Rumor: Comic-Con Leaving San Diego?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Thursday, July 24, 2008 2:21 PM

Here's a hot rumor from Comic-Con: The big convention might be leaving San Diego for different climes. Variety is reporting that Los Angeles and Las Vegas are both trying to lure the geek-gathering and pop culture explosion to their respective cities.

It's just gotten too big for the beachside resort town. "We can't accommodate the people we need to," laments Comic-Con marketing director David Glanzer. "(This year) we had a wait list of exhibitors in excess of 300. We sold out before the doors even opened."

As you might expect, San Diego will fight to keep their beloved con in its spiritual home: "Comic-Con is a homegrown, San Diego-born, bred and maintained entity," says Bill Harris, deputy press secretary for San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. "We have a lot of pride in it....We are going to continue to work with Comic-Con to accommodate their growth needs in any way we can," he says.

The economic impact of the Con is estimated between $40 million and $60 million, so there's a lot riding on where it's held! What do you think: Would Vegas Comic-Con or L.A. Comic-Con be better? Worse? Indifferent?

'The big convention might be leaving San Diego for different climes.' Is... climes even applicable here? *head tilt*

Also... Las Vegas? That'd be the stupidest place for it to move if it moved. I'm pretty sure everyone can see that.

Vegas? Egad, no!!!

If it did move to Los Angeles, I wouldn't complain much. As much as I love San Diego, it seems apparent that they need larger digs, and S.D. just can't provide that. True, there would be negative aspects to having it in LA as well, but also many positive aspects too.

Comic-con anywhere but San Diego would be a big steamy pile of poo.

I've been to comic-con many years except this year (boo to the ones who sold it out) But I'm still going this saturday to keep the tradition of going because I love the scene of it. The beach and the locals and the freaky geeks we end up with. San Diego to me IS Comic con and I can't see it any other way. Yeah, it sucks when the train gets in the way of the thousands of people trying to get to the convention, but it's still a tight and secure area where all fans can get together in local bars and restaurants.

As for Las Vegas? That would be the most stupidest thing ever and would lack attendance due to hot weather and transportation.

Los Angeles? I'm from LA, and sure it would be nice to have it here but I wouldn't want it.
It would be too overcrowded with newbies and I just think it'll get too crazy. And it's not as nice as where it's located now. You just can't beat a nice sunny, beachy location like San Diego.

I hope it moves, I am going all 4 days and let me tell you that today was HORRIABLE! People can barely walk without stepping on one another. Larger venue is needed for both safety and comfort. I am thinking about selling my 4 day pass.

Sorry to hear that Dukefnnukem. I'll try to fix that next year.

I'd love it to be here in Vegas, but I agree, LA would be much better.

Most people who go to it wouldn't have to drive as far if it was in LA. Plus, LA is a lot more movie, gaming, and comic centric right?

As for Vegas being a bad choice? I don't think so. It's worked out just fine for CES and many many other conventions. The heat really isn't a problem because everywhere has air conditioning, plus Vegas is already kind of a freak show, so comic-con would fit right in.

Success brings growth and i would mention that New York City is the place where most comic artists live. Manhattan is the communications center of the world and lets move it there. New York hosts The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Jon Stewart Show, The Jimmy Fallon Show, David Letterman, The View, The Tyra Banks Show, and lots more.In other words, its a public relations dream . we could do the show from there as early as 2010. And dont forget its the print media capitol. It also connects the US with Europe.
