When engineering and mechanical geeks get together to race cars, everyone is a winner. Case-in-point, the Escape from Berkeley race, where a bunch of garage inventors drive from San Francisco to Las Vegas. The catch: No petroleum allowed, and fuel must be scavenged along the way.
Ten teams have entered the race, and strategies range from a wood-burning pick-up truck to a three-wheeled, steam-powered car that is the epitome of steampunk, to a vegetable oil burning Lotus. The car pictured above runs on wood, cardboard, unprocessed veggie oil and even olive pits and walnut shells.
