Pic Of The New Enterprise Released

Posted by Joseph Baxter - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 10:58 AM

Entertainment Weekly has released an exclusive new pic of the new starship Enterprise from the upcoming Star Trek reboot. Says director/producer J.J. Abrams:

If you're going to do Star Trek, there are many things you cannot change. The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you're going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?

Always interested in hard-hitting analysis here at G4, I've made this comparison photo that will allow us to fully appreciate (or poo-poo) what has been done. Personally, I think the change looks tremendous in its ability to update towards current aesthetic sensibilities, while maintaining the integrity of the original's basic design. It's futuristic, yet at the same time, still "rough."

nooooooooooo they changed the look of the ship slightly! this movie is gonna suck!

oh wait, its star trek so it really is gonna suck.

Posted by Kirk359 - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:18 AM

EPIC FAIL!!
it looks like crap! "update towards current aesthetic sensibilities" wtf!!! whose "currnet sensibilities" are you talking about? Yours? This isnt a "new" Trek show, its an old one, the design, the basic concept of the ship is already made. millions of fans fell in love with the "old" design, and the same ones will hate the "new" one.
The primary hull( the round circle thing) looks to dang big for the secondary hull's shape. its off.

Clouded by the dark side the director is

Posted by cmdluke - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:24 AM

wow, I was just kidding but I guess fanboys really are going to be pissed about this.

i think the update looks pretty good.

I really didn't expect people to start going into why the design doesn't work but I forgot its star trek. you trekkies are waaaay worse than us star wars fans.

@kirk359, do you have a schematic or something? do you have an engineering degree? how do you know the design is off?

Posted by drfatesoasis - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:25 AM

What sense does this make. If it were a re-boot then yeah do what ever you want but Nemoy is in it as Spock putting it right smack in the preexisting universe. So how come when Spock goes back in time nothing looks the same. If your going to re-boot do it but don't make nonsense for the sake of updating.

This ship looks great but what a waste on another prequel. Thanks for ruining something else by just existing George Lucus. =(

Posted by cmdluke - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:29 AM

@drfatesoasis

how does george lucas effect this in any way?

Posted by Baxter - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:31 AM

@ Kirk359

Uh, "current sensibilities" which cater more towards rounded (as opposed to boxy) edges and sleeker "wind-resistant" arrangements (although wind is obviously moot in space.) The design makes it more conducive for battle. The old one LOOKS like a fragile model kit (which it was in actuality.)

The design isn't radically different, so I don't know why you're so up in arms. Do you honestly think Abrams should have just made it identical, with the warp nacelles (which btw each look like something a woman might keep hidden in her drawer) held on by sticks, while the saucer section is attached by an excessively long and thin connecting section?

looks sweet to me

Remember this movie also involes alternate time lines, which is why Chechov is in the cast from the get go. Also, it gives leeway on the ship design and other astetic choices.

Pr equals have become all the rage since the ill fated Star Wars episode 1(even the Texas chainsaw massacre had a prequel recently. When the 2001 a space odyssey came out years ago paramount looked at it's success and said "what do we have that could do that" they then made the first Star Trek motion picture in a simalare style to 2001. The movie is considered by most fans to be the pinnacle of bad trek movies.

Now In 2008 Paramount in it's infinite wisdom is saying to it's self "why isn't Star Trek puling in the numbers that Star Wars is. I know We'll do what Lucas did and Make movies about the origin of (Vader) Captain Kirk."

Posted by drfatesoasis - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:43 AM

Like I said if this were a reboot I would be all for it but it's not. They are going back in time to when it all began to a time that we have seen many times before. If your not going to stay true to the source material why bother doing it at all.

DS9 did a time travel episode where they met Kirk and the ship and sets stayed the same. If you don't think the originals will translate then make it a reboot, or don't do it. Or god forbid come up with an original idea to move the series forward.

Anyone else see inspiration from 1950's car designs? Especially in the engine/warp nacelles.

Posted by Postal1111 - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:44 AM

if you look at the old drawings and schematics, the original NCC-1701 was 48m long. Now if you look at the pictures of the new ship, the N in NCC is more that 48m long. EPIC FAIL FOR DESTRUCTION OF SOURCE MATERIAL

The only way you'll get me to buy a ticket now, is if there's nudity.

Posted by cmdluke - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:46 AM

@drfatesoasis

"I know We'll do what Lucas did and Make movies about the origin of (Vader) Captain Kirk."

the only difference there being that the story of how Vader became Vader already existed, it just hadn't been made yet. Lucas wrote the back story to Vader in order to flush the character out before making the originals.

Posted by collinE - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:47 AM

I'm not a big fan of star trek, so it looks pretty good to me. I like it.

