G4 Rewind Anime Style: 'The Vision of Escaflowne'

Posted by Courtney Kraft - Sunday, June 29, 2008 10:00 AM

We know there are tons of classic anime out there, but G4 Rewind Anime Style can’t go on forever. We certainly give an honorable nod to shows like Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Magic Knight Rayearth, Lupin III, and more. But for the final week, we have something very special for you...

Here in America, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so here is ours: The Vision of Escaflowne is the greatest anime of all time.

Of course, also in America, we have forums and comments sections for rattling off on how much we disagree about things. Go ahead. We’re sure you want to point out how Escaflowne has nothing on Naruto or Death Note even though you haven’t seen it. Go on...we’ll wait.

Done? Look below the cut.

The Vision of Escaflowne is a highly accessible, moving story about an average teenage girl named Hitomi Kanzaki who gets whisked away to the world of Gaea. There, she develops her latent psychic powers and discovers that her wishes will determine the fate of this land.

As beautiful as Gaea appears, it is a bloodstained world. The ancient Draconians used the power of their will to create it, but that power came at the cost of their own destruction. Now Van Fanel, one of the last Draconians, must lead his devastated homeland out of strife with the help of a mysterious guymalef (mecha) named Escaflowne. Van has few trustworthy allies, but they’re strong. And now, he has Hitomi and her powers by his side.

Is it as easy as it sounds? Nope. That would be boring. Van’s older brother Folken is fighting for the other side, the technology-driven Zaibach Empire. Gotta love an underdog.

The main theme of this series is about the power of will. Are we bound by destiny, or do we forge our own? Is it possible to change destiny through technology? Does fate even exist?

Escaflowne is an evocative, epic adventure that anyone can enjoy. This is the kind of series you show to your girlfriend/boyfriend if you want to try to get them into anime. The story is long enough to be fleshed out without dragging on, but short enough that it comes full circle while fitting all the pieces into place. It may not have the most visually stunning artwork, but the directing is well done. The animation is vivid and the editing builds tension in just the right places.

When you see the scene with the fate machine in action, you’ll know what we’re talking about. (Side note: Upon recent watching, we did notice a continuity error in that scene that occurs twice.)

The soundtrack is composed by Yoko Kanno who also did Cowboy Bebop, RahXephon, and Macross Plus to name a few. For those of you not in the anime loop, she’s the John Williams of anime, and her works in this series really do resemble the music of an epic feature film.

We don’t have much to say about the dub because we generally refuse to hear it. It’s not that it’s bad. It’s tolerable. We’d accept a million dollars to listen to it.  But why would we want to when we have a star-studded Japanese cast including Tomokazu Seki, Joji “George” Nakata, Shinichiro Miki, and Maaya Sakamoto? Actually, this was Sakamoto’s first work, so technically she wasn’t a star then....

Shut it. Keep reading.

The best part about getting into Escaflowne now is that the series is much more affordable than it used to be.  Several years ago, it would have cost you nearly $200 for eight discs, but now you can find all 26 episodes in a value pack for $40. If you see it, snatch it up.

But wait...there’s more!

There’s also Escaflowne manga and a movie. Keep in mind, both came out after the TV series. We haven’t read the manga yet (because Courtney is afraid to see a non-bishie incarnation of Allen Schezar), so we’re not going to comment on it. The movie, however, we can tell you about. The film is a stand-alone, condensed version of the story. Same basic plot, just crammed into 98 minutes. The story isn’t as gripping as the TV series because of that, but the artwork is stunning and the soundtrack is just brilliant. If you end up really liking the TV series, you should try the film as a bonus.

If you want to call yourself an anime connoisseur, then The Vision of Escaflowne is a must-see. Heck, even if you aren’t, it’ll be the best $40 you’ll ever spend.

THe soundtrack is wonderful as well. I have the tv series on disc, and I've seen the movie version as well.

Why is Evangelion crossed out?

