As soon as it was announced yesterday, everyone was hungry for more details about Bungie's upcoming FPS follow-up, Halo 3 Recon. And being the good people that they are, Bungie gave out more details during Tokyo Game Show 2008.
Speaking to a small group of media, Bungie.net community lead Brian Jarrard and Luke Smith said that Recon is the company's answer back to fans. "Our fans want more Halo 3 content and they want to do more in the Halo universe, and this is really our way to continue to support the Halo 3 fan base and given them something a little bit different than what they were expecting," said Jarrard.
And giving the unexpected is what they did--Recon will be featuring a UNSC soldier as the main protagonist, instead of the series's familiar super soldier. "Master Chief will not be featured in this game in any way," said Jarrard. The events of Recon takes place before Halo 3's storyline unfolds. "You're back on Earth in the Covenant-occupied city of New Mombasa," said Jarrard.
In terms of gameplay, Recon will be definitely a game on its own. As mentioned, the game will be distributed as a full DVD retail release, and it will not require Halo 3 to play. And just like its predecessor, Recon will have a full campaign mode, complete with up to four-player online co-op and brand new multiplayer contents.
And according to Bungie, since Master Chief's extraordinary abilities won't be available to players, Recon will introduce a different approach to combat. Bungie confirms that it won't be squad-based, stealth or a third-person shooter, so it's quite intriguing what the team has planned for this expansion.
Halo 3 Recon will be availabe in Fall 2009 for the Xbox 360.
