19-Year Old Broadcasts His Suicide Live On Justin.tv

Posted by Sinden Lee - Friday, November 21, 2008 9:50 AM

A 19-year old man has needlessly committed suicide while broadcasting himself on the Internet.

Abraham K. Biggs allegedly was goaded and mocked by commentators on Justin.tv, a streaming video site, as he overdosed on pills while on camera. He was on air, breathing for hours, until viewers notified police.

The video continued until police and EMT entered and blocked the camera.

Mr. Bigg's death has been confirmed with the Broward County medical examiner in Florida.

Justin.tv's CEO, Michael Seibel said, "As for the broadcaster incident last night, we don’t comment on individual videos, however, our policy prohibits inappropriate content on Justin.tv. We rely on the community to flag videos that they feel are objectionable. Once a video is flagged, it is reviewed and quickly removed from the system if it violates our Terms of Use."

The deceased had previously posted a suicide note. There's also R.I.P. comments on Mr. Biggs' MySpace page.

This isn't the first known account where an Internet suicide has ocurred. Last year, a British man hung himself after he was allegedly goaded by users on Paltalk.  A movie was released earlier this year on the topic of live-streamed killings called Untraceable.

Justin.tv has gotten itself in hot water with another aspect of live broadcast, and that's copyright infringement. It appears the Premier League may be threatening legal action against them over unauthorized broadcasts of soccer games.

Justin.tv says they do takedown requests according to the law. Unfortunately, with live broadcasts, sometimes they're taken down a little too late.

hmm....seems like so legal action needs to be done. those watching and tuanting should get into some sort of trouble...and then them not callin the police sooner......that site should be brought down.

Humanity once again proves that we are disgusting in nature and should all be wiped clean of this Earth. At least Mr. Bigg doesn't need to be previewed to the horror that is mankind anymore. God help us all.

The internet is filled with 50% Alcholics and Drug users and 50% Perverts, and for you to take anything anybody say unofficially on the internet to the heart!! Shows that person character this was tragic and maybe could have been prevented but it sounds like this was sumthing he was planning to do.

Keep this in mind, G4, when AOTS puts the videos of the youtube kid with the lisp and braces on TV and mocks him.

I can't stand him either. He's annoying and foul-mouthed. Still, there's only so much humiliation a person can take.

Posted by ryanbaer - Friday, November 21, 2008 10:37 AM

Did anyone ever see the movie Untraceable? It came out some time last year, and it was about a guy who would kill people live on camera in really gruesome ways (such as submerging them in water that was slowly having battery acid added to it). He broadcasted it over the internet and allowed people to chat as the person died. The more hits the site received, the faster the person died.
Most the of the stuff people were saying as they were watching a person die was pretty sick; laughing, mocking, etc. This story reminds me of that, and that's pretty messed up.

Attention Whore!!! All I can say is he was dedicated.

I saw that movie a few weeks ago.
It was a funny and sick movie like the human race but not as when i saw the saw movies.
too bad for the R-tard who killed him self.
people who kill them self and other are R-tards.

Two things jump out to me in this matter.

1) It's natural selection. I don't know the reasons behind his choice, but it was a stupid one. It's sad and senseless and a waste of life.

2) Someone is going to copycat this stunt, only next time it will be bloodier and more of a spectacle.

Condolences to his family, and RIP. Any life lost unnecessarily is a loss to us all. That being said this kind of thing was inevitable and will continue. It's said all suicide threats should be taken seriously and this illustrates why. It is sad that it took so long for EMS to be contacted, it sounds as though if action had been taken sooner he might have been saved (although IMO it is his right to decide to take his OWN life). However, this may have been merely a cry for help, he may have been relying on viewers to report it. Who knows? It's rather inconsiderate to foist that responsibility on other people but people feel guilty about asking for help unless they're in a life or death situation. It's saddening. However, life goes on, and this just makes me more determined to enjoy my own.

Posted by machriderx - Friday, November 21, 2008 12:40 PM

Nobody takes it seriously when someone says they are going to kill themselves because a lot of people say they are going to kill themselves (and don't, just do it as a hoax) just to get a reaction out of people and troll message boards.

So when a person who legitimately wants to kill themself comes along, how do you tell if its another person playing a prank, or... a person who really wants to kill themself?

That's why people end up saying, go do it, because they think that they won't. But sadly, while that may work for people playing a hoax, you never know when someone is actually planning on doing it and is serious about it.

Posted by Dirtstarr - Friday, November 21, 2008 12:41 PM

I'm with r_pad. Life is not easy, nor should it be. If you can't make it past 19...that would your choice (and you always have a choice) but you will not get my sympathies because the fairy tale blog you read isn't true.

