A year after Google put up a 20 million dollar prize, a group of researchers in Romania are the first to set a date for an attempt at the X-Prize for lunar exploration. Yes, they're a private company and they're sending a probe to the moon.
The Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association plans to fly a hot-air balloon up to 11 miles, at which point a STABILO rocket will fire and a 92-pound rover will be shot to the moon.
If all goes according to plan, the rover will then travel 500 feet on the surface of the moon, and send video, images, and data back to Earth. Its creators will then get 20 million bucks from google.
