Updating news on the original rumor that Brett Ratner was to direct an update of Conan, the news has now been officially confirmed.
"Remake," I suppose is a subjective term since it seems unlikely that Ratner would simply remake the 1982 John Milius film which featured Governor Schwarzenegger at the height of his "pumped-upedness." The audience, nonetheless will view it as such.
The good news for Mr. Ratner, is that there is no hugely visible cult status to that Conan film or its sequels (so fanboy backlash should be at a minimum.) So while most people will be thinking "Arnold," this will give Ratner a license to get creative and not get too tied down to the source material from either Marvel comics or the films from the 80's. (Again, this is good news for Ratner. Whether it's good news for us remains to be seen.) If as he hints, he is leaning towards a script centered on the original pulp stories from the 1930's, he may indeed be looking to break the "Arnold" mold.
Give 'em hell, Brett.
