In a recent interview, Spiderman director Sam Raimi made some provocative comments concerning the future of the franchise.
Firstly, Raimi believes that he could make the next two films back-to-back (Back to the Future style.) Says Raimi:
“It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be,” he marveled, hinting that “4” and “5” would be very closely linked in storyline. "If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn’t been written yet.”
Secondly, Raimi has assured fans who have been dying to see Dr. Curt Conners finally transform into the iconic villain The Lizard, that he wants it to happen as well. Of the actor who has portrayed Dr. Conners in the last two films, Dylan Baker, Raimi comments:
“He’s a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard’s story will be told,” he teased, referring to Baker’s Curt Connors character. “I don’t know if it will be this one or not. I just don’t know. I’m definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don’t know who the villain is yet.”
And lastly, Raimi hints that he plans to have the script written by some time around March of 2010.
"I’m guessing. It sounds like a long time away, but we need a script first, and a lot of pre-production has to take place."
With the recent positive news for the franchise that Tobey Maguire and Raimi himself were set to return for another installment, there were nevertheless, some creative difficulties left in place after the close of the third film, namely the killing of key characters in the Spiderman lore. The film also seemed to end in such a way that it was meant to be a close to what seemed to be a trilogy. These obstacles, added by the uncertainty of the return of Kirsten Dunst, make it clear that Raimi has his work cut out for him.
