Retailers Out Of Space For Fake Instruments

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 1:10 PM

Although retailers appreciate the amount of business music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band bring in, they present logistical problems when dealing with hundreds of thousands of units.

According to reports, retailers have been lashing out against instrument peripherals for consoles due to the amount of space they take up on their shelves. Less shelf space means less product and less product means less revenue.

One company, XS Games is taking a different approach. They developed a small peripheral that attaches to the Wiimote for their Wii version of their new music game, PopStar Guitar. The PS2 version will ship as software only, but will be compatible with all existing PS2 guitar peripherals. The game is expected to release later this month.

Wal-Mart was reportedly pleased at this approach as it means they can fit more product onto the shelves during the busy shopping season leading up to the Holidays. We think this only further emphasizes the need for full compatibility between instruments.

I love that pic!

This makes perfect sense from a retailer's perspective. To my knowledge, retailers use "cost per square foot" and "revenue per square foot" to determine what and where to stock. If a Wii game takes up 1/2 sqft for $40, and an instrument takes up 2 sqft for $100, the instrument needs to get dropped (unless they're flying off the shelves).

I have to feel for the retailers. I have often marvelled at the huge amounts of shelf space the instruments take up and wondered when the retailers would put their foot down. I especially noticed the shelf-hogging when Rock Band released separate instruments.

I just had a brilliant business idea.
I'm going to open a store called "The Large Plastic Instrument Store."
It will be your one stop shop for all of your fake instrument needs.

ahhhh...screw the retailers! There just lucky I don't order it off of the internet. No sympathy for them. I'm going to go to The Large Plastic Instrument Store and pick up a few gifts...for me and my girl. ;-)

Well some things are compatible with other music games like Rock Band 1's instruments are also compatible with Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour.

I work in the backroom of a "special" retailer. . . I must say that the guitar periphs are out of control! There is absolutely no room for anything else!!! BOO ON THAT!!!

The genre has enough steam (at the moment) to possibly justify "The Large Plastic Instrument Store" concept... even if it only lasts for a couple of years.

Realistically, I agree with the comment about how fast these products are moving (or aren't moving). That rythm games are generating increasing console and game sales is a testament to their value in broadening the gaming audience. Maybe Walmart should stop selling music CDs and use the space to sell guitareoke games.

I've always wondered why PC games came in those huge boxes/packages just to hold a few CD/DVD jewel cases. I know it's about marketing but the boxes were really huge just to hold a 3 disc game...
