:27 PM

All good things must come to an end..sometimes.

By the end of 2011, a fifth of Amsterdam's coffee shops selling marijuana will be closed down because they are within 250 meters of a school.

Obviously, this Dutch coffee shop policy is facing a lot of criticism as cities near Belgian boarders say they will close their shops to to fight drug tourism and crime.

Amsterdam has cooperated with 32 other Dutch mayors and city council representatives to back a continuation of "soft drugs" policy of toleration.

But they also want better rules on the sale and trade of marijuana. While they agreed that a ban on the substance isn't the solution, its use should be discouraged.

The current policy allows an individual to carry less than five grams of the substance.

One mayor proposed having the coffee shops moved to the edge of the city. He cited that the problem isn't that his country has these coffee shops, rather, it's that the other countries don't.

The government will convene next year and evaluate its soft and hard drugs policy.

If it were legal in the states, these shops would be robbed everyday.

Posted by bipolarfly - Monday, November 24, 2008 1:25 PM

actually, it may be legal in the states soon. Denver, Orange County, even up here in Seattle have medicinal pot, which only a moron couldn't get a license for. Imagine the taxing they could do to it, and how much money will be saved from locking pot heads up.

@ Sinden Lee

Good piece, but I don't know if y'all are racing to get your pieces up or something, but the clarity of some of these pieces is suffering. A little more editing would be nice. Thanx :) Obviously I can not be held to this standard being merely a humble consumer lol

Are Dutch children unable to walk more than 250 meters? ;)

Closing down the coffeeshops opens a huge door for gangs to take over the cannabis supply.

If you can't end the demand for cannabis then you'd sure as anything better not try to end its legal supply! Or non-smokers and smokers will suffer side by side, and school kids will have unfettered access to cannabis that never existed before.

its understandable about the school issue. he does make a great point that its not the problem that they do, its the problem the other countries don't. it would change the world for the better if they made it legal period. you can use both plants for millions of things. kill the need of foreign oil and create 100,000,000 of jobs. blah blah blah... but that's too good of an idea right!it will never happen do to the fact we as the world ruled by the corporations... and when we take money out of there pocket... lets say they would kill to keep it the way it is....

Posted by UndeadEwok - Monday, November 24, 2008 1:34 PM

plus when they take way the access of the legal demand, it creates bigger issues. why? black market...

bipolarfly, MMJ is fine but I'm a proud *recreational* user and I want to be treated exactly the same as any alcohol user.

MJ is the safest recreational drug on the planet and it should NOT be controlled by the very policy that *failed* for alcohol.

End the prohibition and control marijuana with the *same laws* we use for alcohol!!

I don't think gangs are a problem. Their only closing the ones by schools. The people that want it would walk another 100 steps to the next shop. Plus I'm sure a bunch that would be closed will just relocate. I think the real problem is that by doing this it brings into question if it really is something that should be legal in general if it isn't legal around a school.

bah. They're, their, there. Hate when I do that.

Posted by plasticgiantcatbear - Monday, November 24, 2008 3:13 PM

Well, it's not legal in Amsterdam the same way it isn't legal anywhere per se. It's tolerated, and that's why they have much fewer drug problems than in the States or other countries.

I think it'd do a lot of good for the US to be a little more like Amsterdam.

Horrible title as 4/5ths of them are staying open.

Posted by ADAMBOLIAN - Tuesday, November 25, 2008 10:06 AM

IT DOES MAKE GOOD SENSE, I MEAN WHO WOULD WANT KIDS ON THEIR WAY TO SCHOOL TO WALK PAST COFFESHOPS. BUT REALLY HOW IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT FROM KIDS IN THE US OR AMSTERDAM WALKING PAST A BAR SERVIING ALCOHOL. ONE OTHER THING WHY DOES THE U.S. NOT BAN BEER ADVERTRISMENTS DURING SPORTS GAMES? IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THOSE ADS GET TO IMPRESSONABLE KIDS AND SUGGEST THIEIR MINDS.I GUESS IT IS ALL RELITIVE.
