EA Says They're Not About Crappy Licensed Games

Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, August 04, 2008 1:31 PM

According to John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, EA is not about taking a licensed property and making a crappy game out of it. Well, you could have fooled all the world of gaming with that line. Or, more precisely, we'll never be fooled by that.

In an interview with Stephen Totilo at E3, Riccitiello lays down the new laws of the changing EA land. Riccitiello says, "I think what redeems our industry is quality, and I think we take a step back every time we take a license and exploit it with a crappy game. That's not what we're about. What's happening right now is sort of the core creativity of our team is really coming forward. When you see titles like Dead Space and Mirror's Edge, or something like Boom Blox - these are sort of like art teams creating something new. We've always been good at that."

Although history would indicate this to be a pack of lies, we're willing to let the dust settle on some of their newer initiatives and acquisitions before casting our usual, stark gamer judgments.

Here's to a better EA!

the char from dead space looks stupid. i dont care how good the game looks, or plays, he looks like a dune reject.

Battle for Middle Earth I and II were some of the best licensed games in recent memory and I think EA does better than all right with their sports licenses (though the exclusivity is bunk). For as many bad licensed games as have been made it's worth pointing out and supporting the good ones (though I agree they are too few).

I wonder if it's Hollywood studios or game makers that feel they need scramble to get a game out when its movie is released. Countless games have been ruined because they were pushed out the door and licensed games are the worst type for this problem. Gamers will play good games regardless when they come.

their sports games suck, are u kidding me? when was a great fresh madden last released that had innovation? i haven't purchased any ea game, new or used. their product might be ok,but the way they do business is horrible for gamers.

I'm not going to call them liars, but they have to make me a believer...

bull crap...

EA is the definitions of crappy games, look it up, its true.

dead space looks like it might be good, mirrors edge is way to bright, id like to keep my eye sight, and everything else, crap on crap with crap stirred in.

If EA does not take good games and turn them to crap then what the hell happened to the NFS series??? I think the last one i truly thought was innovative was High Stakes.

I was never a big fan of EA games, but did like some of the stuff they came out with. They burned the bridge with me when they got an exclusive license with the NFL - effectively killing one of my favorite game franchises ever.

I will probably get Facebreaker if I like the demo though. =(

I use to have a grudge against EA, esp. over Stranger's wrath, then I got over it.

It seems like EA is moving in a better direction. Let's see if they make it.
