Atari Sues Over Review?

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Friday, June 20, 2008 3:50 PM

Claiming that German website 4Players reviewed a pirated or incomplete version of Alone in the Dark, Atari has reportedly filed a lawsuit.

Atari has apparently claimed that the date of 4Players review--which gave the 360 version of the survival-horror title 68%--implies it came from an illicit or incomplete copy of Alone in the Dark. They are asking for an undisclosed amount of compensation. 4Players says they acquired the game through a retail connection.

We wonder how a relatively solid review of a game (68% is hardly a bomb) could be said to affect anything enough to warrant a lawsuit, but we're really looking forward to this game, either way!

The PC, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii editions of Alone in the Dark hits North American retailers on June 24. A PlayStation 3 version is expected this fall.

This is Phil Harrison's first real challenge since taking over Atari. Its an understandable argument, but in the post-Kane & Linch days, this is an INCREDIBLY risky tactic that in the long run hurt them than help them out.

Have confidence in your game and aim for high reviews from other outlets, not direct all the attention on a negative one and create a PR nightmare for the game even before its release!

hahaha the dumb ps3 stays behind again, they shouldnt even release a ps3 version because of its 256-256 RAM causing alot of problems, res problems, AI problems, etc. the ps3 doesnt deserve these kind of games for its major flaws

@ABYSSAL
you are one of the dumbest people i've ever seen post here . aside from a select few people...

seeing the game got a 68% why would we want a crap game anyway? its not like you honestly are going to get this game ABYSSAL

@ABYSSAL

I own a 360, and even I think you're an idiot.

Abyssal's funny in that he owns neither a 360, Wii, or PS3. He just trolls around here because he's still stuck waiting for new titles to hit for PS1...the last system he was able to afford.

Posted by Druthekilla - Friday, June 20, 2008 6:55 PM
Abyssal is right in that the PS3 sucks, and because of that, he's a god damned god compared to you Sony faqbots.

Posted by ABYSSAL - Friday, June 20, 2008 7:42 PM
i know im right druthekilla i would punch and kick the crap out of these morons if i saw them in person im a 6 year martial artist, let them stay stuck with a system that cant even run unreal engine 3 right, they have to wait till the fall to play a game were going to get in 4 days....

Neither of you two girls would, or could, do anything to anyone. You big bad internet tough guys.

Posted by crazykila93 - Friday, June 20, 2008 8:35 PM
Its only cause atari's broke.

The Ps3 has been outselling the 360 for months. A couple fanboys is not going to change the fact the public want the Ps3 over the 360 just as the people want the Wii over all.

Atari is pretty much screwed right now. They'll do whatever they can to try and bring in a little extra revenue.

And abyssal, no serious martial artist would ever say "ill punch and kick the crap out of you" to anyone much less somebody on the internet because they have a different opinion than you. I hope you started your "martial arts" when you were born because you're acting like you're six.

Posted by kikook - Friday, June 20, 2008 10:25 PM
@PyreFlame
True and to abyssal thing you said. Doesnt matter if your a martial arts star it doesnt mean that he can kick are ass's. Ive seen many suppostly great people that knew martial arts get their ass's kicked by people that didnt know a lick of fighting techniques. Its all for show in a real fight you wont get a kick in. the only fighting style thats good in a fight is Judo.

Is 'emaddam' cloning his/her self now, or is he/she/it just changing screen names every couple months?

Well, abyssal? Hello? I'm looking at you.
How good did it make you feel when you told us all that you're a six-year martial artist? Kick? Punch? It's all in your mind.

The thing about percent ratings is that the same number can mean different things. From one reviewer, a 50% might mean it's half a fail, while the same score from another reviewer might mean it's an F and a complete or near-complete fail. Most people tend to see 68% as low, I think, especially with the high standards for a big title like Alone In The Dark.

I'm curious as to how SJohnson thinks a 68% is a relatively strong score. Even in school a 68 is still a D rating...how is something barely above a total failure relatively strong?

Getting anything lower than a 70%, 7/10, 3/5 is essentially the kiss of death for a game, but I guess that's why the Feed is the one posting up articles while XPlay handles the game reviewing.

Hey, come on guys, if anyone has seen Atari stock, if you've got nothing, it can't hurt to go for everything.

What school do you go to, Tasomo? 69 (tehe) is an F in my school

Posted by Tasomo - Sunday, June 22, 2008 12:38 AM
The university system ranks anything below 60 an F, 60-69 a D, 70-79 a C, 80-89 a B, and 90-100 an A.

This is pretty much universal among American universities. High school and below run on the old 0-64 = F, 65-74 a D, et cetera.

Has anyone here even looked at the videos for this game, it looks like crap. What is the game trying to be a FPS, 3rd person shooter, a driving game. I know it falls under horror type, but I wonder if enough time was spent on any of it to make it work. Also the fire elements look pretty weak, I mean one of the hardest things to predict is the path of fire, yet in one video I saw fire sticking to a chair like it was bubble gum. I just get the feeling that this was a bad idea from the start, almost like a movie spin off games, great for those who are a fan, but crappy for everyone else.

the problem with reviewing games is that there is no real set standard. some game reviewers are Journalists, some are game enthusiasts/programmers, and some are just plain fans. Video Games are not enough of an excepted medium to have a true training to analyzes and critic the quality of a game. where as with film critics they either have a degree or masters in the field...or have taken Film Criticism classes at some point in there lives. anyone can learn to critique film if educated in it...but not so with Video games at this point in time. at this point in time Games are stuck in the void of not having separation between being good or liked. Reviewers either like the game personally or don't. not saying if industry wise it is good or not. hopefully this will change soon as games become more excepted. many universities are adding game design and study as a form of media study.

If there is a PS2 version of the game, why would you need to port it into a PS3 version?
