'The Old Republic' Story Details

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 7:19 AM

The story in BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic RPG was nothing short of awesome, and if you haven't experienced it, then you're completely missing out on some of gaming's most revered moments. With the announcement of the upcoming MMO project from EA and BioWare, Star Wars: The Old Republic, we expect the story elements to be an incredible experience once again in the upcoming "story-driven" MMO.

As mentioned in yesterday's announcement, The Old Republic will have a unique story for each player in the game, whether the player chooses his/her allegiance with the Sith Empire or the Galactic Republic. Lead writer Daniel Erickson gave out some details on the The Old Republic's upcoming tale, ranging from its relevance to the Knights of the Old Republic title to class choices.

Taking place about 300 hundred years after the events of the first KOTOR game, The Old Republic focuses on the high tension between the Republic and Sith Empire. Erickson's interview with Shack News revealed the following details:

On the way story will work in The Old Republic:

"We have classes in the game, and every class has a different story. Every class has a story that will take you from the first level of the game to the last level of the game, and none of those stories are the same.

In the same way, faction stuff is split out between the Empire and Republic. So the takeaway note from this is, if you roll a Jedi character and you play them from the first level to the last level, and then you roll a Sith and you play them from the first, you will not see one repeated quest, line of dialogue, or piece of content. It is a 100% different story experience.

That is not to say you won't see the opposite side of the conflict. It is about war. We don't play common people. We play huge heroes in the Star Wars universe, which means the war is important."

On the strength of class-based story:

"You are a Sith. You have a Darth Vader fantasy. You are now playing, for all intents and purposes, a Sith RPG."

On the idea of choice-based story in an MMO:

"You're 60 hours into the game on the light side, and you hit this huge choice. You know exactly what you want to do, and you look for the save button, and you realize there is no save button. I'm gonna make this choice, and this choice is going to be my choice forever. It makes not only the individualism of we're actually telling this story, but the power of making these choices stronger than they've ever been in any BioWare game."

Hit the source for the rest of the interview. Star Wars: The Old Republic will be available for the PC.

Sounds very interesting so far. Looking forward to the story.

I'm a little concerned about the designs of the characters and such, hope to hear more though. The lightsabers look pretty freakin big, cant ya just throw in the small silver lightsabers like in KOTOR 1 and 2?

There better be alot of character customization as well, like in SW Galaxies. I dont want this game to lack alot of customization like WOW.

This game = fail.

Let the nerdlings discuss...

Posted by tanker58p - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:11 AM

i cant stand mmo's but i might have to give it a try just to play this game ugh.........

Posted by Smartguy81 - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:15 AM

this game will fail. it will get alot of initial sales much like AoC and WAR have and then lose its fanbase back to WoW. I think once players get into this game and realize that it isn't like their tried and true KoToR it will disgust them. I for one am disgusted with moving this franchise to an MMO instead of a stellar single player RPG.

On a side note...WoW might not kill this game...but SC2 might. Blizz is best in the business.

SuperTed, how would this fail? KOTOR has such a strong following, as does Bioware, and the Star Wars Universe in general. Bioware makes quality games, i really can't see this being bad.

This is what I've been waiting for for so very long. I absolutely cannot wait for this game to come out...the only task that remains is building a computer to play it on. Saddest part is I'd probably build one exclusively for this game. I am so excite!

Any ideas on how many years before ANH this is supposed to be?

Posted by Krazyky - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:25 AM

Is it a xbox 369 exclusive or multi Platforms?

Posted by raziel_hell - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 8:27 AM

Smartguy81@ Don,t forget d3) prolly play that for a few years also.

Posted by n00bSector5 - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 9:10 AM

@ TKEmysterio
they said it's about 300 years after the first KOTOR, so it's still about 5K years before ANH

interesting, so can i play freely with each different class as I want? can I have a Bounty hunter class, jedi and sith class all going at the same time? and they try to say it's unique to each player but every single player in the universe will get the same story based on their class choice(which the uses will probably consist of 300 jedi to 1 bounty hunter or whatever else they offer).

think about this for a second, as much as they may promise this I don't see how one character can have any lasting effects on the universe the way revan did, no matter what the desicions you make. end of story

Bioware doing this makes no sense. It's like having child and raising it. Putting in all of your best efforts and seeing him/her grow up to be star athlete or sucessfull doctor. The child get many accolades and many friends and then a few years later you lose interest in the child. Put him up for adoption (Raven) and see the child begin to smoke crack and get a STD. Then for absolute no apparent reason you re-adopt the child only to shoot it in the spine and make it a parapalegic with no semblance of its former self.

Okay rant over...

i know unless Revan was somehow preserved he wont show up ( which stinks) Darth Revan was what made KOTOR this is going to be like the empire strikes back with out Darth Vader

I don't think we should judge this game just yet...I mean, it just got announced so I think we should sit back, and watch what happens. The only part that bugs me is that its set 300 years later.

Posted by Darkis - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 7:34 PM

wow....can you guys make up anymore stuff in your heads about a game you know nothing about?

just have faith...why dont you just compare story wise what the said to any mmo out there...youd realize thats what every mmo lacks..and what bioware is trying not to do...i have faith in them..

btw dont like it dont play it...not like any of you are making games.

I hate the idea...

Posted by Yatzee1000 - Wednesday, October 22, 2008 10:03 PM

I liked the original Kotor but this isn't Kotor this is a cheap attempt to make some money of the Kotor license... the douches

Posted by donwilli - Thursday, October 23, 2008 3:33 PM

That's bootleg if they don't make something for xbox. I loved kotor and it would be a shame if they alienate the xbox fans in this manner.

Ugh. I know they probably have fresh new ideas, but alot of this being iconic and a big deal bs sounds exactly like the pitch LA and SOE were trying to give for the New Game Enhancements. They are making this game sound kind of linear, as if, even though a Jedi won't do the same things or hear the same things a Sith may hear, each Jedi will be doing things all too similarly.

Like the tutorial SWG had where Han Solo helps you escape. Sounds cool, but it is really a load of crap from a role playing stand point.

There is potential here, but I have already learned not to get my hopes up when Star Wars and MMORPG is used in the same sentence.

does anybody know when the betas out cause ill be on that like a hobo on a sandwhich lol =)

Posted by jsus - Monday, November 10, 2008 3:07 PM

anf for all these people saying this game will fail probably said the same thing about new hulk with edward norton so there failures just keep the faith and it's still gonna be epic!!!
