If you think the PlayStation 3 is expensive to consumers, you should see what it's costing Sony! The electronics giant has reportedly lost $3.32 billion on the console so far. Sony took a $2.16 billion bath in 2007 and another $1.16 billion in 2008. Sony's loss is your gain, though: The system's impressive hardware costs more to manufacture than it costs for you to buy it.
Sony warned investors that "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered."
But it's not bad news:
Sales at Sony's game division rose 26 per cent because of improved PS3 sales and lowered costs on hardware production. Sony said in May that "the profitability of the [game] segment will improve significantly due to hardware cost reductions and an enhanced line-up of software titles in the PS3 business."
