Apple announced today that they have reached the 5 billion songs sold watermark, a huge achievement considering it has only been providing the service since April 28, 2003.

The MP3 juggernaut has surpassed Wal-Mart as the nation's leading music provider and according to NPD Group, sales at competitors like AmazonMP3 are at only a tenth of the iTunes volume.

And this doesn't even include the numerous podcast or movie sales and rentals that iTunes is starting to build up, cutting into Netflix and storefront rental chain markets. More dominance is on the way, wethinks.
