Rockstar Games's Sam and Dan Houser have been the significant driving forces behind Take-Two Interactive's Grand Theft Auto franchise. However, since their contract with the publisher expires this February 2009, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter suggests that the brothers might pursue other ventures with a different company.
Pachter states the following on his analyst report:
"In trying to calculate the sustainable earnings, we must address the risk of losing key talent. Following a protracted negotiation, Take-Two signed Sam and Dan Houser to a three-year contract in February 2006. The brothers are the driving force behind the Grand Theft Auto series, and are intimately involved in game decisions"
He adds that there would be a "bidding war" among other companies as soon as their contract expires. As of yesterday, Take-Two Interactive has ended any merger possibilities with third-party megapublisher Electronic Arts. If, in fact, the Houser Brothers do leave Take-Two, the streets of Grand Theft Auto will never be the same.
