Beattie Explains Plot In 'Halo' Spec Script

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, October 03, 2008 12:00 PM

Stuart Beattie, more recently known as the man who penned Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, loves Halo so much that in his free time he wrote a script adapted from the novel Halo: The Fall of Reach. This much we knew already. Recently, Beattie mentioned that he is in talks with Microsoft about getting his movie made, and went to further detail the plot of his script. Short version; it's about a boy named "John". Long version; hit the Read More link.

It sets up a world 500 years in the future and we have colonies, there's the UNSC, there's the secret Spartan training program. And you see this six-year-old kid kidnapped in the middle of the night... The character doesn't start off as Master Chief. He starts off as John, who's the kid that's kidnapped and told he's going to be a soldier. Anyone can connect with a kid kidnapped from his own home. You're along for that journey. The Covenant comes along halfway through that movie. That gives you half the movie to really get to know everyone and care about everyone. And then when the Covenant come along, it's the first time John sees a grunt or a jackal or an elite. The audience is trying to figure out everything at the same time as the characters are. What are these aliens? Why are they killing us? What did we do? And realizing it's all about this Halo ring. And then ending the movie where the first game begins.

So it's a prequel, eh Beattie? We've been burned by those before, but considering the epic drama of the Space Marines, the Covenant, the Flood, and the Halo rings has never been on the silver screen before, it might be a good place to start the story. It sounds like a great concept, but so much was lost when the Halo movie was scrapped by the studios who refused to raise the budget to meet the artistic vision of Peter Jackson, his writing/producing/life partner Fran Walsh, and visionary director Neil Blomkamp. Can this new script kick the dust off and get production rolling again? We will just have to wait and see.

If this Halo movie gets made it will be the biggest box office flop in history. How many ways can M$ pimp out Halo? Halo is the new Mario. Halo 3 sucked balls so I know a movie will too.

This movie might be good, its not being made by Uwe Boll so it has a chance. I haven't read the books so I don't know the storyline, but it could be good

You've just been sitting here waiting all day for some MS bashing, haven't you RROD?

Isn't this the same guy that's writing the script for Gears of War movie? Stuart Beattie sounds familiar...

The books weren't that bad really. The story as told in the novels is pretty cool. I have my doubts about this though. If a movie studio wasn't willing to pump gobs of money into this project with Peter Jackson involved then it is destined for low budget fail.

Hey, I got another Xbot to change his name to be like mine. LOL. I own you all. I ran off the #1 Xbot in GhostMLD and I can run off any of you.

As someone who's read all the books and played all the games (and was disappointed by the 3 game) I'd have to say the "fall of reach" was my favorite novel. It was well written and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next and was definitely the type of book that could be made into a movie. Basically as long as it gets a good director its going to be pretty difficult to screw it up.

I think its a gimmick account based on your gimmick acct RROD. At least you stopped posting every minute

No offence bt maybe its a good thing the movie isnt being made. I don't want the movie to be a prequel. It would be much better as a side story following UNSC/ODST troopers like in those teaser trailers released a while back.

Posted by vaheegn - Friday, October 3, 2008 12:54 PM

If Halo movie trailer gets released, it will get as much attention as Watchmen is getting right now, maybe even more. Why bash the world of Halo? Some people hate the gameplay, but there's no denying the awesomeness of it's story.

Halo has become StarTrek for a new generation of geeks. Personaly, I think its a good story, an ok game, but I dont think I will be spending money to see a movie.

Posted by ZetaCrossfire - Friday, October 3, 2008 1:08 PM

this would be awesome. a Halo movie would pass titanic in money :D

Posted by jargy1 - Friday, October 3, 2008 1:09 PM

"Anyone can connect with a kid kidnapped from his own home."

Actually I've never been kidnapped or knew anyone who was, so I can't really connect to that.

