Time To Go Backwards?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Wednesday, August 06, 2008 3:49 PM

This is the greatest news story ever in history. It's a little complicated, but it's worth it. Here's what's going on:

The yet-to-be-switched-on Hadron Collider in France is the biggest particle collider on earth.  CERN built it  to collide protons with each other to unlock some of the mysteries of particle physics, including producing a higgs boson, a presently theoretical quantum particle that has never been observed.

There are two possible problems with the collider:

  1. Some think it will create a "mini-blackhole" and destroy the entire planet.
  2. Others think turning on the machine will create a time paradox in which it impossible that the machine ever worked.

It's freaking our mind to think about it, so we'll re-print this:

As possible “evidence” for such a backwards-in-time effect, the authors cite the now-canceled Superconducting Super Collider (SSC)—a particle accelerator that was meant to hunt the Higgs and was partially constructed in Texas before Congress pulled the plug on the project. As the authors write in their paper: “Such a cancellation after a huge investment is already in itself an unusual event that should not happen too often. We might take this event as experimental evidence for our model in which an accelerator with the luminosity and beam energy of the SSC will not be built.”

We'll all get to find out what happens in Late October, when the machine is scheduled to be switched on... unless, of course, it never gets turned on, which might prove that it does get turned on in the future, but time flows backwards and something happens in the past to prevent it being used in the future to begin with...

Fire that bitch up

Posted by zulia - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:19 PM

Does anyone else think this sound alot like End Times as fortold in Revelations. I;m not some religous nut case but these scientists need to really consider what would happen if a micro black hole is created within our atmosphere.

I'll have my shotgun ready to start rioting before the world ends

Posted by mbslim - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:21 PM

whoa..... i mean..... whoa....

Posted by mercisan - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:22 PM

Uh, yeah. Right. Exactly.
WTF?
"destroy the entire planet" is pretty much the only thing I understood from that. Maybe there is a reason why I suck at physics so much.

God, I hate physics!!!!

Just as long as they lemme know when the world is about to blow up so I can masturbate one last time

Wow, the black hole thing would suck..

"End times in Revelations"? Huh so where are these four horsemen let alone all the seals meant to be broken I'm no religous nut as a matter of fact far from it but really.....5,000 dollar suit....COME ON!!!!!

Destroy planets? Isn't that what the Death Star is for?

Posted by P_Reston - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:26 PM

That's all well and good, but is it Backwards Compatable?

Posted by defiantketchup - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:26 PM

can someone call up Gordon Freeman please. Tell him to bring his trusty crowbar... we're gonna need it.

I like physics and other sci-fi stuff and also the wost theing that could happing is when its turn on and nothing happings beucause one of the scientists for got to pulg it in lol.

Posted by The_bobman - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:39 PM

What if we get the Harlem Globetrotters to figure out away to deal with the time paradox? Then does it work safely or do we still just create a "mini-blackhole?"

Posted by ATLjumppilot - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:41 PM

Sounds like the day they throw the switch will be a groundhog day scenario. Which translates into do wtf you want all day with no consequences. Anyone up for a bank heist and televised car chase?

Posted by kikook - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:41 PM

They are some idiots out their. The only way a black hole is made is when a sun three times are size mind you goes supernova, Time going backwards on the hand shows it stupidity on its own....But think about how big we are to the sun, Do you think that a machine that is .0001% the size of Earth would be big enough to make a black hole that needs Large amount of gravity and mass that is 3times the amount of our sun? Yeah plain stupidity.

Posted by kamkilla18 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:45 PM

Posted by VayMasters - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:47 PM

If everyone was afraid of what "might" happen, I highly doubt the human race would have made it this far.

Posted by decept - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:49 PM

They are dumb, first off there is no way anything like that would create a "backward time flow" Its impossible. Also the mini black hole would not destroy the earth. They have created mini black holes before, but they are so small they last for a split second and dont do anything. Read up on science before you guys post and comment about it.

@deline

So did I, until I decided to take a class. Now I hate it, and I still have one more to go :(

But it would suck if nothing happens. A black hole in the earth sounds cool. Not so sure it will be, though.

Posted by rbee90 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 4:58 PM

DAMN NATURE! YOU SCARY!

