'The Conduit' Hands-On

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, October 06, 2008 8:37 AM

Whether it’s deserved or not, the Nintendo Wii has been tagged as the video game system for soccer moms and soccer kids as opposed to the hardcore community. The Conduit, developed by High Voltage Software (America's Army: True Soldiers for the Xbox 360, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PSP) might just change that perception.

The Conduit is a first-person shooter, a genre underserved on the Wii. Although it’s in a pre-alpha state, the version of the game we got our hands-on at the Nintendo Media Summit this past week was slick. The plot involves an alien takeover of Washington DC where the players fight evil monsters while running through a variety of levels and occasionally solving puzzles.

The level on display involved a trip through an underground bunker, where deeper mysteries are hinted at. The mission involved getting to a cache of neuro-toxins, which we can only assume caused the mutations of the guards. Seems like a standard FPS plotline—although, again, we only played one level of a game that isn’t finished yet, so we can’t say for sure.

Who cares about plot when they’re mutants/aliens to kill, though, right? And that’s where the strength of The Conduit shows. It’s a rock-solid shooter. Players move through the game world seamlessly and quickly, while running and gunning numerous enemies, pointing the Wiimote and dispatching them with headshots and (in our case) leg shots.

The enemy AI seems adequate. They take cover when you’d expect, and provide a reasonable challenge. Though this is just a quick impression as opposed to a detailed discussion—we just didn’t see enough of the many enemies planned for the game to get a feel for whether they’ll all “feel” different to kill, or be clones of each other with different sized hit boxes and health meters.

Shooting accuracy is assured with an easily customizable control system. You can calibrate every aspect of your aim easily, from the Wiimote’s sensitivity to turning speed and your “dead zone”, meaning that the joy of pointing and shooting your TV with your Wiimote doesn’t fall prey to the finicky controls of some other Wii-based shooters.

The Conduit looks fantastic. It features the kind of lighting effects, water effects, explosions and detailed animations that we haven’t seen in any previous Wii titles. The thing is covered in realistic shadows and objects get more detailed as your get closer to them, again, unlike some Wii shooters we’ve played. The level of graphical detail and sophistication makes it seem like you’re playing a 360 launch title as opposed to a Wii game. It’s pretty amazing. High Voltage are pushing the limits of the Wii so much, we half expected to see smoke rising from the console. It’s a pretty huge leap from, say, Red Steel.

The game also features The Eye of God, a magical orb the player holds in his hands and gazes through to discover hidden items and puzzles. Much could be made of this feature, although the puzzle in the level we played wasn’t particularly compelling. Remains to be seen how it will play in the larger game.

Overall, The Conduit probably isn’t going to change the face of video gaming with its innovation and inventiveness, but it seems like a rock-solid shooter that offers all the joys that fans of the genre have come to love. Add in the Wii control scheme and a finely tuned attention to detail, and The Conduit may well be the game the ‘Core have been waiting for.

THIS IS OLD NEWS! This game was at E3 and G4 did nothing. This game was at GC and G4 did nothing. This game was at PAX and G4 did nothing. See a trend here? All in all though I can't wait for this game. I've been following it since it's announcement in April. I think it was April.

Epic Fail.

Manhunt 2 should've changed the "kid's toy" perception of the Wii but since some people still have that perception about the Wii then The Conduit should be the game that changes their view.

It's a third party title that ISN'T a collection of mini-games! Rejoice!

Posted by Tmidiman - Monday, October 6, 2008 9:55 AM

A bit off topic, but I saw the cover of the latest Nintendo Power. righ on the top they use the word,...HARDCORE. wow, I thought Nintendo stopped using the world to make up for their lack of hardcore games, but maybe they've woken up, even if it's too late for 2008

I don't care for an fps on wii. The controls just don't feel right. I do not like holding my arms in a stiff position for that long. Maybe with WiiMotionPlus it might be more enjoyable...until then...meh.

Well DUH, G4 isn't a gaming network. If they were, they would have covered this long ago instead of now when it is more appropriate for them. G4 is like a needy girlfriend.

Also sjohnson, what the hell? Are you even a gamer? You're not even an objective writer. "first-person shooter, a genre underserved on the Wii." That is such an ignorant statement that only a complete idiot would make. Wii may not have a lot of FPS but the ones it does have, like MP3, have incredible gameplay.