Posted by JTHMROCKS - Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:01 AM
Evangelion is the greatest anime series of all time.

Posted by zeropilot - Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:01 AM
I myself prefer Cowboy bebop, various Gundam series (like the original, 8th MS, 0083, Zeta, Wing, Seed and Seed Destiny), Ghost in the Shell and Helsing. But I have heard good things about escaflowne

Posted by theone06 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:26 AM
what are you insinuating by crossing out Eva and why is FLCL on that list?
It has been so long since I watch the Escaflowne movie, gotta go look up the series now

To the Batcave!!!

I will have to agree that Escaflowne is one epic anime series. I am particularly fond of of how they portray the characters (especially Van and Allen) as having both a personal side and a political side. Now when is this going to appear in the schedule so I know when to watch it?

P.S.: Evangelion probably got crossed out b/c they got tired of the main character's whining after 5-6 episodes (just like everyone else).

Posted by tokyoraiderVash - Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:33 AM
escaflowne really? bebop is way better in every conceivable way. BUt its still a decent anime. For the most part older anime is better than this new crap. Narto and death note are good but they have nothing on the old days of anime glory.

Posted by sylvansorrow - Sunday, June 29, 2008 12:10 PM
I love Escaflowne, but anyone remember the absolutely HORRID fox kids adaptation of it?

Also it isn't my favorite anime, that would goto an Anime called Twelve Kingdoms in the US, but you've prolly never heard of that one :D

Posted by Jimtopia - Sunday, June 29, 2008 12:24 PM
Escaflowne was one of my favorite anime's when I was a kid!

Posted by Rajion1 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 12:33 PM
I remember the Fox Kids adaptation as well. That series failed.

As for the anime, I wouldn't call it the best in the world, but it is up there.

In my opinion, DBZ is still the best.

Posted by thereddrummer - Sunday, June 29, 2008 1:49 PM
I absolutely love Esca Flowne. it has, for the english voice over, a lot of familiar voices. Van Fenel also does Trowa Barton in Gundam Wing, along with Allen Schezar doing Zechs merquise and also Ryuk the Shinigami in Death Note. Hell, the emperor also did Rhinox from Beast Wars. I like the english dub better than the japanese one, if for no other reason than to listen to Dilandau albatou go completely crazy calling after Jajuka!

Posted by Dr_Daddy - Sunday, June 29, 2008 1:54 PM
THIS ISN'T AS GOOD AS POKEMON!!!!!!!! XD

Posted by Tmidiman - Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:15 PM
Hey get your list right:

1.Evangelion
2.Cowboy Bebop
3.Tri-gun
4.Gunsmith Cats
5.Escaflowne
6.Blue Seed
7.Ramen 1/2
8.Golden Boy
9.RahXephon
10.Gantz
11.Super Milk Chan
12.Burn-up W

Escaflowne is like alot more by females, because it's all about emotion and feelings. That makes much of the dialog implied and empty, but the overall story and Yoko Kanno's music bring it to the top. the same goes for RahXephon, but it at least has better dialog.

Posted by Tmidiman - Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:18 PM
I bet if Shingi and Rei had a "relationship" that would move it to the top of your list.

Thing is if you understood what the show was about you would know how sick of an idea that is.

Posted by bullet53 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:40 PM
so basically ive been missing out big time......

Posted by wolftheory - Sunday, June 29, 2008 2:59 PM
Black Lagoon. Nuff said

Posted by si1vergecko - Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:30 PM
I would not personally call it the greatest series of all time, but Escaflowne is a must for anyone who considers them self an anime fan. It is solid all around.

Posted by themanjay - Sunday, June 29, 2008 3:49 PM
eva is my faveorit and so far the best one i have seen ill recomend it but the kind of anime most the people like are the dumbed down kiddy ones like naruto and bleach because the plot in evangelion is actualy complicated and now i must search escaflowne.

