E3 Preview: Hands On With 'Warhammer Online'

Posted by Jonathan Hunt - Monday, June 23, 2008 9:00 AM

G4 recently attended a event at EA where we were allowed some Hands On time with some of the most anticipated games EA would be announcing or showing off at E3. Some of them, we can't talk about yet. Others are free and clear and this is just one of several posts today, chronicling some the games we were able to demo at EA's E3 2008 preview. Here, we have the highly anticipated MMO, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

Following the success of World of Warcraft and the recently released Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, we will soon see the release of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. This new MMO promises to remove all the "boring stuff" from more traditional MMO's and will allow the player more freedom to do what everybody really wants to do, which is beat the crap out of other players in online.

On the more interesting aspects on Warhammer Online which really set it apart from MMO's that we've played was the example of the Public Quest. Unlike other MMO's where quests are given to you as a guild or as a sole player and then you enlist help, Public Quests will spring up to anyone and everyone in a certain region. They are location bound. That could mean that suddenlly, everyone in a single area will find the region under attack and they must unite in order prevent everyone from being killed.

While some might look down at this, G4 was really impressed on how this feature could entice player to co-operate in a way never seen in another MMO. This feature was the star of the Warhammer exhibit at the EA event, and we have to say, Public Quests alone make Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning an intriguing title and a game that we look forward to sinking our teeth into when it comes out this fall.

Also, if you want more on Warhammer Online, check out X-Play's Hands-On with the game's Executive Producer and Creative Director.

If that's not enough, here's more of Morgan with Warhammer's Paul Barnett and Jeff Hickman in a Web Exclusive.

Sounds cool. Can't wait to try it my-self.

I can't wait for WAR. X-play should have given them more time, they completely forgot about the Tome of Knowledge, one unique feature that has certainly piqued my interest in WAR. hopefully it can keep it once it's out.

I'll believe it when I sees it. The very nature of MMO is such that it requires the "boring" stuff, otherwise it would be an online action game.

There will be fetch quests. There will be slow laborious travel. There will be tedium.

*begging to be proven wrong... please be wrong!*

I think there's a fair chance you'll be wrong. Warhammer is inherently filled to the brim with killing maiming and burning. There's not actually a hell of a lot of room for boring stuff. Look at it this way: you're a soldier in one army or another and soldiers don't tend to act as couriers. Likely you'll be on some mission to kill or destroy _____ at any given time.

"you're a soldier in one army or another and soldiers don't tend to act as couriers"

Actually, soldiers spend much of their time doing mundane stuff, like training and cleaning things. You'd probably be surprised at how many boring tasks soldiers have to accomplish daily. Every action requires numerous reports, plans, supply runs, etc...

Not during WAR! I mean, sure, there are people who do all that crap, but imagine yourself a footsoldier in a batallion fighing on the battlefron - all you have is a phone, your gear, your buddies, and an enemy to annihilate!
Because 'WAR is everywhere'
