Is Xbox Live Destined To Go Free?

English newspaper The Guardian is asking a provocative question via their weblog: How long can Microsoft keep charging for Live? Now that Games for Windows Live is free, is it only a matter of time until Microsoft un-costs the excellent online component it has built for the 360?

We could see it going either way, honestly, and it probably depends on the long-term health and success of the PS3's online offerings.

Back when they first talked about the 360 they said the reason it wasnt free is because to do that it would have to have ADs on it. Which it has since for along time and yet they still charge and dont lower the price

Xbox live is already "kinda" free. It's free on the weekends (and I think on major holidays) so if you wanted to play online you could do it then Slash5150. That's the 'silver' membership and the gold is the $50/yr one.

This sure would shut all the sony drones up though who brag about their free(sh-tty) online service.

The more Sony adds to PSN (while keeping it free), the more likely I'd think MS would be to make Live for 360 free. And I think if they DID make it free, they'd get a lot more subscribers, bragging rights, and the costs could even be recouped if those new subscribers start buying things on the marketplace. I know they already CAN buy things on the marketplace, but being able to play online against people I think makes you more likely to want to do that (or be aware of DLC).

doesn't matter how much anyone adds to their online. Microsoft has better online than nintendo or sony and people will pay for what's better. I don't think PSN is bad and I don't think Live is perfect, but most people don't want to settle for second even if it's free.

Well, along with pretty much anyone it would be nice to keep the extra 50 bucks. But is is only 50 bucks a year so its nothing to cry about, especially since live is so good. Heck, I'm a new adopter to the 360 (only had mine for a week as of today) and I love the online experience.

Hmmmmm guess who came up with LAN parties and playing online with a console in the first place..... gee, wasn't that Microsoft with the x-box? If anything everyone's been copying MS. Avatars are nothing new, they've been around almost as long as gaming itself, so stop running around saying that Sony and Nintendo are original. Sony is now copying Achievements and listening to music while playing a game at the same time, every game Nintendo is releasing yet another series of mini-game titles.

As for XBL going free, I kinda hope it doesn't, its been shown that every gaming server that has its money cut off quickly goes in the crapper, just ask anyone who was playing D2 when WoW was released.

i play on xbox live and play on psn but i dont get what makes one better then the other? plz innnform me someone.
cuz basicly your doiing the samething on both you have friends list, your still playing online, there chat, um you can down movies, games ect.... and they both now has some points system.... so yeah big diff is i pay for one and not the other..

Xbox Live is much more reliable, has a better matchmaking system, better skill ranking system, and just about everything else is better.

And for everyone complaining about Live being $50 a year, come on! You're telling me you can't let go of $4 a month, but you can go out and buy a $350 console and $60 games?

Dreamcast was the first to bring online to the consoles, not the xbox.

MS Avatars is a rip off of Miis, and Nintendo had Mii's concept first on their Famicon. if you don't believe me, there's a youtbe link that proves it.

Listening to Music while you game? I was never into that, Never used it on my Xbox, don't even have saved music on it either. I use it for Games.

As for Achievments/trophies, hey PS3 owners wanted asked for it and got it. I don't care for it but those who do...

But I sure as hell didn't ask for Avatars. Don't want them...

Unless you work for Microsoft, stop defending a company that doesn't give two sh@ts about you!!!!

First of all: all you PS3 guys who go to XBox topics just to taut the PS3 and how you think it is better...STOP!!! It is annoying as hell, and it makes you look like a jerk.

Now, as far as LIVE going free: it would be nice, but as many have said, it is less likely to happen as long as people are willing to pay for it. Me personally, I would rather PAY and NOT find ads all over the place. However, "a penny saved is a penny earned", so I wouldn't mind with it being free either. (Spartan_458: you make a gr8 point)

Well if LIVE ever does go free it would have a free version of LIVE with the ads and if you want to get the extra perks then you pay the extra money.