Posted by drfatesoasis - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:48 AM

cmdluke

So then you agree that they shouldn't be making this or are you just defending the crappy Star Wars prequels. I'm having trouble identifying your stance.

Posted by cmdluke - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:48 AM

@Postal1111

"the original NCC-1701 was 48m long. Now if you look at the pictures of the new ship, the N in NCC is more that 48m long."

EPIC FAIL to you for knowing that.

Posted by cmdluke - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 11:53 AM

I'm just saying that George Lucas has no influence on this either way.

this will be crap any way

Posted by Jamagh - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:05 PM

It looks like it should be the Enterprise "F"... Or is it up to "G" now?

Posted by ObSoL33tSNiiPer - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:08 PM

either way star trek sucks big time

Posted by MaximusPaynicus - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:10 PM

...looks good. So far, everything about this movie has looked awesome and may give Trek the shot in the arm that it desperately needs.

Also, I'm glad they decided to ignore every minor complaint that the Trekkies have lodged against the look and feel of the film so far. Being a lifelong Trekkie myself, I more than understand the fact that pandering to the lifelong fans is what led to both 'Enterprise' and 'Star Trek: Nemesis', so...

Posted by IBloodstormI - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:28 PM

Oh no, it doesn't look like a coffee cup and a frisbee attached to a couple flash lights.

you guys are ridiculous.

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:38 PM

.... looks like borg technology just behind the deflector dish.... and they made it too fancy looking... there is a distinct class look to each generation of federation ship... and that new on does not fit the class that it is supposed to be from... there are a billion Trekies out there... you couldn't consult a few of them to get the ship right.... this movie will fail...

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 12:41 PM

@MaximusPaynicus

I'm pretty sure enterprise was not aimed at trekies... if that were the case scott whats his face would not have been captain... and that's just the first thing on a long list...

Anybody who actually cares about the updates needs to get out of their parent's basement, or off their buddy's couch and go get a life and probably laid. Not that condone premarital sex or anything, just offering something else to do!

No matter what trekkies will complain. OMG IT'S 2 MM TOO LONG!!!

Dude. Grow up.

It'll be good, it won't be great, it won't be bad, the movie will just be 'good.' I'm going to see it and I'm not a trekkie fan at all, that's the kind of 'glow' it has.

Posted by therealgnu - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 2:22 PM

looks good.

Posted by WhiteWolfAssassin - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 4:34 PM

I have been a Trek fan for most of my life and I like it. It's a mix of the classic Enterprise with the one in the films. I think Trekkies need to understand this franchise is close to dying and you have make some sacrafices to save it. So it may not be completely like you wanted, but you need to understand that change is good. That's why the franchise has sunk, because it has not had any drastic changes. Also, Abrams is introducing this universe to a new generation. If he succeeds, we will see a new geneartion of Trek fans and the rebirth of a dying franchise. So it's either this or the death of the Star Trek franchise. Because the franchise cannot continue in the current shape it is in without drastic changes. Also Trek fans, Leonard Nimoy is supporting what Abrams is doing for the franchise.

Personaly I think they did a good job of keeping the old-look but updated it just enough so it won't look outdated

Posted by addtheninth - Wednesday, November 12, 2008 4:48 PM

If you're so upset about how the ship looks, why don't you pop your retainers in, hitch up those taped glasses and pop in some VHS vids of the original show? You'll get your fix of old crap and can spend your time debating whether or not there were 52 original episodes or 53...while the rest of us are enjoying what looks to be a fun film.

As for the new design, I'm loving it ; )

A) If you took the movie Enterprise and removed the "refit" , Which ship would it look like?

B) If you had a model budget of $500.oo, some scrap wood, and some Bondo , Which one then?

I like the Old E. and the new one looks a little bendy , But I'm sure everyone will agree that the only Enterprise that should never have been had Scott Bakula for the Captain.

fix the warp nacells

Posted by Kirk359 - Thursday, November 13, 2008 11:57 PM

No i dont have a degree in engernerring. (hell i cant even spell the word) It just looks wrong. yes, the orginal model was fragile, yes it caught fire and blew up. However, it was designed like ass! JJ abrams is also in charge of lost, the horrid movie cloversuck. What does that tell you? Its more then likely going to have cameras shakeing all over the place and make people sick.

The trek line up does need a good shot in the arm. However, by not listening to fans, (by not sticking true to a formula that works and is interested in something other then money) you will get an epic fail. This movie would rock, but instead it will suck and killing that which is aswomeness :P

Posted by Kirk359 - Thursday, November 13, 2008 11:58 PM

Also, it looks like a 50's car with those wide fins and the headlights all wide and such.
