Activision is spending mega dollars on pimping Guitar Hero World Tour with a new ad featuring what is sure to be very pricey professional athletes. The 30-second spot stars Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, Alex Rodriguez, and Tony Hawk in a Risky Business spoof. OK, wha?
We're thinking maybe they've got their marketing wires crossed here. They got four SPORTS stars to push a MUSIC videogame with a 25 year-old movie reference.
It works even if you've never seen Risky Business and they do spin the ad to be about letting your inner rock god come out, which justifies using athletes, but the bottom line on cost must have been enormous.
They will, however, no doubt recover the costs as sales are strong for the Guitar Hero franchise. GH: World Tour is a 4-person rock rhythm game that is developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. It was released on October 26, 2008 for the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3.
