It turns out that teenagers are falling asleep in school because of their PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS systems, not because of boring English teachers that are taking out their failed literary careers on helpless students. Wall Street Journal blogger Sue Shellenbarger writes:
"Already blamed for problems ranging from obesity to distractibility, tech gear is now being faulted as a cause of sleep loss in teens."
Instead of catching a good night's rest, teenagers are web surfing, text messaging, listening to music, and playing portable game systems in their bedrooms. This leads to nodding off in class and general fatigue. The article Shellenbarger cites indicates that poor sleep quality also leads to elevated blood pressure.
The study is alarming and disturbing. Being a teenager is already a tall order. Being a sleep-deprived teenager with high-blood pressure is even tougher. Kids, gaming is indeed awesome, but sleep is pretty excellent too. Catch your Z's!
