Sony PSP: Open To MMO World

Posted by John Manalang - Monday, September 29, 2008 8:59 AM

Have you ever considered an MMO title hitting a portable gaming platform? It's certainly addicting enough to just have it available via a home console, but Sony Online's considering the idea on the Playstation Portable. Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley said to MTV:

“And as we’ve kind of got our heads up looking around the world within Sony Computer Entertainment, we’re really starting to see a big push for PSP. We think it’s a world-class device… In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP.”

Smedley added that possible MMO applications to the PSP could be linked to their upcoming subscription-free MMO title, Free Realms, where they could utilize the portable console for a "pet-training system" that links to the game. "Another way to do it might be to give them mini-games that they can do [on the PSP] when sitting at a bus stop,” said Smedley.

With the PSP's ailing third party support, an MMO application could be an interesting attempt in boosting the system's credibility with third-party developers. What do you think?

That idea could work with the DS because of the possible interfaces via touch screen. Honestly having a keyboard to communicate is much more preferable than using a headset. Except in certain situations of course.

This would definately work, I would rather play an MMO on the go than at home.

Hrm, an MMO on the psp. That would be pretty sweet if they could pull it off. However I would have to disagree with Smartguy81, Depending on the sittuation a keyboard could be better but from playing WOW and such, vent and the now the ingame voice is the way to go.

The idea would work fine with the psp; I could see a thumb keyboard being added via the USB port, though I imagine the difficulty of using one might stand in the way of the social aspect of MMO gaming. The system battery life would probably be the downside; all MMO experiences I am familiar with tend to require long stretches of time on task. The minigame/trainer is more likely to be seen; it would be handy to have an auction house app for most MMOs out there that you can use without booting up your PC.

@atari05
I tended to only like Vent in the events such as a raid or arena pvp. Otherwise I don't want to hear some guy who never stops talking, or the person who breathes into the mic....or the dreaded high pitch voice person!

if solid wifi was more wide spread this would be a great idea...

I'm just excited to see Phantasy Star Portable was the top selling title in Japan last month! I can't wait for it to hit in the US. As long as it has online play as good as PSO did on the Dreamcast in '00 (over dial-up, no less), I'm all set on the PSP MMO front...

funny, i dont see RROD here...

Posted by jonsie87 - Monday, September 29, 2008 2:11 PM

you would think after all the flaming he does on the Microsoft boards, he would try to support some Sony stuff, but i guess not...

jonsie87, thats a good thing that RROD isnt here. I'm sick of the flamewars here so its nice not to see anyone like that here.

I heard about Maple Story being available to the Nintendo DS so a PSP MMO could definatly work. I think an MMORPG would be better as a download though instead of being on a UMD, but other MMO games could work out.

I'm open for new PSP ideas.

Wasn't the PSP game Untold Legends a MMORPG. It was made by SOE, so how is this something for the future.