I can't remember, but isn't Sony going to do that with HOME? (whenever it gets out) I can't remember, oh well.

Personally, i don't care which is better than the other. The only thing that irks be about PSN is that it logs me out for no reason whatsoever sometimes, but when that happens i just turn off the PS3 and go watch TV for a little bit to let it rest.

The only system right now that is legal for me is the ps3. The wii, 360 and psp all are illegal. So if xbox live is free that would only make it better for me. I won't care if i get banned from it lol. Oh spartan_458 xbox live sucks when you get in a room full of cursing 12 year olds ranting racial slurs every 10 seconds. Trust me I actually stopped playing halo 3 with a mic. I never had an incident on psn playing any game I got that.

I can't believe some people wish Live (gold) to remain a paid subscription. That is retarded. I have to say, I give props to Sony on "trying" to keep their online gaming free.

I want as much as I can get for free. PSN is not that bad, considering it's free. Of course I prefer Live, but if I'm given the option of free vs. paid, I'll take free.

ok, im 15 and honestly my parents think they have better things to spend money on than a $50 a year card, $60 games each, a second $50 controller, microsoft points, and the system itsself which for me was $378.that could get a little expensive.as long as the servers run smootly it will be ok.but microsoft needs to give its loyal fanbase something instead of robbing us.because eventually playstaion3 will catch on.and microsoft will be in deep doo-doo.:/

What a bunch of losers. $50 a year is still $250+ over the console's lifespan. We could get several more games with that money. But if you wanna piss it away on a service that's being bested by FREE options (PS3 and PC easily, Wii just needs more online games), I can't help ya.

The 'get what you pay for' argument, if you wanna play that card, is why the PS3 hardware is highly superior. Red ring anyone? Lol. PS3 costs more because it actually works.

I've been saying all along that M$ is greedy to charge for this crap. Everything else is free and does just as good a job, M$ knows this. They gotta step up their game to compete.

I bought a 360 back in January but i havent gotten in on the X-BOX LIVE because i'm NOT PAYING to play a game i just bought and have to PAY to play it online. Thats just stupid. We should be able to play the games we pay for ONLINE for free ZERO CHARGE, but if you want to buy maps or levels or characters or any upgrades then by all means then you should have to pay, thats fair.(sorta) But PLAYSTATION NETWORK has it right, its free to PLAY online theirs no charge unless you want something additional then you pay to play. I would much rather buy new games or pay for gas then have to pay some online fee's. I'm already paying for my internet service i dont need more bills Microsoft.

M$.... I'll let you in on a little secret.... the fact that Live isn't FREE is one of the checks on my list as to why I bought a PS3 2 years ago.

Plus, I'm not into all the trophies and achievements because all that shows is that you have probably forgotten what daylight looks like. And I don't want to be "friends" with anyone online. I have enough real life friends who have enough real life drama.

So the fact that I can pop COD4 into my PS3 and start playing online for FREE without any rigamaroo is perfect for me.

i dont know why people bitch so much about 50 dollars a year. people spend more then that on WoW each year and thats one game. 50 bucks a year comes out to 4.17 a month, i mean come on, thats nothing.

i would rather pay for a great services and it continue to be a great services then get some half baked services for free.

Five bucks a month is nothing. If the fee goes away, so will customer service. Ten-minute outages will become "when-we-get-around-to-it" outages.

Also, the fee limits the number of 8-year-olds bogging down the CoD4 action.

i'd rather pay 50 bucks a year for xbox live because of all the new features they introduce and the quality connections... also you get to play multiple games and chat with friends unlike when i use to play wow and pay 15 bucks a month or $180.. also i like to pay 50 bucks a year so xbox can purchase exclusives that are for PlayStation like Final Fantasy

As for Live going free.. I stopped paying for gold when I seen my first ad on my "pay to be ad free" live account. M$ can kiss my you know what over there getting paid both ways junk.

