The looooong awaited debut solo prject from Rage Against The Machine frontman Zack De La Rocha is finally hitting stores on July 22. But it’s not the hip hop solo album he's been working on for half a decade, it's a 5-song EP with Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore under the name One Day As a Lion.
But, hey, we’ll take what we can get, right?
The One Day As a Lion songs are titled "Wild International," "Ocean View," "Last Letter," "If You Fear Dying" and the title track. De La Rocha sings/raps and plays keyboards.
"It's a sonic reflection of the visceral tension between a picturesque fabricated cultural landscape, and the brutal socioeconomic realities it attempts to mask," the duo say in a statement.
As you’ll recall, Rage Against The Machine broke up in 2000, and reunited in 2007 for the Coachella festival, playing only occasional festival dates since then (including an Aug. 2 appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago this summer).
Since Rage’s split, De La Rocha has recorded material with DJ Shadow, Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and the Roots' ?uestlove, but none of that stuff made it to One Day As a Lion. A cut called "We Want It All" with Reznor appeared on the 2004 compilation Songs and Artists that Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11, while a track with KRS-One and Last Emperor appeared on the 1998 Rawkus hip hop compilation Lyricist Lounge, Vol. 1.
Meanwhile, Rage guitarist Tom Morello will release his second Nightwatchman solo album later this year.
