Hands On: 'Chrono Trigger DS'

Posted by John Manalang - Friday, July 18, 2008 3:51 PM

During the prime days of the Super Nintendo, one role-playing game from Squaresoft stood above all. Its storyline intricately weaved time travel with mysterious characters and locations - from the prehistoric age to the future of robotics. That certain masterpiece, ladies and gentlemen, is none other than Chrono Trigger.

We're huge role-playing fanatics (seriously, what aren't we a fan of?), so we have begged Square-Enix to bring us a current-gen translation of their legendary title from 1995. And they heard our cries and the cry of a certain fanboy holding up his SNES cartridge (we won't disclose who), as Chrono Trigger DS will be made into a reality. Not only that, we bring you a hands demo straight from their E3 2008 build. Hit the jump.

Classic Image: Rest assured fans that Square-Enix decided not to tamper with the original SNES graphics when they ported the game into the DS. The classic 2D sprites were a welcome return - witnessing Crono waking up again in his room brought back so many nerd memories. Everything was the way it was before but thanks to the DS, you can now view your map at the same time you're playing which is a nice addition when you're traversing through dungeons. And speaking of dungeons, Square-Enix mentioned that there will be a brand new dungeon implemented into the DS version but unfortunately, the Square rep couldn't disclose any further information.

New Way To Play: Again, with the utilization of the touch screen, Chrono Trigger DS supports a brand way to control your adventures. The same controls are still intact from the SNES version, as you use the d-pad to move around, shoulder buttons to cycle through inventory and more. However, players now have the option to use the touch screen to move your character around by simply touching the direction you want your character to move to. Also, the touch screen features quick select buttons such as inventory, character equipment and even a bestiary list.

But, the touch screen commands can be a little cumbersome during combat as you have to double tap each command to execute a specific action. For example, we engaged several enemies during the demo and it was rather difficult to select a specific enemy we wanted to target first. We had to tap onto the "Enemy A" button to target, then tap it again to bring up our combat menu...and then tap it again to execute. So we were constantly poking holes to the DS screen as if we were playing Whack-a-Mole DS. But again, the version we played was an early E3 build so Square-Enix might tweak it. Aside from that, the combat remained fluid like its original counterpart.

Chrono Trigger DS is due out later this year. Check out the trailer below.

Makes me want to go get a DS right now.

I love Chrono Trigger and all...but I have a working SNES and this cart, so if its not a new translation or a reworking, i just can't get excited.

Why buy this again. I can play it on my SNES, and hell, I even have it on the PS1.

I guess what i can't figure out is why so many people are screaming for this. If your such a fanboy of it (and I am) why don't you already have a form of it?

A port doesn't excite me.

I don't have this game anymore, so i'm happy people still give a damn about one of the games that I love. But I do still have my Super NES.

I agree...most of the fanboys that know this game well enough to be excited already own it.

Heck I just played it through again about 8 months ago. I'm happy that a new audience will get introduced to it but I would still like to see a sequel. And don't even mention Chrono Chross to me. :-P

I'm a huge fan of the Square Enix games and I never was able to pick this one up when it originally came out for the SNES, which is rather strange. I just hope that when it does come out that it doesn't come with a $35 price tag, otherwise I'll just find it for the PSX or something like that.

To gahaz, it's not just a complete copy, there are new things added to the DS version, like a new dungeon.

wow the first good reason to buy a ds like 4 years later.

I've said this before, but it bears reiteration....

I want a direct Chrono sequel, not a re-release. Chrono MMO, anyone?

Wow this is great news for them. I wish them all the best. I saw a popular game about this on * m u l t i r a c i a l l o v e.c o m * and shared all the love with my friends.

This makes me so mad...I gave up on Nintendo so many years ago...I became a fan of the PlayStation and have kept up with it for more than 10 years. Now my all time favorite game is coming to the handheld I DON'T have...I can play this baby on the SNES and cart I have, or on my PS3 from the PSOne port.

Or if I'm REALLY pressed, I can homebrew my PSP and put the PS1 ISO on it. Why did Square have to make this exclusive?...I'm so sad...I might have to get a DS....Emphasis on MIGHT.

I'm not very excited for this yet. I love the game, but like others have said, it seems to be just a port with a few minor things added. I'm not going to pay $35 for a game I already have with a new dungeon.

I'm interested, but I'll wait for more information on the game to see if there's enough new content for me to actually buy it. :)

To Boomstick.

NO.

I think the whole idea of you attaching the acronym of MMO and my response is enough.

:] I can't wait! I wonder if there be any new content :] I love Chrono Series i hope there will be more after this :]

The reason to get excited about the port is if you're a smart fanboy that has the original, you can sell that on ebay for 60 bucks and grab the new one for 30 and double your money. :P