Also, this sounds like a terrible idea. Halo would be tough to convert into a movie anyway, but having it about a kid just screams "We're going for a PG or PG-13 so we get more money" rather than trying anything remotely interesting.

in my opinion if they are going to make a halo movie they should talk to the guy who writes the story to halo and make it fit right not make up ur own prequel and just stab halo in the gut with a dull knife. a video game movie should fit the the game perfect and hopefully beattie runs this with bungie to see if his script is dead on before making it a movie

This idea is worse than the Halo MMO idea.

If they made this movie it would be straight to DVD.

Posted by collinE - Friday, October 3, 2008 1:43 PM

apparently eric nylund had to follow a certain flow of events in writing the fall of reach and talked with bungie throughout the writing of it, so that nothing would contradict the actual story universe that has already been told. The same would happen with a movie as no one in charge of halo would want it to be "retold" like batman, superman, street fighter, or mario brothers. Any intelligent person knows that it's be a trainwreck if that were allowed to happen

Posted by RedRingOfDaeth - Friday, October 3, 2008 1:44 PM

If they made this movie it would be straight to the Top!!!

Halo has one of the best stories not only in gaming but in fiction. Only epics like the god father and the dark knight have reached better writing and only films like star wars and Lord of the Rings have created such a rich universe that can reach people from all blocks of life, besides maybe the pacifist. If halo cant be turned in to a good movie no game can. Please remain calm if you disagree as I's sure RedRingOfDeath will.

Don't show me master chief young or old with out his helmet. I DON'T NEED TO SEE THAT TO CARE. Leave him some mystery.

A halo movie (especially based off the fall of Reach novel) would be great. Script sounds solid.

If this movie is going to be good, and I stress if, then it can't be another pulp action affair. Thoug many do not want a prequel, honestly, it is probably the only way a good movie could get off. Halo 1 as much as it was a great game, would be a terrible movie. Think about it this way, in a game, we are playing the character so there is already a buy in of sorts, not the same with a movie. I am encouraged by the directors idea because he wants to get the audience emotionally involved. Now, if he can get WETA workshop to work on the special affects and the props, then it stands a real good chance of being good.

"Why do people hate Halo? No good reason except for the fact that it has become really popular, and that its not a PC game. Gaming, like musics, is full of those insufferable purists and originalists."

RROD, I have you know that the Fall of Reach is a New York Times bestseller. Stuart has proven to an intelligent script writer. Every time you speak you come off as a desperate pathetic Sony fanboy. In fact I don't believe you actually play games because it seems you are always too busy insulting any game that's not on the PS3. I suggest you seek help because you have obvisously got some psychological issues.

The Fall of Reach is a well written novel and would make a great movie.

now now no pointing fingers I think the gaystation is a waist of money but it does have resistance and like two other good games Lol

Anyone that has read The Fall Of Reach would say that this book deserves to become a movie. It's not a gimmick starting Master Chief as a kid, he was only like 15 when he was on his first mission and like 16 or 17 when he got his Mark V armor and Cortana. But the main thing that no one's mentioning, is that there are like 30 kids in the same place as him ALL becoming Spartans. So by the end of the movie, guaranteed at least 15-20 Spartans, and THAT is cool.

Just because he starts off as a kid, I wouldn't expect a kid-friendly plotline. There's like 30 of them learning how to kill quickly, efficiently, and under adverse conditions. Lots of potential in this plot, but I admit it can be completely screwed up as well.

I hope they pick a good director.

Posted by SEPHIROTH111111 - Sunday, October 5, 2008 1:37 PM

RROD: Kill yourself.

And other tools: Get over the fact that halo is run of the mill, and a movie is a terrible idea, particularly if Peter Jackson is still being considered to direct. And screw Master Chief, let's see some of the other spartan.

Posted by SEPHIROTH111111 - Sunday, October 5, 2008 1:38 PM

Oh, and this movie has already been done in the novels, it's not a new idea.

Posted by sparky - Sunday, October 5, 2008 6:41 PM

...I think it would be kinda cool if it was made .... I love Halo ^^ ( I'm a Halo Freak)