I own all three systems. I just payed $50 for another gold membership and my 360 just crashed on me for the third time. Xbox owners, please tell me why I should keep this 360 and not get rid of it.

Like I said, I own all three systems and I'm not a fanboy of neither. The PSN is not as bad as the xbox owners say. As far as you saying you get what you pay for with the online service, didn't we get what we payed for buying the cheaper 360's that crash on us numerous times. I payed more for my PS3 but it has never let me down unlike my 360 and not only did I have to pay for xbox live I also had to buy a $100 wi-fi adapter which was included with my PS3 and Wii. Think about it guys, how long will we let microsoft rip us off.

You either get a steaming pile of garbage (anything PS3 related) or you pay for an engaging online experience (LIVE).

1st- every company copies off another. that's why we have better technology every year.
2nd- $50 is $50. i know a lot of other things i could buy with $50.
3rd- everyone keeps talking about paying $50 for no ads and excellent service. How about going to PSN and paying no money for no ads and just as good a service.
4th- i forgot who said microsoft is gonna pummel sony but sony just whooped microsoft's ass in the BD vs. HD DVD. this is just another reason why PS3 is better.
5th- As long as bill gates is with microsoft nothing will be free. you have to buy a seperate unit just to watch and hd movie. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. the online service should be free for buy the consoles and games. the consoles and games cost a lot already so why should you have to pay for something that is suppose to be for entertainment purposes.

The xbox 360 is a money pit. If you have the 20gig hard drive and need more space, wait til you here what they are going to charge you for their 100gig hard drive. $200. That's rediculous.

They shouldn't make it free. For God's sake its only 50 dollars a year! If you have the money to buy a 360 in the first place than you should be able to shell out 50 dollars. That is how they keep the service in such a good condition. And so what if not all that money goes directly to it. Big deal! That 50 dollars is helping to maintain the service. Without it we most likely wouldn't have as much movies, games, and everything else!

I won't pay for live. Won't do it. I'd rather get another game instead, and there's really not all that much that I want to play online. If there is a multi-platform title with online play (or without), I'll buy it on my PS3 and play for free with crisper graphics and a better controller, thanks. This would be a wise move for MSoft...

...but they won't. As someone said earlier, "if they can charge for it, they will" and this is exactly how 360 works. EVERYTHING costs money. MS charges $5 per "theme" (5 wallpapers) and then Sony gives me a free program to make themes myself (up to 16 wallpapers and custom icons). I can dump MP3s and AACs onto my PS3 with no trouble, 360 requires a full CD and painfully, slowly rips it's own MP3 files. Step it up MS- and give something back to the people that are paying your bills...

Ok, so the Dreamcast did do online gaming first... totally forgot about that system because it freakin failed, horribly. And yes, the PS2 did come out before the Xbox, but it didn't have an online service until MS had one for quite awhile.

And as for defending a company that doesn't give a @#%$ about me, you really shouldn't talk when you defend Sony. When the original $600 price was announced for the PS3 and people complained, Sony's response was that they wanted people to strive and save up for it. Then they went a ahead and released crap game after crap game, still haven't delivered Home like they promised it would be when the PS3 released. When Sony had a falling out with Dualshock, instead of admitting that they made a mistake, they claimed that vibrating controllers were last gen and weren't needed. And then there's PSN, yeah its free, but it so laggy, you get dropped from games every 3 seconds. Firmware patches? Seems like every time they release one, it screws up the system.

At least when MS releases a patch or an online service it works as promised.

I'll answer your question. I am willing to pay $4 a month for lag free games and quick downloads that pick up where they left off if they are interrupted.

