EA Faces Copyright Infringement Suit

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 11:04 AM

Third-party megapublisher Electronic Arts was sued for copyright infringement involving the company's NCAA sports games series. The publisher allegedly used an official University of Las Vegas team anthem without composer Gerald Willis's permission. Willis, who works as a high school music teacher, now demands $1.5 million USD from EA.

The plaintiff claims that he heard the anthem he composed for UNLV on 10 EA Sports titles, which includes NCAA Football (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), NCAA Basketball 2009, NCAA March Madness (2006, 2007, 2008) and NCAA Baseball 2006 and 2007. Breaking the demanded amount down, Willis seeks $150,000 for each violation.

Willis's lawyer, Ellen Winograd, said that the anthem was composed solely for the UNLV band. "It was not written for commercial use," Winograd said.

Wow just cause you have done nothing else that would pay you good money you think that while employed by the university wich by the way did licence the use of the music and so did the NCAA that you can sue cause you did not give premision. You lost all rights the second you handed over the music to the university. Back to you high school job and earn your money not sit around looking for a easy dollar.

For someone with Jayhawks in your name, you don't spell like someone that could even get into UNLV.

spelling has nothing to do with it...you would be surprised at what they let in to collage....but does that matter? Atleast they are in there learning.

i doubt ole boy has any rights....he's looking for a loophole to cash in on.

He has a better suit against the University for selling it, than EA for buying it.

Sorry I did correct my spelling oh well. Everyone on the page knew what I was talking about. Who really cares if everything is spelled correct on a comment page on g4's website? Next time I will use spell check or check it for spelling mistakes. There does that make you feel like a better person? Are you the stupid that you assume a jayhawk has anything to do with going to UNLV. Didn’t know that they were the Jayhawks.

Sadly 1.5 mil is nothing to EA but I hope EA goes under.. I hate this company. EA never fixes anything they do, and I am also guessing that the new SW MMO that EA has there name on will also flop. Have you seen the crappy photos? Thats not Star Wars... I played an EA MMO and boy did it suck. EA could care less about anything other then take your money and not fix what you thought you bought..

SCREW YOU EA!
