Microsoft Announces DirectX 11

Posted by Brian Leahy - Tuesday, July 22, 2008 3:29 PM

Today, at Gamefest 2008, Microsoft has announced DirectX 11 and will disclose their plans for the platform to game developers.

Don't go tossing your DirectX 10 card just yet, however. DX11 will be compatible with all DX10 cards, but there will be some specific, unannounced features that will require a new card.

DX11 will release with the next version of Windows and be released for Vista at that time. You've still got plenty of DX10 gaming left.

Hit the jump for the new announced features of DX11.

  • Full support (including all DX11 hardware features) on Windows Vista as well as future versions of Windows
  • Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
  • New compute shader technology that lays the groundwork for the GPU to be used for more than just 3D graphics, so that developers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor
  • Multi-threaded resource handling that will allow games to better take advantage of multi-core machines
  • Support for tessellation, which blurs the line between super high quality pre-rendered scenes and scenes rendered in real-time, allowing game developers to refine models to be smoother and more attractive when seen up close

If they really think that less then 2 years after a new OS which wasn't wholly accepted until a little over a year ago they can release not only a new OS but also a reason to need to buy a new graphics card then they are not only stupid, but insane too.

It wouldn't even be until early 2010 anyway, so what's the big deal? Personally, I think it's a good thing that they announced it now; if they get it to developers long enough before it's available to consumers, we might have some good games that use it on our hands when Windows 7 rolls around.

So they're already talking about the next version of Windows??? Glad I stayed off of the Vista bandwagon.

@bookshelf

Damn straight. Still using XP Pro and love it.

How many games made use of DX10? I can only think of a handful.

M$ policies suck.

Exactly why I've all but abandoned PC gaming in favour of consoles. I'll use my DirectX 10.1 card until it dies, then no more gaming PCs.

The only DirectX news that I would be interested in hearing is if they open sourced it.

This is good news. I don't know why everyone complains about vista. I have been using it since launch and have never encountered any problem with it. Get a big machine for a big OS. Honestly if you don't like the OS get a different one or write your own OS. See, there are two really good options.

The features look rather promising.

yeah

What a joke. FFS hardly no one uses DX10. Why would we need DX11 you nickel and dimeing cok blocks. Microsoft needs to get their respective head screwed on straight. I have vista I love it. However there are like 4 games that even use DX10. Sure loads of them are compatible with it but hardly none take advantage of it. Best example is Age of Crapnan.

I realize G4 is console central, but anyone swearing off gaming PCs in favor of consoles is a moron.
Sure, Vista fails at life which makes DX10 hard to use while avoiding Vista, but if the next version of Windows is a viable option and supports a new generation of graphics you'd be a fool not to have a gaming rig.
If any game on any system goes multiplatform PC will almost always be one of those platforms, and PCs very often have the best version of a game available (Team Fortress 2 for example), and the number of games exclusive to PCs far outweighs any of the consoles. Plus, nothing is a better control systrem than a mouse and keyboard for RTSs or FPSs, and with the exception of platformers they're pretty equal for controlling everything else.