And don't talk about crashing, remember GTA4 and the last patch freezing people's PS3's? And what addon's are you talking about? The standard 360 has everything you need to PLAY GAMES (the whole point of playing a console in the first place) listen to music and watch movies. The only really big problem the 360 has ever had is RROD but that's not really a problem anymore, it was down to 16% last feb. and alot of those were repeats from the bad batch of motherboards. Even if it does happen, MS fixes it for free for three years after the original one year warranty is up, so your covered this whole generation. How's the PS3's warranty? @redringofdeath. i spent my money on both the ps3 and the xbox 360. it just so happens my "blueray" player collects dust while i play most of my games on the 360. as such i'm happy to pay for the online service i use as opposed to the PSN which i'm never on

i don't think any psn supporters have any room to talk. our features were there on day one and continue to stack up. you have to wait around for sony to update your features and only made a major step in the past few months. how long is that since ps3 release? almost 2 years of waiting for something substantial, even though the new features are not even available across sony's entire game lineup? yeah i thought so.

Microsoft gold memberships has grown ridiculously especially in the last year. If I was them I wouldn't make it free, and I'm paying for live myself.

So bottom line is we are funding those exclusive games and allowing them to produce more things at a quicker rate because they have the money now. When XBLA games started it was one every few weeks, then one a week and now they have enough money to hire outside studios to produce 2 to 3 XBLA a week.

I don't mind paying $50 a year, and I sure don't mind that they use that money to give us more options.....NETFLIX, Universal, XBLA, FF13 etc.

My PS3 does not lag. I don't know where you got that from. All the stuff you say you can do on Xbox live I can do on PSN. So what's the difference, Hmmm oh yeah, mine is free. I know your 20gig HDD is not enough for you so when you find out what MS is charging you for additionall memory, $200 for 100gigs. Haha.

And Sony does not need a warranty. How many PS3s crashed, zero. How many 360s crashed?
Yeah I thought so.

That online service is not so good when your system is broke is it, but you still have to pay for it even when your system is broke which is every 2 months.

by the way i had 3 ps2s crash. my slimline finally held out but that's probably cause i didn't use it very much. trust me. soon you will see history repeating itself. i guess the question will be if sony is willing to fix yours when it goes out. cause not one of my ps2s was replaced for free

Your lying about your PS3 not lagging, my roommate's PS3 lags, my classmates PS3's lag, and my co-worker's PS3 lag.

The difference is that you get exclusive content for the 360 for games like GTA4 and Fallout3 that will NEVER be on the PS3. Why, because MS dropped an assload of cash to make sure, so my money is being put to good use.

PS3's actually have a tendancy to gather large amounts of dust have have a disk read error.
RROD doesn't happen that much anymore, I've personally only seen it once.

The 360 really only needs about 20g's of space because we don't have to install a huge file when we want to play something new, the only thing that goes to the hard drive is movies, music, game saves and downloaded content.

Face it, your an ill-informed idiot who claims things but never backs it up.

Where do you get your info from? Prove it that the 360 fails every 2 months. Cite a source, like I did about the warranty. The point I made earlier about Sony's reaction about people balking about the $600 price and how they handled losing dual shock was covered by the feed itself. Same with PS3's freezing and crashing. Do a search if you don't believe me or shut your face.

Again, if you think 360 does anything right how about YOU provide proof? Fact is 360 fails at everything possible and has been surpassed by both PS3 and Wii as far has hardware and games go. If I defended anybody it was nintendo!!! they had the mii concept first, since the famicon.

And you say the PSN Lags, then you must of never played PSN because there is hardly any lag when I play.

Same with live, i don't ever get lagged there either.

but its okay, there's nothing more pathetic then what you do, you're defending MS for charging... jeeze how old are you... Microsoft is the last company that should have fanboys... the only product of their's that is good is the 360, and they have problems with that as well, LIKE CHARGING. it would be better if it were free...

and to all those saying it was better free. think about this for a moment. it microsoft makes it free, every 13, 14, and 15 year old on the face of the earth with an internet connection would now be able to instantly connect to xbox live. doesn't sound like what i want to happen. there are enough of them as it is, and you know there are a lot more of them out there that don't have live or cant get live because they cant afford it, and that's fine by me.