It's sad that people are so influenced by social pressure they have to take their life, But don't F-up my day.

Posted by machriderx - Friday, November 21, 2008 12:43 PM

Anyway, my condolences go out to this guy and his family. RIP

But I'm just saying, you can't tell what's what on the internet. One person might come along and say they're going to kill themselves and it could end up being a hoax. Then another can come along and it can be for real. I wonder if those people really wanted him to die, or if they thought it was just another person playing a joke as usual over the internet. I would think (and hope) it was the former, not the latter.

Posted by machriderx - Friday, November 21, 2008 12:45 PM

Er, I meant the latter not the former.

Posted by Ieyke - Friday, November 21, 2008 12:49 PM

All pity is wasted in this instance. His choice, however stupid. So be it. The weak only survive by the will of others. He was left alone. Darwin wins.

Those who watched him die either thought it was fake, or they should be ashamed for encouraging it rather than hindering it.

Us commenting here *shrug*, not our fault humanity is full of morally bankrupt idiots and suicidal idiots. Just shake your head in disbelief, shrug, know that it happened, move on.

Posted by OBELIX - Friday, November 21, 2008 1:51 PM

@ staychisel and elcoocooi25: Personally I think the whole works is as messed up as all hell... I would never goad someone into suicide... I have my own troubles, being a schizophrenic and all, so if I were ever to see someone try to kill himself/herself on live streaming video, I would tell them to calm down, relax, and drop whatever they were planning on ending their own lives with... And I would hope to GOD that someone else would do the same for me... Unfortunately, I don't think I can count on anyone else here to do as I would for anyone... And to r_pad, Manifest37, and everyone else who called this guy weak for ending his own life, I cannot BELIEVE you would be so wrapped up in your "natural selection" that you could say such despicable things... This story and its responses have shown me just how flawed and disgusting Social Darwinism can be... How deep in the gullet of "an amoral universe" can humanity get?-- OBELIX

Posted by Slash5150 - Friday, November 21, 2008 2:06 PM

With this, Justin.tv should be held partially accountable but they can't fully be held accountable because there isn't someone on there all the time.

I feel that anyone who watched at the time (and there ARE IP records so they can be found) should be held accountable as...well...essentially an accessory to murder because they were watching it and whether they thought it was fake or not, should have taken action. Its like if someone says they're going to go shoot up a school. If someone knew and DIDN'T do anything, they should be held accountable as an accessory.

The 19 year old..well..he's dead but hes truly truly disturbing. Personally, I feel the media SHOULD NOT pay any attention to this story after today because he probably did it so he could be IN the news.

Posted by SolidSnyder - Friday, November 21, 2008 2:49 PM

Damn the world. This is horrifying beyond all measure. Stupid damn internet, stupid damn people, stupid damn everything. This is up there with the Holocaust; it's very symbolic, that it has come to this. How disappointing, that God's creation has gone so far astray. It had promise. Reminds me of Rapture from "BioShock."

It's like we are just a progressive phase of hsitory, this civilization is slowly declining. Not against our own will, however. We have the full capability to fix things, and yet, so few try. Few compared to the necessary minimum.

"Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so." -Douglas Adams

I don't meant to rant, I don't mean to offend, but this is simply horrifying.

"although i sympathize for anyone who would want to take their own life, the fact that he did it live on the internet makes him more sick and disturbing than anyone who laughed or mocked him while doing it. this"

No. Putting it up live for everyone to see is obviously a cry for help. Beforehand, he gave everyone his personal information. They didn't do a thing but watch. This is not sick or disturbing at all, when you think about it. He obviously had problems, and if he was really serious about doing it, he'd do it privately. He wanted to see if anyone cared. I think that people egging him on was the final nail in his coffin. It's really sad that these things happen, that we've become this emotionally detached. Certain people are able to sit back and watch someone kill themselves, without even thinking about helping. This is terrible.

Posted by ThataUFO - Friday, November 21, 2008 3:15 PM

I have no sympathy for people who commit suicide. It's easier to die than to live. They seem to forget about the other people in their lives that will be affected by it. It just proves that they are selfish bastards who think their problems are the worst in the world. One of my best friends dad killed himself, when my friend was in the house. It screwed him up for years.
F people who commit suicide. Their bodies should be donated to science.

Posted by Zaxous - Friday, November 21, 2008 3:16 PM

I could never commit suicide. I love myself too damn much.

