'Diablo 3' Dev Says No Art Direction Change

Posted by John Manalang - Friday, August 01, 2008 10:06 AM

To all those 52,000 Diablo activists who signed the online petition that demanded a change for Diablo III's art direction, we apologize. Blizzard Lead Designer Jay Wilson said to MTVMultiplayer that "there's no going back now", in changing the art direction to the company's highly anticipated sequel to Diablo II. He added:

“We’re very happy with how the art style is. The art team’s happy. The company’s happy. We really like this art style, and we’re not changing it.”

Wilson said that one of the decisions to make Diablo III's environment a more vibrant one compared to previous titles is to reduce any monotonous color tone throughout the game. "You'll be playing Diablo III for potentially hundreds of hours, and being in one type of environment with one type of look… it really became boring very quickly," said Wilson.

As for the World of Warcraft graphic influence over Diablo III, Wilson said that Blizzard games will most likely be influenced by their own titles. “I think it’s impossible for us to not be influenced by our other creations,” he said. Diablo III for the PC and Macintosh platform will be released "when it's done", according to Blizzard.

I am happy. Its looks fine the way it is.

I don't know why anyone ever even starts these petitions. No one is going to care. Especially not the people the petition is aimed at.

In this case it was especially stupid because its blizzard. by the time the game is even officially announced, the game has been in developement for years and its way too late to change anything that drastic anyway.

I still won't be playing it.
I don't play PC games.
Or give my money to Blizzard.

Boring!? Heck, I still play D2, and I'm not bored of it. But, I believe this change in art style is a good change. Can't wait til it comes out!

i will lose another 6 years or so to d3 i bet.

boo hoo, I like the art style. At least you see the sun, I'm tired of games where no matter how long you play the game, the sun never seems to go down. And come on, making it bright only makes sense! Who fights the undead in the dark?!

Posted by DamienHell - Friday, August 1, 2008 11:01 AM

sun never seems to come up*
all day games bother me too

"boo hoo, I like the art style. At least you see the sun,"

LOL!!! Boy, do I see the sun over here alright, LOL!! Man, is killin!

But I gotta say, 52,000 activists signed that?? That's a lot! They'll do only one thing.....you buy or not...

Art Style is fun. I like it.

Posted by LawsiAko - Friday, August 1, 2008 11:46 AM

Change is good
Looking forward to see new characters

what do you have in mind??

Posted by StrangeOne - Friday, August 1, 2008 11:56 AM

The people who start these petitions are the ones who argue over the minor details in comic books that contradict each other....ie the comic guy in The Simpsons "Diablo 3 worst art direction Evar"

remember silly people change is good...like moving out of your moms basement or putting on new underpants

Posted by droop4 - Friday, August 1, 2008 12:05 PM

Haha i dont know what their problem is, i actually like it.

Besides, 1. its been in development for to long,
2. they know every single person in the list will buy it anyway haha

I like the style of the game too. I've played the heck out of Diablo 2 and it was fairly bright most of the time. Only 'dark' parts were when you were in a dungeon where it's SUPPOSED to be dark. If they want a dark setting, it's called Gamma Control... use it!

Thank you blizzard for not letting a bunch of idiots change a great game.

Can't believe people are mad because they added some more color to the game. If you signed that petition your A) an idiot for thinking you could change it B) an for getting pissy about color in your game.

Posted by UsefulPlayer1 - Friday, August 1, 2008 12:24 PM

^^ agreed, used to be darker my ass, I loved how they took Diablo and gave it a touch up. Its the Diablo I love.

Posted by DirkDiggler9000 - Friday, August 1, 2008 1:14 PM

I actually think the game looks bad ass. I loved Diablo 1, never played Diablo 2. Guess those 52k ppl are SOL. It's only a game damnit lol cry me a river.

I bet ya a hundred bucks those 52000 people will still be getting the game and playing it.

PEOPLE LETS JUST WAIT AND SEE.. BUT DID DIABLO 2 INFLUENCED UR OTHER TITTLE AS WELL??? I DONT THINK SO I THINK DIABLO 2 IS VERY UNIQUE BUT.. WE STILL NEED TO WAIT AND SEE HOW THE GAME GOES AND WORKS REMEMBER highly anticipated sequel to Diablo II!!!

Posted by mac11s (BANNED) - Friday, August 1, 2008 4:25 PM

IF THE GAME WILL LOOK LIKE WOW I RATHER PLAY WOW AND GET MY OLD PC BACK AND PLAY DIABLO 2 HEY I WANNA TRY A PALADIN MHMM....

Posted by Ieyke - Friday, August 1, 2008 5:13 PM

I speak for far more than just the 52,000 people when I say F*@# you Blizzard.
Of course we'll still be getting Diablo 3. We wouldn't campaign to get them to change it unless it was something that we actually cared about in the first place.

"one type of environment with one type of look… it really became boring very quickly," is the THE most retarded statement I've read in days, and that's sad, because I've been on the internet: the place of infinite stupidities. I'm STILL playing Lord Of Destruction. Am I bored? Not remotely.

Blizzard's customers have done them solid. We deserve the game to be a worthy sequel to the series, and right now its just not 100% of the way there because the art is terribly off.

Who the kcuf cares about graphics, if the game is good?

Posted by RottenRonnie - Saturday, August 2, 2008 4:09 PM

Blizzard rocks. Diablo Rocks. To all whiners and complainers I say "go suck a big fat one!" and "get a LIFE!". I am glad Blizzard decided to stand their ground.

good decision

Posted by n00bSector5 - Monday, August 4, 2008 8:05 AM

I'm sure the game is still going to rock. regardless of whatever changes they made to the art direction.
