Large Hadron Collider Named "Halo"

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, September 18, 2008 9:54 AM

You know that Large Hadron Collider that will answer some fundamental questions about the nature of our existence (or destroy us all) when it fires particles together in October? The Royal Society of Chemistry in London held a contest to change its name recently, apparently after too many accidental misspellings of "Hadron".

They asked ordinary citizens to suggest names, and the most popular, by far, was...are you ready..."HALO".

According to the Royal Society:  "Halo conjures visions of radiant beauty, power and wisdom. The circle of light reflects the collider's form; it is a crowning achievement of science and engineering. It also gives more than a nod to the experiment's importance to religious debate."

And Master Chief.

Hit the jump for some of the more than 2,500 rejected names.

  • Ovid's Phaeton
  • The Magic Roundabout
  • The Genesis Engine
  • E42 - E for Energy, 42, from The Hitchhikers Guide
  • Adam Smasher
  • Hawkinator after Stephen Hawking
  • Puff The Magic Hadron
  • Bosonator
  • BOB - Biggest Of Bangs
  • Mr Twirly Beams
  • The One Ring
  • Stargate

Posted by kstooge - Thursday, September 18, 2008 10:22 AM

I think this is because we will eventually blow up just like Halo.

If this thing really endangered people's lives then scientists wouldn't do the project.

@Tman

Then I guess Hiroshima never happened.

Posted by anonomousperson - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:27 AM

If it is named Halo, then where are we storing the Flood?

Posted by Straticus - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:32 AM

Surprised "Oblivion Gate" wasnt an option, hahaha. LONG LIVE THE DRAGON FIRE!!

Posted by MaxDragon7 - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:50 AM

Lol he only got 800 bucks for it.

Posted by KJ7409 - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:52 AM

sweet, but it should've been called "silver ring of death"

Posted by MaxDragon7 - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:52 AM

By "He", I mean the guy who suggested HALO as the name.

Posted by YForZydis - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:54 AM

2500 rejected names... that means over 2500 people did NOT suggest the most obvious (and awesome) name for that machine.

1 (one) guy on that site suggested halo, its hardly a choice of the masses

Posted by squarewannabe - Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:58 AM

or Linda.

Posted by MutantEnemyMTL - Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:52 PM

I'm glad they won't actually be renaming it since the The Royal Society of Chemistry has nothing to do with the Hardon (he he) Collider. The chemists are just unhappy the physicists have a bigger tool to play with.

@squarewannabe "The winner was chosen at random from the hundreds of people who suggested it"

Posted by MutantEnemyMTL - Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:56 PM

@Utmost_NutsZo

That's right Hiroshima never happened if you mean that an experiment accidentally caused a nuclear explosion.

There's a big difference between dropping a bomb on a city and scientists performing a controlled experiment.

Ignorance prevails I see.
There are like 10 definitions for the word HALO.
Halo is also the name of a gay bar, XD

They should have called it:
"COLLIDER, THE DEATH DEALER"

1) The flood are on the moon. why do you think we arn't going up there?

2) Microsoft's gonna have to choke a bitch.

This thing could just as easily destroy all life on this planet, so it's a pretty appropriate name. Wasn't it the Mayans who thought the world would end on 12/21/2012? lets see what this thing does in four years.

Posted by newhumanbreed - Thursday, September 18, 2008 4:18 PM

Atleast they didn't name it Sack Boy.

Posted by Crankr - Thursday, September 18, 2008 4:42 PM

This has nothing to do with the fact that this will eveltually kill us all.

Posted by burntice - Thursday, September 18, 2008 4:47 PM

It's fitting, but I don't think they actually know what a Halo ring does O_O'

Posted by B1ack_Blob - Thursday, September 18, 2008 5:07 PM