Posted by sps73 - Friday, November 21, 2008 4:01 PM

People who commit suicide seem to be selfish because of what they put there loved ones through but the fact is they have a deep phscological problem that needs/needed attention before the inevidable happens!

This is a very sad story! A young guy who had his whole life in front of him, may he rest in peace!

And as far as you critics on the subject here: You don't know what is going thru these peoples minds because it is not you! Have a heart will yiz! Too many cold people in this world today, DAMN!!

But other than that, agreed on all counts.

Posted by WhiteWolfAssassin - Friday, November 21, 2008 4:47 PM

That is just disturbing, to watch someone actually commit suicide. Suicide is no laughing matter and find it insulting if someone states that the person was pathetic if they commited suicide. You need to understand the state of the person's mental health and situation to better understand them. Every person in the world has dealt with deppression, but many people cannot handle bouts of depression or the pressure in today's world. So next time someone decides to bully someone, take into account that you could be a contributing factor of a person commiting suicide.

Posted by r_pad - Friday, November 21, 2008 6:20 PM

@MasterChief3784 Yes, I understand that people deal with pressure, depression, and difficulty. Some have it far worse than others. The kid could afford a computer and an Internet connection, which puts him in a far better position than millions of people in the world. There are people that don't have adequate food, clothing, and shelter that still manage to make it through the day.

@OBELIX See above.

If this is true, and people just watched him die instead of getting him help, I have just lost all faith in humanity. It takes the worst kind of evil to derive enjoyment from watching someone die. If you know anyone who just watched this happen and didn't do anyting to stop it you should report them to the police. Someone that sick in the head is a threat to society and should no longer see the light of day.

From what I saw on CNN, the full story is not being told above by G4. There are details that would have led many people to NOT think that this guy was actually killing himself. I suggest everyone try to get more details of the story 1st.

Not to put G4 down in any way, but they have simply left out a few details.

Like, the guy was said to have taken pills offscreen and then laid in bed infront of the camera and simply looked like he was sleeping. It's not like all the viewers saw him take a handfull of pills and try to kill himself with a weapon. Many thought his was joking on the net.

Still, I didn't see the video but I am sure a lot of those who did thought it was just another internet prank.

For those that thought it was for real, which it obviously was, shame on them for edging him on.

its a sad news byte. but suicide is always an avoidable tradgedy. there are no victims but the families involved.
life's a bitch we all know that. its the hardest game ever made. but we cant quit the game cuz the level we're stuck on is too hard.
you gotta keep on and see it through. you gotta see the big picture and i don't agree when hear of suicides. it's a waste.

@Moonbaseone The link to newteevee has a longer version of the story. A source is given so that readers can get more details on the story.

@spiderchuck84 You're missing the point. The story isn't that the kid killed himself; it's that he did so in a live streaming broadcast through a relatively modern service like justin.tv.

Posted by blakezilla - Sunday, November 23, 2008 2:56 PM

I think that this is a slippery slope. For all of you saying that he is disturbed, well obviously the last place to seek empathy is on the internet from total strangers. I am willing to bet that he thought some of his own friends were watching though. Either way why risk your life on a laggy internet connection if you really DO want someone to help you? That leads me to believe that he was gonna do it somehow someway. Also this kinda stuff is like a grain of sand on the beach on the internet. How is anybody (other than folks that know him) supposed to know this is real? The website should be held partially accountable, but not the viewers (unless they knew him). Also my personal opinion for suicide prospects is what makes your life any worse than anybody elses? Put yourself in somebody else shoes, there is always worse than what you have going on. I not trying to upset anybody but take a step back, a deep breathe and enjoy your own life. Dont blame others for this guys problems.

Posted by cheezybred - Sunday, November 23, 2008 5:06 PM

Forget the fact that people egged him on; that's human nature. How messed up in the head do you actually have to be to kill yourself while other people are watching?

But it's not like it hasn't happened before. I'm surprised no one has brought up Bud Dwyer. You know, the subject that "Hey Man Nice Shot" is about? Makes you think about what we have to look forward to in the next 20-some years.

I just have one question.

Did he lose his Ipod?

:3

Posted by smellysack - Sunday, November 23, 2008 8:32 PM

I'm not sure what's more disturbing; the fact that this happened or the lack of humanity in the people posting some of these comments. I'm a full blown a-hole(according to a lot of people) but I am not going to judge someone that has taken their life! I have not been in their shoes.

Yes, he may have had a computer, internet or all sorts of things and that makes him better off than other people? Very materialistic, what about friends, family, people that just were nice to him instead of just spitting in his face. Ultimately, hundreds of good praise can but undone by one negative.

may he rest in peace
