Hayao Miyazaki Criticizes Manga Mad Prime Minister

Posted by Sinden Lee - Thursday, November 20, 2008 12:41 PM

Oscar-winning, Japanese director, Hayao Miyazaki, recently made a critical, if not altogether derisive comment against his Prime Minister Taro Aso's enthusiasm for manga comic books.

Mr. Miyazaki said children should spend more time "experiencing nature than getting engrossed in video games and TV."

It's a bit of an ironic statement coming from the world renown animator best known for his iconic feature films such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.

His recurrent themes, however, do feature humanity's relationship to nature and technology, as it struggles to maintain a conscientious set of values.

In a news conference, he was uncharacteristically unrestrained in his contempt for the Prime Minister Aso's yen for reading comics, "It's an embarrassment. That's something that should be done in private."

The 68 year old Premiere's enthusiasm for Japanese comics has gained him a following among fellow manga fans. He even launched an international manga award to help promote the genre. It's currently a $5.2 billion industry in Japan.

Despite its popularity, Mr. Miyazaki advocates children learning practical skills like lighting fires and using knives before learning how to read or count--as a backlash to "virtual reality: television, video games, e-mail, mobile phones and manga."

"I think this saps children of their strength," he said, admitting that there is a bit of a paradox to his opinion given his choice of vocation.

I love his movies and i can see where he's coming from. From what i read i think he's telling the Prime Minster he's spending too much money on manga and i don't know about this but telling kids to buy them.

i have to say that i agree with miyazaki, kids should be learning practical skills rather than how to text message or send an email. if the world keeps moving in the way it is, pretty soon were gonna be totally relying on technology, and thats when well be the most vulnerable. just look at wall-e lol. as for the rest of us, americans, europeans, asians, whoever - learn some survival skills.. im not just talkin to the kids either. im glad to see that theres some other people out there who feel the same way.

"manga comics" isn't that a bit redundant?
as for Miyazaki(love his works), this is just a case of the pot calling the kettle black

This is quite paradoxical indeed. But Miyazaki's claims about children not experiencing nature is a non-sequiter. I don't see how the enjoyment of manga directly detracts from an interest in nature. It isn't like the arts are anything new. This is kind of like Da Vinci criticizing people for visiting art museums for the same reason.

And besides that, manga is literature, whereas videogames and tv are more entertainment orientated (but still somewhat artistic). The material just needs to be insightful and deep, or at least engaging on some intellectual level.

If you ask me, the guy is experiencing the Leonard Nemoy effect; he has become overexposed to the neckbeards, weaboos, and obsessed losers of his fandom. Just stop reading your fan mail for a bit, Miyazaki, and this should go away soon.

I don't mean to sound racist or anything, because it really is just a cultural thing, but Japan's geeks are REAL losers. Just look up character body pillows on google (or better yet, ebay) and tell me that you aren't witnessing the most ronery pathetic beings known to man. I dare you.
