We all know the big money is in live theatre which is why it's no surprise that Director Julie Taymor, of Broadway Lion King fame, is putting the budget for her new Spider-Man Broadway show at $40 million.
Broadway insiders, which we are surprisingly not at G4, are saying the show would also have a running cost of $1 million a week, which means it would have to run for a thousand years just to break even.
This may be in jest, but it certainly does seem like even with the ungodly ticket prices that accompany most Broadway shows, it would still be difficult to turn a profit or even stay afloat.
The show, by the way, is a musical with a rock score from Bono, and co-production credits for Sony and Marvel. The budget has become inflated due to Taymor's insistence of the use of multiple specialized designers, such as projection, aerial, fight, costume, graphic, and film.
One thing is for sure, if you can get past a singing Peter Parker, this show will at least look awesome. No info on cast yet but we're betting Matthew Broderick is in the mix somewhere.