@ Oinkness

Do you even understand what the hell "underserved" means? You said yourself "may not have a lot of them"...THAT'S WHAT UNDERSERVED MEANS!!! Underserved doesn't mean the games sucks, it MEANS "NOT A LOT OF THEM".

That being said I highly doubt this game will be enough to stop me selling my Wii for being a worthless kiddy console.

Posted by IBloodstormI - Monday, October 6, 2008 11:31 AM

2 "hardcore" games are hardly enough to change my perspective of the Wii and a kids console. its will take a lot more to tip the scale then that.

but its doesnt have to tip that scale because it is making them millions as the soccer mom / kiddie console.

looking forword to it

As to controls, while it will obviosuly use Wiimote & nunchuck (and by the way, MTV.com's Multiplayer gaming page confirmed via HV COO Eric Nosfinger that Conduit will also use Wiimotion Plus- as an optional add-on, but not required for gameplay) it has been bandied about for some time that the game will also feature Classic & GameCube control options & ALL control functions can be altered on the fly.

The above mentioned MTV Multiplayer article also mentiond Nosfinger officially confirming WiiSpeak compatibility for voice chat in Conduit's 16-player online as well.

Again, an option if desired (like MotionPlus).

With all the attention getting paid to such stuff & to "getting it right", it sounds like HV has a serious winner on their hands. Now, just release the damn thing already!!!

"Well DUH, G4 isn't a gaming network."

yep, all they do is burn Cops, Ninja Warrior, Cheaters, and some other crap.

anyway, can't wait for this game. looks good in all directions

@ IBloodstormI

so, because the Wii doesn't have FPS', u call it a "kiddie console"? your logic is astounding

Posted by chai - Monday, October 6, 2008 6:10 PM

the first pic looks like the gravity gun from Half-Life. BOOSH!

@2FAST4UALL

Its not the lack of FPS's that make the wii a kiddie console it is the rediculous amount of kiddie games that make the wii a kiddie console. I have a wii and it has not been turned on in months. After playing my PS3 and 360 it just doesn't add up.

idk evrything looks pretty good xcept da characters hand and his gun, they look kinda weak but evrything els looks decent

Posted by dbzwiifan18 - Monday, October 6, 2008 8:09 PM

@IbloodstromI
What exactly would it take? A GTA game?A DOA/Rumble roses type game with BOOBS? More RPGs? More FPS games? Better online? More"HARDCORE"(someone come up with a full standard definition of one) games?? Less party crap? Any game you buy is of your choosing.I don't understand how shovelware was okay on PS2 but a PROBLEM on the Wii. Did all the seasoned gamers magically grow dumb this generation and are unable to pick a quality title? This Conduit game looks very promising.

I'm getting this. I don't care what anyone says. This is in my buy list.

I'm just wondering about the name choice for this game. "The Conduit" invokes less "alien shoot-em-up" thoughts and more "let's wire a house!" EXTREME!!!! Maybe I'll wait for the sequel: "The Light Switches".

Posted by pakodoom - Tuesday, October 7, 2008 9:51 AM

all i have to say about this game is, if that first picture is of a lightning gun being affected by gravity.. i'm gonna kill some retard programmers.

i swear that better be some sort of ice making water gun.

Actually undeserved in this context means the poster didn't think this game was worthy of being on the Wii. That's what undeserved means.

When will X-Play cover this game (other than the 10/30/08 Gaming Update). They should really talk about this game and acknowledge its existence in order to please Nintendo fans (Like me, the Wii is the only system I have and I get my hardcore games like Metroid Prime 3. I love that game). This game is awesome, and I will buy it at launch.

When in teh world will Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb talk about any hardcore Wii games that actually exist. They always respond in the Virtual Audience that there is nothing. Call of Duty 5 is on the Wii but they did nothing. They don't talk about the games that will prevent Wii owners from commiting suicide!!!! They need to make a apologize to the Wii owners (Doodle) and mention all 30 hardcore titles. Adam Sessler! are you listening. The G4 users that don't have the Internet will kill themselves if you don't mention these games. That is cheap, what they are doing.
