Blogger Arrests Rising Worldwide

Posted by John Manalang - Wednesday, August 13, 2008 4:14 PM

Freedom of speech can turn around can bite your behinds. And, evidently from the chart above (via TechCrunch), First Amendment rights can lead you behind bars. Arrests on bloggers have been on a rise annually, and from the looks it, it'll continue this year. Here are some examples from the source:

  • Josh Wolf (USA; August, 2006): “For videotaping a burning police car.”
  • Hu Jia (China; December, 2007): “For posting his vocal critiques of human rights abuses and environmental degradation in China and calling the Olympics a ‘human rights disaster.’”

We won't get in trouble for posting flame-war igniting news....would we?

you must be really naive to think that free speech ever existed.

these are prime examples that it does not

Is it a surprise? First guy probably set it unfire him self. And for China its been well known its illigal to "Question the Government"

Well, I guess I better start removing my myspace blogs. After all, they mainly consist of self opinionated game reviews and theories as to how the universe came to be (note: my theories oppose the religious views of the universe).

To quote Hank Hill:

"You can have all the free speech you want, within the bounds of the law."

Really, some people take the concept of "freedom" way too far. There's another word for total freedom, it's called anarchy. Trust me, the world is better off with it's limitations.

So no video taping of burning police cars anymore ? hear that cnn,abc and fox.

Mkay....so they've gone from 5 to 35.
That's not really that big a rise when you consider that more people are becoming bloggers.
Though arrests may be going up, the percentage of bloggers getting arrested is probably going down.

our government wont be happy till we are all behind bars. RISE UP AND TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK

This story is kina bogus. Here's why:

Josh Wolf - Actually arrested for REFUSING to turn over the video to a FEDERAL GRAND JURY! He obviously had the right to film it but he ignored a FEDERAL SUBPEONA! The tape was also shot during a G8 protest and was probably just needed as evidence. For more info google FREE JOSH WOLF.

Hua Jia - lives in China... where prostitution is not only legal but respected (sometimes forced) and they shoot you for being gay. Apparently they'll imprison you for speaking up for human rights too. Not really surprising.

We will eventually either become slaves to corporations and govt or we will become tribes and the "Wild West" mentality will take over.
