Sessler's Soapbox: Gateway Gaming

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 1:35 PM

With the emergence of the casual gamer and games targeted specifically at that demographic, there are a lot of new people paying attention to the gaming industry. We're always happy to welcome new-comers into our little coven of nerd, but sometimes they have a bit of trouble making the leap into more hardcore, traditional games.

Well in this week's Sessler's Soapbox, the Sess is going to give you a double dose of his sage wisdom. First, a small cautionary tale about gaming and spinal health. But the real topic this week is how Fable II might be the perfect game to help usher your little brother or mother or girlfriend into the world of hardcore gaming. Much like Wii games before it, Fable II has set the entry barrier low enough that almost anyone who can hold a controller can experience the incredible story and experience of the game. Not only that, but the combat, writing, and progression are still refined enough to please the most hardcore of gamers. Have we reached common ground? Is this a game that your girlfriend will WANT to watch you play? Check out the video and see if you agree with the Sess.

I'm surprised that he is married. Does he have kids?

lol@KPrejean00

Way to insult the guy.

My gateway game was The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. I can't wait to watch the video posted when I get home. (I can't watch at work.) I also can't wait to play Fable II when my boyfriend is through with it. :)

I agree about his advice on posture.

I was playing Dead Space for several hours straight during the night, and the next day my back was killing me.

What the sess said is true! What he says also applys to LittleBigPlanet. LBP will get the casual gamer and get them imersed into making and playing their own levels and other peoples levels. Its the time in the industry when developers finaly get it right!

Is that a burn on Adam? I'm not surprised. People get married. Lah Deh Dah.

How is Fable 2 the shrooms of gaming?

Posted by Suhaila - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 4:40 PM

Yes he's married. Shouldln't be a surprise since he's been wearing a wedding ring for well over a year. Plus, if you watched the last stickam he verified that he was married to the chick from the Weezy and the Swish podcast video (back then was his gf). Sigh, people keep up with these things! And no he doesn't have kids.

Gaming posture is important as well. Totally need to put some Fable 2 time in tonight even though I really should spend time getting stuff together for the movers on Friday and getting ready for my drive to CA on Tuesday.

God I wanna get this game, but I know WotLK's gonna suck me back into an unhealthy wow addiction in a month

Posted by ell_ess_free - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 6:24 PM

LOL the shrooms of gaming?? i freakn wish. awesome analogy tho p.s. my brother screwed up his back from playing dead space for like 10 hours straight poor bastard

Posted by HedgehogEmoness - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 6:40 PM

lol I'm not surprised hes married. The Sess is Hott ^_^

Great point adam. I think that someones posture could critcly get affected by gaming. I've noticed it in myself.

great soap box.

With all the self-deficating humor he does, I'm not surprised people don't know he's married. I thought it was obvious during the Halo 3 launch when he tells his wife he's coming home. I wonder if that's why he did one international gaming event and Morgan did the other.

Frankly, my surprise is that his wife isn't a gamer. How do you marry the Sess and wait until Fable 2 to be interested in games. :)

I agree about the chair, though. I do that just using the computer, and most computer chairs aren't as comfy as a couch.

lol....good advice...but so hard to follow when you zone out everything but the game...

"The shrooms of gaming"?...HILARIOUS

Posted by CKNola - Thursday, October 23, 2008 11:02 AM

Have yet to play Fable 2 (I'm still bitter about Fable 1s many unfulfilled promises).
But I did want to comment on the "Dr Sess" moment.

I have to say, every gamer should get a big "Lazy" recliner.
I play my games in mine and it allows me to lean backwards instead of forward, so even if you buy a Fable 2/Fallout3 type game where you play for hours on end, your back stays feeling fine.

Posted by Suhaila - Thursday, October 23, 2008 11:33 AM

@Autobot_Who People don't always marry someone who has all the same passions and interests that they do. Grant it I'd never be able to date someone who didn't at least play every time and again, but that's just me. Wait, I probably did date someone who didn't play games, it just ended before that became a problem. I think.

so enough posting comment about the married thing already.

how about we all move on the the next question, so what's his name?

(just joking, no harm intended, I love you guys. well at least most of the time)

Posted by jjevansjr - Friday, October 24, 2008 11:50 AM

For me it isn't so much the back pain from playing hours on end, but that my eyeballs feel like there in a vise sometimes.

Posted by RP_Puzzle - Tuesday, October 28, 2008 12:58 PM

Yeah I remember playing FF7 for 10 hours to get the gold chocobo and my eyes were twitchy and fuzzy for a while afterwards. I dunno if my posture while gaming has ever been a problem, but then again I usually play a game for 3 hours max unless it's epic like The World Ends With You and DSes are just hard to be comfy with.

I'm glad your wife likes Fable 2 and you guys are playing together :).
