'Batman' Comic Pulled For Language

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, September 10, 2008 11:13 AM

We always knew Batgirl was a dirty, dirty girl, but we were shocked at just how dirty her mouth turned out to be in "All Star Batman And Robin The Boy Wonder" #10".

The comic was printed with black bars over offending curse words, but the ink was too light to actually cover the offensive language, meaning comic readers could see lines like these (but without the stars):

  • "little jailbait C**T's making us look bad... we cut her come on..."
  • "sweet piece in sweet slices... tasty sliced booty the little C**T..."
  • "And these A***OLES make a devil's fortune of it."

And more! Batgirl herself says

  • "Sell your poison somewhere else. This arcade belongs to the F***ing Batgirl."

Pretty badass, but too much for the comic's readers. DC ordered the offending copies destroyed as opposed to sold. (Dear comic book collectors, get them!)

We're surprised that this panel from an early 50s Batman book wasn't censored.

I don't see why DC had to pull a dick move like recalling the comics. Unless I've totally missed something, it seems like most comic fans are at least in the 20-30 range these days. We're far from the era of comics being kiddie-friendly. I thought this is why companies like Marvel ditched the comics code authority and started putting ratings on the covers. DC should have stuck an advisory on the cover, even if the black bars had been fully dark.
