Xbox Live Arcade File Size Limit Evaluated On A "Case-By-Case Basis"

Posted by Brian Leahy - Thursday, October 23, 2008 10:22 AM

When Portal: Still Alive dropped on Xbox LIVE Arcade yesterday, we noticed that the file size for the game was clocking in close to 700MB. This confused us as we were under the impression that Microsoft had put a limit of 350MB on downloadable games for XBLA.

This is not the case. We reached out to Microsoft for a comment and they let us know that they, "have set file limits as a general guideline. An important part Xbox LIVE Arcade is easy access, and keeping file size down is a vital part of that. Equally important is offering titles with superior gameplay. [They] weigh both considerations on a case-by-case basis, and will make exceptions when [it] makes sense to ensure the best customer experience."

There you go. The 350MB limit is not really a limit at all, and Microsoft is willing to let high-profile games like Portal go above that limit if it means bringing games to LIVE Arcade.

This is a good way for Microsoft to stay competitive as Sony is aggressively pursuing full digital distribution as a way of releasing PS3 games with titles like SOCOM: Confrontation, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, and EA's Burnout: Paradise available to download.

It never should have been a rule in the first place. It was just MS bean counters breaking down hard drive space into dollars. Well, they should just make affordable hard drives available because I haven't been buying on Live because of space issues. I think this is one area where overcharging for peripherals is actually costing them money.

So MS said it was a 'rule' but it never really was a 'rule'? Congratulations on lying to XBLA customers, hinting they wouldn't ever get larger worthwhile games.

I guess honestly, the Xbox360 owners should thank Sony for forcing MS to admit this this rule for the lie it was, since their willingness on the large game downloads forced MS's hand on this one.

(That being said, I'll still prefer the good ol' fashioned hardware/software in my hands.. unless it's one of those 'no-choice' issues... that and the size factor)

wouldn't it just be easier to just pony up and put an adequate HDD in each 360.... Sony doesn't limit the size and generally are more open to allowing game devs do what they want... but hey keep defending the 360 as the greatest console... PS3 isn't perfect... but it's a lot more open than the 360....

oh and no surprise here... like MS is going to turn away portal... hopefully more and more small teams see this and move over to the PS3.

Hey, just to let everyone know there's a way to make a 20gb xbox drive into a 120gb for about $50.00. I'm not going to get into details but page 109 in October's issue of pcworld magazine tells you. It'll save $$$

all o has to say about the whole "oh and no surprise here... like MS is going to turn away portal... hopefully more and more small teams see this and move over to the PS3." thats just dumb, xbox is cheaper, more games, better online store, and better interface.

Posted by HamLord - Thursday, October 23, 2008 12:24 PM

and XNA, do you see any thing like that for the ps3? no but it is still a good system ... just a little rough around the edges.

Posted by Bookshelf - Thursday, October 23, 2008 1:52 PM

ps3 ownes for its "openness" let the devs do anything they want.

LOl I upgraded my ps3 to 320 gigs for under $80.00. Think about that Xbox owners the ps3 is better

A) whats with all the xbox vs. ps3 arguements, stop whining like fanboys and just play your games. jeez. Your like a bunch of 10-year olds.

B) While Portal is the closest thing to perfect a game will EVER get (besides maybe portal 2) i'm afraid that I find it stupid to make this XBLA and not just a DLC map pack.

@maxpengoo

As to A) Won't happen. People who flame are the dorks IRL that get picked on all the time, then they come on here and flame to make themselves feel better.
It's sad but you just can't stop them. They will be the only life after a nuclear bomb.

"thats just dumb, xbox is cheaper,"

you get what you pay for... and if you compare apples to apples the PS3 is a better deal... remember the elite is still $399

"more games," if you want to count shovelware... as for quality titles they have about the same amount... and shortly the PS3 will be pulling ahead.

"better online store" not sure how you figure... I'd say they are pretty equal... if not PSN store having a little edge...

"and better interface" Pure opinion there... as I disagree. No fact could prove either of us wrong.
