Free Dr. Pepper W/ ‘Chinese Democracy’

Posted by Ty Colfax - Thursday, October 23, 2008 10:32 AM

So, there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is that Dr. Pepper, the greatest soda on planet Earth, is giving away 20 oz. bottles of their concoction on November 23, 2008. The bad news is it's in celebration of the "planned" release date for Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy album.

The album, which has been in development and re-recording sessions for a whopping 17 years, has seen many a release date come and go, but with the album actually completed, it's now a matter of Axl just letting it go out into the world.

We were hoping the promotion would mean that when you show up at your local Wherehouse Music, or perhaps Tower Records, you could purchase your Chinese Democracy and be handed a cold, crisp, sugary Dr. Pepper straight outta the big bucket of ice right next to the counter. But that's not how they do it down in Plano, TX where Dr. Pepper HQ is located. Instead, you'll have 24 hours starting on November 23 to go to the Dr. Pepper web site and give up your personal information so they can mail you a coupon in 4-6 weeks.

We've overheard part of the album already at a party and we're not that into it, but if you like the sweeping, pretentious balladry of late GNR and NIN ripoffs, it might be for you. The only thing that can possibly bring you back to reality after listening to Chinese Democracy is the caramelly, caffeinated smoothness of the 23 distinct flavors of a Dr. Pepper. Folks, just buy one, put on Lies as loud as it will go, and cry yourself to sleep.

Tower records? I wish. That was the best mainstream record store.

the "Greatest soda on planet Earth" is the "greatest overestimate on planet Earth"

All hail the DP!

sorry, but to me DR. PEPPER taste like when you throw up cough medicin, plus carbonation

Posted by Firestorm76 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 11:16 AM

mmmm cough medicine

I've heard the title track, and it ain't good. The opening riff is okay, but once Axl gets into the mix, the whole track goes to hell.

If the rest of the album is like that song, I'm going to use the CD as a coaster.

dr. pepper = bomb

Axl can't even sing any more. All the tracks I've heard sound like a machine singing for him. Not even in a cool Peter Frampton way, but more like Microsoft Sam. Trent Reznor honestly should sue Axl for making a crappy NIN wanna-be album. 17 years in the making, 17 years wasted. I'm going to listen to Velvet Revolver.

I'm doubtful about this album. Their last one, "The Speghetti Incident" was more excruciating than going to a 3 year olds piano recital.

BUT! if Metallica can come back from the crapfest that was St Anger, then maybe there's hope for GNR...

Posted by Skunkhair - Thursday, October 23, 2008 12:03 PM

I think I'll wait 17 years to buy this album.

Posted by n00bSector5 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 12:17 PM

@Skunkhair
Good thinking...
Even better: i'm going to give my $19 that I would have spent on this CD to the Dancing Homeless Guy on the way home...

Why is there a new GnR story on the Feed every few days? Who gives two craps about Axl Rose anymore? Live and let die, guys. Let it die.

Posted by bipolarfly - Thursday, October 23, 2008 1:07 PM

God... I hope the apocalypse comes before that day....

Posted by Redd75 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 1:16 PM

Ok, two things:
A. Are you sure that's not Adam Savage in the photo?
B. I thought Mt. Dew was the greatest soda on Earth?

Posted by Ieyke - Thursday, October 23, 2008 1:39 PM

Mountain Dew is kinda crappy. Dr. Pepper is way better, but nothing holds a candle to the glorious power of good root beer.

Posted by Dark62442 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 1:55 PM

Let's just all ignore the Chinese Democracy part and focus on the FREE DR PEPPER! We don't have to buy the CD to get the coupon right?

@leyke Amen to that! But there are so many different ideas of what "good" RB is, cause homemade RB doesn't taste a thing like the A&W/Barqs/etc. brands *shrugs*

Posted by bootlegbaker - Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:33 PM

no seriously, is this the line for free Dr. Pepper?

Posted by SEPHIROTH111111 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:35 PM

I agree with Dark. GnR sucks now, but we don't have to buy the album to get the Dr. Pepper.

Posted by at0mict0ast - Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:46 PM

I love Dr. Pepper, and Old Guns N' Roses is my favorite band so this is close to being the "most epic awesome event the world has ever seen of all time" but new GnR is absolutely terrible, its just Axl and a bunch of guys he thought were good musicians. Sure, Bucket head is a good guitarist, but he's not slash.

Posted by MorganL4 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 2:58 PM

Thats sad, Chinese Demorcacy has become such a joke in the last 15 years that they have to entice you to buy it by giving away free soda pop?. am i the only one who finds this pathetic?

Posted by dantekratos300 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 3:04 PM

I think Coke is the greatest Soda in the world

Posted by Skunkhair - Thursday, October 23, 2008 4:51 PM

@dantekratos300 word! That's why coke catches music stars in their prime. They were all like "Guns 'n Roses? WTF is Guns N Roses? Do you know who we are? We're muthereffen Coke! You take your Pistols N Pansies elsewhere!"

Posted by Steelslug - Thursday, October 23, 2008 5:09 PM

gnr sucked back in the day, they will suck even worse now.drunk posers do not make good musicians.metallica's new album sucks too,btw wtf were they thinking letting hammet write the whole freakin album? lame by mattallica standards imo.

Posted by littleb242 - Thursday, October 23, 2008 5:27 PM

soda is bad for you, drink your V/8

Posted by TheNickLovin - Thursday, October 23, 2008 5:34 PM

I can't freaking believe you people! I love Guns n' Roses, always have. The new single is gold, and I know that I will be buying the album on November 13th. And, I don't even like Dr. Pepper. I am looking forward to November 13th because I actually want the album.
