Wii Currency Not Valid On DSi Store

Posted by John Manalang - Tuesday, October 07, 2008 3:25 PM

When Nintendo introduced the online DSi store, we immediately assumed that our current Wii points could be used to purchase downloads. Turns out that won't be happening; Siliconera reports that Wii points and DSi points are considered to be two different forms of currency, therefore Wii points can only be used to purchase Virtual Console and WiiWare titles.

To add yet another point method into the fray, Japanese game retailers will be selling Nintendo point cards that can be converted to either Wii points or DSi points. But again, for example, once you decide to convert it to Wii points, you can't convert it again for DSi points.

It's an odd method chosen by Nintendo, as it may create some confusions later on, but either way, at least it's now clarified.

This... is really effing lame. But it's not like Nintendo knows how to make things easier for it's users.

I am on the fence about the DSi because its...just kinda strange I mean. I like the idea but I don't like the way everything is handled because I don't want companies to start supporting just the DSi and vice versa.

Considering that Wii points are associated with a system and not an account like, say, XBox Live Arcade, I don't find this news surprising in ANY fashion...

I boo! Nintendo on this one.

wow. this sucks. i was on the fence about purchasing a ds once the new one came out but now i definitely won't. they force you to pay for package deals on points rather than just using your credit card so that everyone who owns either a DS or wii will sit around having 100-300 points they'll never be able to spend on anything. Sure, it's only a buck or two individually, but that means millions of dollars of additonal profits for Nintendo. that's just chickenshizz. MS does the same think, I understand, and I don't know why I or anyone else should put up with it.

This is just a stupid idea, though I understand why it was done, from a money-grubbing viewpoint. Dunno if I'll get a DSi, maybe see after a few months of it being out. What would've been great was a graphical improvement along with everything else, but I know THAT's not gonna happen.