Posted by rbee90 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:05 PM

@ddecept

well dude...i disagree at the mini black hole part...i saw this show on discovery channel...wer dat jurrasic park guy hosted, which i thought he was american, but he was brit...he said that a black hole even if it was the size of black pen marked dot,can engulf the whole earth,or worse, the whole solar system...awesome huh? DAMN NATURE! YOU SCARY!

Posted by kikook - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:06 PM

The French need to watch Discovery Science, They show enough stuff to prove both those theories wrong in one show.

Posted by Druidblue - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:11 PM

Leading physicists have stated that any "mini black hole" that were to occur would almost instantly close back up because they wouldn't have the energy to sustain themselves. Supposedly even Stephen Hawking said as much.

Still, the rewards could be great- we could find entrances to parallel universes, even find out how to enter into the afterlife to visit dead relatives, and then return (assuming the afterlife is simply another dimensional state).

Physics are fun!

Posted by rbee90 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:19 PM

@druidblue

that would be so cool...its like some twilight zone crap, cept that its real! but i dnt wanna go to the afterlife, i dont wanna spoil the fun, i wanna go to the past though, experience the 60's and the 80's...70's?...disco?..meh, not interested...

Posted by Poopelyse - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:32 PM

come on guys, haven't you ever seen that one Sci Fi channel movie with the mini blackhole? It didn't engulf the whole earth and everything; just the stuff close to it. jeez you guys are a little behind on the science behind original Sci Fi channel movies.

Posted by Syndikyt - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:33 PM

Why are we colliding particles? If i don't get to play Fallout 3 because of a black hole made from some stupid scientist who wanted to see particles crash into each other "just to see what happens" i am gonna be pissed.

Posted by Poopelyse - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:37 PM

oh yeah, and haven't you guys seen Galaxy Quest? in order for the humans to get back to earth, they just flew through a black hole and popped out by earth. if we got sucked into a black hole nothing, bad would happen; we would just end up in some other solar system with aliens. duh!

Posted by Popofish - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:41 PM

maybe this higgs particle actually causes humans to turn into zombies, in which case fire that Sonovbitch up. think about it we wont have to wait for Left 4 Dead after it gets delayed for some dumbass reason

Posted by EldritchWarlord - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:48 PM

kikook, all you need to make a black hole is a quantitiy of mass dense enough to compact itself infinitly.

Really though, a micro black hole would more than likely just evaporate before it had any effect on the Earth.

Posted by carlogz - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 5:51 PM

...So what are the Pro's again because well... I don't want to die yet...

Posted by something1337 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:01 PM

At least it's in France, so if it does create a mini black hole there is no real big loss there.

Posted by knight35966 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:02 PM

Atleast we won't have too pick between two sucky Presidential canidates. If we can go back in time then we can go back to the start of time and find out how everything was realy created. Just immagine our suprise if we find out some huge alien just took a dump on earth and we are what grew from it. You know what that would explain a lot of stuff.

Posted by ssp949 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:04 PM

There's a show about this on Discovery Channel called The Big Bang Machine. They said that the machine almost definitely won't create any black holes, but even if it did they would be microscopic and would evaporate instantly. They technically had to say it might create a black hole, but tiny black holes could theoretically just appear anywhere in the universe, so i agree with prematurefate000. Fire that bitch up. I don't know about the time paradox thing tho

Posted by silentslayer0637 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:10 PM

Where's Captain Planet when you need him???

Posted by laryri - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:12 PM

Snake! You can't do that! You've created a time paradox!

Posted by SynicVance - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 6:14 PM

Hey if this opens a door to a parallel universe maybe we can get Heath Ledger back to reprise his role as the joker. If that isn't a possibility then why the hell are we doing it? Honestly, life was way more fun when I had an imagination and used to play with cardboard boxes and build forts, all this discovery of knowledge, has done nothing but make our lives more complicated and less fun. Instead of having to fish or hunt for wild boar (sounds fun) I have to sit in a cubicle typing up reports. Instead of bopping a girl on the head and dragging her back to the cave, I have to get a job and take showers and stuff...damn you science!!!!!

shouldn't they test this thing somewhere barren? or some place with less things for this "black hole" to consume? Because, y'know... FRANCE would make a great meal for that thing.

If they make a black hole, which I highly doubt, it probably wont be big enough to cause any amount of damage.

