Hero to some, goofy gamesman to others, and eccentric millionaire to the rest, Richard Garriott is in space right at this very moment. The so-called Lord British is the next in a string of space tourists along for the ride on a Russian mission to the International Space Station.
Once there, he'll participate in experiments in zero-gravity among other things. His journey to space is noteworthy not just because he is a space tourist but because he becomes the first descendant of a person who went to space to also go to space--Garriott's father was an astronaut for NASA, and went up in 1973 and 1983. He was there for the launch along with Garriott's mother, siblings, and girlfriend.
Richard Garriott is the game developer who most notably brought us the Ultima series, but also Tabula Rasa, City of Heroes, and City of Villains. He will return to earth after 10 days in orbit and the flight wlll have cost him $30 million.
And here's the Kazakhstani launch video complete with a cryptic sign held up by British:
