Jaden Smith To Star In 'Karate Kid' Remake

Columbia Pictures is set to (buzz word coming up) re-boot the Karate Kid franchise. This time however, it will be designed as a star vehicle for young Jaden Smith (Son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.)

With the original film's producer Jerry Weintraub aboard, the film will shoot next year in among other cities, Beijing. (???) Despite being placed in a completely different setting, the film will supposedly stay true to key elements of the original plot. (IE: Kid gets bullied, learns karate, pwns them in their own tourney, etc.)

Fancying myself an expert in all things Karate Kid (I recite lines regularly, almost to my detriment), the purist in me is obviously offended by a number of things (well, primarily the fact that they're using MY Karate Kid, bastardizing it, and turning it into a vanity piece for celebrity offspring.) HOWEVER, there's a part of me that is relieved because it seems that it will be radically different from the classics. That tells me that they're not trying to leech off the Karate Kid story (rather, just the name.) I'm not sure how they're going to pull off a 10 year old boy (oh right, did I mention Jaden's only 10?) getting his ass handed to him on multiple occasions by a savage group of bullies, but...whatever. He's apparently a karate practitioner and is up to the task (whatever that task may be.)

Classic line with more relevance than ever: "What's the matter? Mommy not here to dress ya? (See what I mean?)
