Facebook Gets a Facelift

Posted by Ty Colfax - Monday, July 21, 2008 3:23 PM

Facebook has unveiled a redesign for the social networking site. It was unleashed on Sunday to a small number of users and will receive a complete rollout to users overtime, we're guessing in an effort to ease server strain. So, if you're page hasn't changed yet, give it a few days.

The new design has enhanced "wall" action and is meant to better accommodate growing trends in micro-blogging, which Facebook wants to embrace to stay on top of competitors Friendster and MySpace.

First! But maybe they just want to keep up with MySpace's new look.

I find it's really a much weaker system. There are some high points, specifically the new publishing feature. It allows emphasis on stories that you want your friends to easily see. The problem is that the default is "FRIGGIN' HUGE!"

I also find the tabbed interface a little more prohibitive. When using facebook, you have, 'Your Profile.' Which includes all the relevant information in one place. The tabs don't do anything to really organize the information in a form that refines the interface and require a lot more user interaction.

The Wall is a major difference. No longer is it your message board for friends to simply leave comments, but it also supplements as your mini-feed. I find this completely distracting, because I'm forced to refine the wall to "Postings by Others."

The general concept of the redesign seems to be to refine pages and their sizes. The introduction of apps and the long pages that they caused by their implementation continue to annoy most users. Also, the recent implementation of the chat feature requires a relatively static webpage. (If you don't pop-out the chat.)

Users can change your own page by using the site's given URL (http://new.facebook.com). To read more, login and check the "About" section at the bottom of the page or get the URL yourself.

Xsuit, if you added the 'facebook pages update' application, you can find the link to check out the new facebook layout.

it's a big change and some time to get used to but i think it's a bit more organized. you dont hve all that stupid clutter of useless applications that you or ur friends added on one page, which is now on its own tab.

it has a wider feel to it which made me miss the whole compact thing that facebook had. it still has its bugs but all and all i think everyone should try it out to get used to so ppl wnt hve to complain about the big change