Posted by JTHMROCKS - Sunday, June 29, 2008 4:34 PM
Could the reason Eva's not at the top of the list be it's final two episodes?

Posted by OBELIX - Sunday, June 29, 2008 4:36 PM
@ themanjay: As for Naruto, I would certainly understand people calling it "kiddy"... As for Bleach, I would have to disagree for the following reasons:
1) KON's breast obsession,
2) Ichigo's bad attitude and foulmouthery (yes, I made up a word, deal with it),
and 3) I believe a more appropriate term would be "junior high"...

Posted by OBELIX - Sunday, June 29, 2008 4:49 PM
(continued from my last post)
... Oh, and Evangelion's endings (both of them) were confusing and suckish (so I borrowed that one from ICarly; bite me), the main character was annoying, and the rest of the cast had few redeeming qualities about them, and furthermore did not endear themselves to their audience...
At least most of Naruto's cast have certain traits that make them identifiable to the people that watch the show and/or read the manga, unlike Eva and Blue Dragon (what possesses me to watch the latter is beyond my comprehension)...

Posted by codemonkeypwnz - Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:01 PM
I dont rly like Naruto lol but Death Note seems great. Idk about this escaflowne, bu I do know Cowboy Bepop is one of the best ever, and I believe full metal alchemnits deserves to be in that list but thast just me

Posted by EvangelionThree - Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:03 PM
As you can tell, I do really like Evangelion, but I agree with zeropilot on this one(at least the Gundam 8th MS and Ghost in the Shell part). Escaflowne is definately up there though. I rented one a when I was about 12 and, as a matter of fact, it was one of the first animes that I was introduced to, so it's definately worth the cash.

Posted by djowalsen - Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:13 PM
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most utterly unwatchable televisions programs I have ever seen. But I'm weird, so who knows...

Posted by SkullOne360 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 5:41 PM
I don't know about greatest anime of all time, but yes, Escaflowne IS a EPIC anime. I haven't listened to it in Japanese, but the English dubb is AWESOME, with the voice actors of Kirby Morrow, and Brian Drummond (Trowa/Zechs from Gundam Wing)sounding perfect for their roles. Everything from the way it is presented just works magically. It has a lot more depth than the crap anime of today, I'm looking at you Naruto! I am actually surprised that neither a Gundam series, Robotech, and Voltron got mentioned. It seems a lot of these newer animes are all about action and severely lacking in plot and depth in their so called "storylines."

Seen it, ;( Get with the "Ghost in the Shell"

Posted by BlueFoxHowl - Sunday, June 29, 2008 6:22 PM
Yes Escaflowne is an amazing anime, I personally would have to put it in my top 5 but to say its the best ever, I don't know. That said those of you who have seen the movie the only similarities are the characters and settings otherwise they go different directions both are very good and as it is stated in the article, now cheap!!!

Posted by RPGCrazied - Sunday, June 29, 2008 6:57 PM
uh.. why not show it then? i care not what g4 thinks of an anime.. now if you show the episodes that would be different.

Id gladly watch this over COPs/Cheaters

Posted by SkullOne360 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:03 PM
Yeah, if the anime series would have had the movie adapatations animation then damn, Escaflowne would deserve the praise G4 is giving it.

Posted by petrock12 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:05 PM
darker than black is the best anime ever. it's not dubbed, but it will be. it is the best anime ever.

@sylvansorrow i've seen twelve kingdoms and i didn't like it at all. it started too slow, the lead character yoko was annoying and cried way too much, and the show was made a lot longer than it should have been, but it did have some great characters.

Posted by petrock12 - Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:08 PM
continuation from my last comment: twelve kingdoms last episode was horrible it just recapped the previous two episodes .

i accidentally wrote the same sentence twice about darker than black

Posted by RETVirus - Sunday, June 29, 2008 7:32 PM
It's just in style to hate on Evangelion. I personally think that it is an amazing series, but that's just me... And a ton of other people I know.

