Harrison: 'LBP' Delay Was The 'Right Decision'

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:05 AM

Former Sony executive Phil Harrison said that the company made 'absolutely the right decision' in delaying the release of LittleBigPlanet due to the controversial Qur'an references. Harrison, who resigned as SCE's Worldwide Studios boss to become the president of Atari, added that the delay won't tamper with the game's success when it launches, according to the reporty by GamesIndustry:

Harrison explains:

"I wasn't privy to all of the discussions and debate that went on within Sony, but I know they would have thought very deeply about it, and at the highest level of the company. And on reflection I think it was absolutely the right thing to do, because LittleBigPlanet set out from day one to be a game for the entire world - and if there was anything that accidentally detracted from that vision and made the game not fun for the entire world, then the game would have fundamentally failed in its mission.

Harrison continued:

So I think Sony took absolutely the right decision - painful though it was, and frustrating though it might be for gamers who were looking forward to it. It only seems to have heightened the anticipation, so I think it'll end up being a win, and full credit to Media Molecule for turning around a fix as quickly as they did."

Recently, a representative from an American Muslim group said that they weren't offended by the LittleBigPlanet controversy, stating that the "core of this issue is not about offending ‘all Muslims,’ but only about freedom of expression and the free market." LittleBigPlanet will be released the week of October 27 in North America for the Playstation 3.

The delay didn't stop my manager...he went to Wal-mart at around 1am on the 21st and picked himself up a copy of the recalled version.

So if this only ramps the anticipation up, would I be right in saying that this was a calculated publicity stunt?

Just a thought.

And my mate here brought up an interesting point: clearly, one of the largest Muslim organizations is not offended by the Qu'ran reference and agrees with us gamers in saying if you don't like it, don't play it. Another reason for this global recall was probably because some right-wing nut job said 'Oh we can have that in there! The terrorists will get us again!'

he's an idiot. i've seen lots of polls and no one cared. just corporate talk to justify stupid mistakes

I think it was the right choice this is America if theres one thing we like to do its find things to complain about and/or to place blame for something stupid on. Now we just get a week of people complaining about the delay instead of a bunch of anti-muslim people going Emo that those words were in there. Plus you know somewhere down the line some guy would go and say, 'The music in LBP made me do it!' and of course people will believe the moron.

Phil left?! when did that happen? And why Atari?

============================ =

I'm starting to really think the same... although I can't see why they took the chance. Following the other story about the American Institute... I'm thinking Sony just saw a possible shot at main-stream media news.

^^^Hmmmm.

Yet no one is offended by " Sack Boy " ?

I just find it funny that this one hasn't been brought up yet.

Posted by TBman - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:15 AM

all they said were some lines from the qur'an. I heard this """"offensive"""" part of the game on the article g4 put up and I thought it was really cool. Maybe they were worried about offending non-muslums, or more likely they were just overthinking the whole thing.

Posted by dj8002 - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:19 AM

Why would anyone be offended by "sack boy"? One would have to have a perverted mind to even make the connection and if that was the case the person probably wouldn't care anyway...

Posted by Blackkro - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:40 AM

It was the right decision!

I saw this game at walmart yesterday! Was thinking about buying it but don't have the internet. I know it doesn't need the internet but I know it will be alot more fun If I did.

Posted by SinnerDelGore - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 11:18 AM

No one thought of "Sackboy" in that way because our roll models are not Brevis and Butthead.

Posted by Drop_Six - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 12:46 PM

Delay, I don't know anything about a delay. I got my copy yesterday at a locally owned video game store. They thought the recall was ridiculous so they sold their copies anyway.

Don't hate just cause you don't get to play it, or any other original game for the 360.
