Hands-On 'Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop'

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, October 06, 2008 10:17 AM

The Wii version of Capcom's Dead Rising, (subtitled Chop Til You Drop) starts out with a unique problem: It's a port of a game that strained the Xbox 360's capacities, so it's hard to imagine how an exact copy could possibly work on the Wii. The 360 Dead Rising was like an epic zombie flick (Think Dawn of the Dead), where the Wii's technical limitations may make Chop Til You Drop more like a low-budget, indie zombie flick (Think Dead Alive.) Like any self-respecting low-budget flick, Chop Til You Drop makes up for its constraints with some ingenuity and twists on the original formula. Whether it will pan out when the game is released later this year remains to be seen.

First off: The number of zombies. Massive zombie mobs was the point of the original game, with hundreds of shambling ghouls onscreen at any given time. As you'd probably expect, there are less of them in the Wii version of the game. I counted between 10-15 undeads onscreen in the level open for play. It's not enough to give you that "OMG! They're everywhere!" feeling, but still enough to be interesting. Capcom reportedly plans to squeeze more in, though, by the time this comes out.

Players of the first game will recognize the setting of the demo level right away. It's the main area of the mall from the 360 version. The graphics are impressive for a Wii game, but not as spiffy as the 360 version. Again, pretty much as you'd expect. Parts of the mall are closed off to the player, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. A tighter arena makes it seem like there are more undead around anyway.

To add to the game's variety, Capcom has thrown in some new enemies. We saw zombie poodles (they leap at you and are much more aggressive than "regular" zombies), zombie parrots (They fly around and dive-bomb ya) and a zombie mall security guard, complete with crackling tasers. Hey, don't tase me, zomb!

The mode we played was a timed level where the object is to slay as many zombies as possible in 2 minutes. We picked up a bench, waggled the Wii-mote and smashed some brain eaters. There are less objects with which to smash monsters, giving the game a sparse feeling. As is the case in many ports, the use of the wiimote seems like an afterthought. It's possible to attack by waggling your Wii around, but we quickly changed to the "A" button--it's just easier.

After a call from the detestable Otis (yes, the most annoying dialer ever is back) we were transported to  a boss battle against Adam the evil clown. Adam was hanging out on the mall's roof, but other than a change in scenery, he played pretty much like the first game: Dual toy chainsaws, blowgun, balloons, dodges and all. We were pretty handily dispatched by the clown, but it remains an incredibly awesome enemy to fight. When the game is released, there will be a rematch.

We'll have to wait to see how the game will play out as a finished product, but taken on its own terms, Chop Til You Drop seems like a fun little game--it only suffers in comparison to the 360 version.

Check it out for yourself in the trailer below.

Enjoy Wii owners but don't ever play the 360 version because then you'll see what your Wii version is lacking. Other than that, you'll be just fine! :)

Well, if Capcom can make it work, why not?

I recently pulled out Dead Rsing and relized that it has some horrible controls. It's a fun game but I think I ignored some of the problems since it was my first 360 game.

I skipped this game because I heard there was no save function. True or False? If false this game is Epic Fail!

**If true this game is EPIC FAIL!

I think Dead Rising will do reasonably well on the Wii.

Yes you can save!! lol

I still play this game, but I'm a zombie movie guy. I will probably rent it for the Wii. It might be cool to use the Wii mote to take out zombies.

You can save but the save function is severely broken and the text is so small, you need a 50" LCD to read it. Other than that, this game was a good buy.

My main two problems with Dead Rising are the controls and not being able to save whenever you want. How come I can walk around when aiming with my camera, but not when aiming a weapon. That was a pain in the ass. And why can you only save the game at the restrooms and security room. If capcom fixed those two issues, then this game would be so much better than what it is.

you can't save everywhere because it's a true survival horror game. can you save everywhere in resident evil? no.

think people, THINK!

Yeah but there are times when you save in a specific spot and still have to backtrack and do certain activities over again. And you couldn't save in the same spot twice for some reason, at least I couldn't. I loved the game though but my biggest constraints were the save function and the iddy biddy text.

I guess Dead Rising is a survival horror game in a way, but it plays more like a sandbox game with some RPG elements in my opinion.

i agree w/ all points here. it's a game that takes a certain level of patience. some of the boss fights were ridiculous combined w/ the awful aiming system. my biggest gripe is the fact that once you save you can never go back. and every event occurs at a specific time so if you're stuck fighting your way through the mall at the opposite end, you're screwed.

Oh, my God... people are being opened-minded about this game, which is so COOL! I half expected someone to be like, "Haha this games gonna blow play the 360 version its better you noobs!" Yes, I know there's no punctuation marks.

Posted by NuBeatz - Monday, October 6, 2008 1:23 PM

That's what it was then...they did the save system like that because the entire game is timed and specific points in the game depend on what day/time it is and if you fiddle around with one save spot you will gimp yourself and the game won't progress as necessary but I still don't like the save system. I don't wanna have to hurry through the game due to time constraints.

This game was the main reason I got a 360 (I originally wanted a PS3...way to let me down Sony).

I never had a problem with the save system. I liked it.

The survivors were as retarded as RROD though.

I sense much Pessimism. MUCH pessimism

No Joke, I've play through Dead Rising at least 12 times now. Sadly, you almost have to to do and get everything you need as far as acheivments and missions go. Once you get used to the time constraints you realize they aren't very constraining- (if that makes any sense at all?) You just have to know when to do things and when not to do things and when to take those damn calls from Otis so you don't screw yourself out of an Objective- its a pain but, It makes it challanging and thats why I liked it!

A 360 game I was going to get today for Wii, tommorow. Whatever. Gamestop tried to buy me into this game for 360, f$k them. When I said I didn't want RROD, and looked into dude's face, I knew he was full of s%t. He finched. Whatever.

Posted by blakseed - Tuesday, October 7, 2008 12:10 AM

Swear to god. I don't say that often.

Posted by pakodoom - Tuesday, October 7, 2008 9:49 AM

those Gamestop guys are a bunch of Chode smokers blakseed. they hoard games and systems so us civilians can't buy them. putting out preorders and not calling people to tell them their reserved game has arrived. also don't ask them for the list of games to be released.. half the time they give me a sheet for the wrong system.. because PS3 is easy to missread as WII right?