Posted by F3LIX - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 7:03 PM

several of you are correct, a microscopic black hole would in all probability close in on itself, but imagine the possibilities of being able to accomplish something like that. parallel universes, etc

Posted by DatNasty1216 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 7:42 PM

Why would they create that in the first place

Posted by kikook - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 7:46 PM

@DatNasty
They are making it to try to recreate the Big Bang...But to the point, No body has created a blackhole in a labatory decept your an idiot you say look up science when you obviously havent..They have not created a blackhole in a labotory, Because Blackholes never go away like you said the lab test ones did. And Blackholes need gravity sooooo powerful that we could never do it, Because you cannot create artifical gravity. Til we can it cant happen....Sorry saying this so late.

Posted by mrmiata7 - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 7:56 PM

I read that scientists have affected rudimentary teleportation using photons in which they were able to send a distance of 30 feet. Sometime in the future the phrase "beam me up Scotty" will take on a whole new aura of reality.

Posted by chucknorrispwnz - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 8:22 PM

Those scientists should remember the saying "Curiousity killed the human race." If this turns people into deranged monsters, I'm never going to leave Will Smith's side...ever. I kind of want to see what it does though. If this does go wrong, I'm retreating to my evil underground lair with hundreds of sexy supermodels. Bring on the Apocolypse!!!

John Titor told me it was safe!!!

Posted by xXIHEARTMETALXx - Wednesday, August 6, 2008 8:36 PM

Well, Hawking Radiation says that a mini-black hole would evaporate almost instantly so I'm not worring about that too much. I'm scared for the other 'theoretical' things that come out. What they are doing is making a machine to prove things that scientists can't see themselves. Oh yea, and G4 is slightly off.
They show this to the World in October with results in a report but they test it either THIS week or next to make sure it works. We actually could all die before anything good shows up on my console/pc.

Turn it on already. Black hole shows up and we're all gone in less than an second anyway. If not, maybe we'll learn something cool from it. Or maybe it will cause a huge paradox and I'll have to make my dad and mom get together at the school dance by playing guitar with the band. I should probably get back in touch with the Doc before October, just in case.

usually these things jst end up being a big bust. in the first test of nuclear bomb case their were bets going on to whether or not the atoms would continue to collide and within them consume up the entire planet and maybe even farther. but even if their is the slight chance their mite be a huge catoclysmic event the lives of 7 billion pple and all life on this planet ending jst so that one scientist can go back in time and eat the meal he had yesterday

Maybe it will correct the Xbox 360 red ring of death... Nahhh, I just think the whole black hole thing could happen though making the earth pull in three or four times its mass making fat people even fatter and heaver.

ok, i have found the pro's of this machine.

1. If it creates a time paradox, we can blame everything on that. Oh the economy is bad? well it because of that damn time paradox.

2. If it creates a black hole, we can just throw bad people and young hollywood stars in it. and turn it into a japanese game show.

3. If it opens a parellel universe, maybe instead of zombies and aliens pouring out into earth, it could be hot naked horny chicks. There might be a universe out there that contains nothing but beautiful women.

now that i have stated the pro's, throw that bitch in the bottom of the deepest ocean. If it is turned on, the most likely scenario is we die. but if zombies came out, i would be stoked. I think all of us have had pleanty of experience in the zombie survival area. We could band together and definetly survive.

The Black Hole wont even possibly destroy the earth, not even last for more than a couple of minutes. It wouldnt even survive because the BH would be too small to last, because the gravity of Earth would overwhelm the hole, if it would even appear at all. In order to make a black hole it would require an object of a sun sized mass with same energy (the power of a trillion nukes!) unleashed from a supernova explosion to have the energy collapse into a real BH. Oh and by the way, if a star explodes, it does not have to always turn into a black hole. Thats just something to remind the reader. Particles accelerating at nearly the speed of light and purposefully colliding with each other shouldn't pack the tiniest amount of energy a star in super nova might have. Oh and I personally think that in the center of a Black Hole is not a wormhole (which I could be wrong, but everyone makes mistakes) but a giant billion degree oven. Mmmmmmmm... I smell smores! Yum!

Dont forget that this thing is located in France, so just in case a Black Hole will appear, all the fine food in France can clog up the Hole* and save us all. (* means ^Innuendo!^ lol)

Wow....... I read a recent poll saying that the teens in America are having a diminishing value of actually using their heads save for latter age (20's)...... I'm guessing that was wrong, apparently no one is thinking for themselves anymore. This whole "revelations/ enod of the world/ micro black hole" talk is a bit out there.... go an wikipedia what this thing does... and learn....