I truly enjoyed Escaflowne, and I think I'm going to watch it again.

Posted by JuliousRinsteel - Sunday, June 29, 2008 8:31 PM
i was too young to remember the entire story, but i do remember that the movie almost completely f@#ed the show in the @$$. the guyamelf's ran on the pilots blood, and only two guyamelfs were in exsistence according to the movie. they ripped out all the back story of the draconians, and the artwork looked like it was drawn by someone sticking the pencil between theyre @$$cheeks and squatting over the page. i f@$%ing hated the movie. the tv show however, GENIUS!!! PERFECTION!!! thats all i can say about it :D

Posted by Markntosh - Sunday, June 29, 2008 8:39 PM
I'll stick with DBZ. Sorry!

Posted by bigmonstefan - Sunday, June 29, 2008 8:42 PM
This is a good anime to cut your teeth on. Good characters, great giant robot animation, good sound track (if not a little repetitive), and I never felt the story get too deep for it's own good.

Posted by crimean - Sunday, June 29, 2008 9:21 PM
As near as I can tell there are only three good anime series, this one, Cowboy and Lupin. And maybe Robotech(minus the singing) but I'm just diluting my point. Also, remember that this is only an opinion. I'm not saying you are wrong for liking something, just that I think you are wrong.

Posted by Teggy - Sunday, June 29, 2008 9:25 PM
Just for the record, Escaflowne is not my personal favorite anime.

Posted by patrick005 - Monday, June 30, 2008 12:08 AM
Escaflowne is a great anime series and one of my favorites. Kinda bold for you guys to say that it's the greatest anime of all time.

All the hate for Evangelion though *sigh* is to be expected. It's unfortunate though, since Eva to this day is still one of the most influential anime of all time. It's ability to use a seemingly traditional story, and turn it into a very untraditional story is just one of the things that made it so great. It took risks in making the main characters flawed and *gasp* human, that I feel it ruined the whole wish fulfillment mentality of anime otaku living vicariously through them in romanticized fashion. I still remember how a lot of us anime fans were simply blown away by Evangelion when it was first released, and I admit that it's a little disheartening to hear that anime fans of today don't have the same reaction.

Posted by TatsuyaDragon - Monday, June 30, 2008 4:03 AM
I say Evangelion rules!!! i like how eva 01 looks freaking awesome, and dbz ftw!!

Posted by TatsuyaDragon - Monday, June 30, 2008 4:04 AM

Posted by altizar - Monday, June 30, 2008 5:13 AM
Aww man, your throwing out typical popular animes. Time to drop some good more obscure ones.

1) Zero no Tsukaima
2) Fafner in the Azure
3) Bakuretsu Tenshi
4) Tsubasa Chronicles
5) Kenichi the mightiest Disciple
6) Claymore
7) Louie the Rune Warrior
8) Kiba

They're probably the best, but deffinately worth your time to track down and watch.

Posted by SkullOne360 - Monday, June 30, 2008 7:12 AM
Dude you got props from me, for throwing out Claymore. I LOVE than manga/anime.

@Tmidiman:

how in holy hell can you leave off rurouni kenshin on that "supposed" best list you have?

btw... escaflowne was absolutely amazing and I have had the series for years now... and I'm with the evangelion crowd as well... it's spectacular

"7.Ramen 1/2"
I'll have to check that one out, sounds tasty. I myself have always been partial to Ranma 1/2, but to each his own.

Posted by MasterChief3784 - Monday, June 30, 2008 8:22 AM
Escaflowne was a great series, but when they state that it's the greatest of all time, their stating an opinion and not a fact. Personally, my favorite anime series so far has been Wolf's Rain and I imagine it will take a while for another anime series to blow me away as Wolf's Rain did. Beautiful music done Yoko Kanno, a deep and compelling story, characters you grow to care about and stunning animation. Also a fan of Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ghost in the Shell and Gundam Wing. Although the list does not end there, those are my favorites of all the anime series I have seen.

