'Final Fantasy XI' 24-Hour Boss Nerfed

Posted by Patrick Roche-Sowa - Friday, August 22, 2008 4:15 PM

You might have heard recently that there is a boss in Square Enix's MMO Final Fantasy XI that takes 24 hours to take down. However, Square Enix has heard your cries of exhaustion and plan to tone-down the difficulty on the Pandemonium Warden, Absolute Virtue, and Jailer of Love in an update sometime in September.

We think this is a cop out, I mean, it was kind of awesome that you had a boss in your game that could only be taken down by a full on 24-hour straight battle. That's the stuff heroes are made of. Suck it up, people! You're playing an MMO, you're not supposed to have a life outside of the game! Let's see some dedication!

Check out Casey Schreiner's rant about the Pandemonium Warden boss in this week's MMO Report.

agreed. that's definitely worth bragging about. Also, it gives you something to work towards so that you're not like the next guy who also put hundreds of hours into the game.

u got skillz.

im not an mmo player but i would imagine that 24 straight hours of fighting one character would be idiotic and extremely tedious now if they were to make that boss fight into segments that would all equal 24 hrs or maybe even more im sure people wouldnt get so upset, but thats just me

el oh el, SE finally listening to fans? ...calling it a 24 hour battle is a little overrated though. Any new boss in this game is going to take long to kill until you develop some type of strategy for it.. examples: Kirin, Tiamat, Jorm, Vrtra. My question is why release something like this when Absolute Virtue is still impossible to defeat on most servers.

wait, since when is final fantasy 11 an MMO? I thought it was just a normal RPG without any of that gay online stuff.

A true MMO player shouldn't be daunted by a mere 24 hour boss; in fact my friend Boll Weevil has just started a new tech project to make sure the need for sleep or sustenance never slows his gaming again. He started by relocating his gaming rig to his bathroom so that he could play whilst perched upon his toilet and now that hes added an IV, feeding tube, and professional nurse to the equation hes become a near unstoppable force in the World of Warcraft.

Yes FFXI is old news, atleast SE knows how to properly make MMO's and implement expansions without hurting itself, unlike Blizzard. New Final Fantasy MMO to come in the next couple of years, finally..

I think it's a bad idea to drop the hours required to take down a boss. I'm quite sure a lot of thought and going back-and-forth during development happened, so obviously SquareEnix must have felt it was appropriate. And we also have to remember, MMO's are way more popular in Asia than here in the States and they are also treated deadly serious. Think about all the headlines, how many players in the "Western World" have you heard of succumbing to playing an MMO?

@Slash5150
I just closed my FFXI account. I'm thinking about playing that free MMORPG Concerto Gate by Square-Enix when it comes out. I'm also from the Unicorn server if anyone asks what server I was from.
