Mark Millar Pitches 8-Hour Superman "Epic"

Posted October 30, 2008 - By Joseph Baxter

Comic writer Mark Millar has pitched an ambitious idea of how he would revive the Superman franchise. Bizarro? Brainiac? Parasite? Nope. What Millar has proposed, is an 8-hour epic which will chronicle the beginnings of Superman, his life on Krypton, spanning all the way to the end where Superman is prospectively left as the last being left on Earth. Apparently, Millar has been talking with an unnamed "big Hollywood action director" about what he calls his "Magnum Opus" which he would plan to release as three separate films. According to Millar:

It's gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him. The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now.

At the risk of editorializing, it's kind of baffling why Millar thinks people would be so interested to see films that delve so deeply (seemingly pretentiously) into the origin of Superman, something that has been done again and again. We would have to assume that a great deal of the first film itself would be filled mostly with Krypton scenes that will not seem relevant to your average moviegoer just wishing to see "the new Superman movie."

We'll see, I guess...