Posted by yoshiarecool - Monday, June 30, 2008 8:36 AM
I haven't seen TVOE, so I can't say if its the best anime ever or that it stinks. I will say that to top Death Note in my opinion will be a really lofty goal

Posted by Icequake - Monday, June 30, 2008 9:00 AM
Robotech\Macross Saga is at the top of my list. Escaflowne doesn't even make my top 10

Posted by deline - Monday, June 30, 2008 11:23 AM
You guys and girls remeber Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot show the was cool also i hope the movie maker people make a movie about it like the transformers movie. The
Robotech\Macross Saga, dbz, reboot, Death Note, and a few other show are on my list of good.

@petrock12
Yeah the last episode is unfortunate, but I woudl like to defend it here, you see, you may not know this. But the series coincided with a series of novels that was being written and unfortunately the author of the series fell ill and was unable to continue so it ended abruptly around episode 42 or so. And yeah the main character whines and complains a lot at first, but she does grow and evolve and by the time the second arc comes around she kicks some serious ass. Specially much later during the revolution.

Posted by bo300 - Monday, June 30, 2008 1:29 PM
I seen all esclaflown episode it is about that girl you can see the future, and she is brought in an other world by Van a prince of a kingdom. In that there is a bad guy who want shape the future, he want the to control the destiny. There is also Allen a very cool with yellow hair a great swordman. Really, Esclaflown is the name of a big robot, the robot of van but it's not like other robot. Esclaflown is alive it has a heart, the same heart with his master. If ESclaflown die, Van also will die. It's a good anime but the best are: Hellsing, Naruto, Hokuto no ken, Dragon Ball Z

Props for representing Claymore, i've only seen the anime but it is absolutely mouthwatering to watch. Also props on Golden Boy, that anime is a MUST FRICKIN SEE! Also it is the one and ONLY anime that you are NEED to watch in dubs (makes it 100x funnier, trust me).

It really depends on taste, but there are also some anime's that haven't been mentioned that should be watched if you are really into anime.

-Genshiken (seasons 1 and 2)

-Gurren Lagann (EPIC! must watch, by the creators of Flcl)

-Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (pure awesomeness)

-Nodame Cantibile (depends on your taste, I loved it)

-Utawarerumono

-The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

-Mushishi (i think it's really obscure, but it is really enjoyable to watch)

-Negima! (Manga only, the animation wasn't all that great in the anime, but this one is also up to your tastes)

-The Third - Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo (I haven't watched all of it but i've really enjoyed it)

-Rental Magica

-Bamboo Blade

I'll have to check rurouni kenshin out. Hey I left off DBZ: Maji Buu too.

Lots of great anime out there, Escaflowne is not the greatest.

And let me give a shout out to Prince Planet. He gets no respect.

Posted by SkullOne360 - Monday, June 30, 2008 6:02 PM
Rurouni Kenshin is in my top 5 greatest manga of all time. The anime is good, but it comes no way near as BADASS as the manga exclusive "Jinchu" storyline was. There was so much action/drama/character development going on, I was drooling. No other manag/anime has made me feel that way.

Btw, I HIGHLY recommend Claymore to fans. It's a GREAT story. So many plot twists and turns it's getting realy good at volume 11.

One of my favorite shows ever is Outlaw Star, which I first saw on the "anime devil" channel CN when Toonami was still cool and showed Voltron, Robotech, and Thundercats (HOOOOOOOOOOOOO). It was one of the first, I guess, current animes I saw because I live in a place where anime didn't come easy (or cheap) at the time and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw and still do. There have been bigger and better anime series since then but Outlaw Star has a very special in my geeky heart.

I don't usually comment but i enjoy good anime and it kinda pisses me off that Trigun's not getting too much love from anyone here. I'm gonna check out this escaflowne but c'mon.
