Sessler 1, Bigots 0

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, June 16, 2008 3:39 PM

If you missed last week's "Sessler's Soapbox," you missed Sess calling out the legions of Xbox Live racists, bigots, homo-phobes and other mouth-breathers that make gaming crappier for all the normal people.

Check it out:

Sessler challenged the loudmouths to contact us to provide an explanation for their actions. While his post elicited a lot of responses--nearly unanimously in the "right on, Sess!" camp--a few posters identified themselves as people who fling sexists and racist language around on Live.

We emailed each Xbox Live jerk to try and set up an interview. Only one person responded to our emails, and he didn't have the sack to talk to us. So, in a piece of hardly surprising news, it turns out that players who hurl the N-Word and slur people's sexuality are actually cowards.

"It doesn't surprise me," Sessler said. "They know what they're doing is inappropriate, and may not even reflect how they feel in real life. Real-life racists usually keep that kind of talk to their own kind, so what's shocking about this isn't what's being said, but the fact that it's put out there in public the way it is. You'd be pretty surprised to find a KKK rally, but racists on Xbox are an every day thing."

So apparently, the prospect of speaking to another human being on the phone is too scary for the tough guys who grief Xbox Live. But we get why. We understand that a discussion with a semi-intelligent person who disagrees with you will likely make you look like idiot (after all, if you had any other way of making people listen to you, you wouldn't be spamming the N-Word over Xbox, right?), so we'll meet you on your turf. Make it nice and easy on you.

G4 would like to propose a Bigots Vs. G4 Halo 3 match. Send us an email if you use racist and/or sexist language on Live, and we'll put you on a team, then, we'll pit you against G4's group. You can call us any names you want.

If you're down, shoot an email, and we'll hook it up and settle the matter like geeks, eh?

What kind of challenge is that suppose to be? Nothing would change. If G4 wins then they will just get bombarded with inapproiate comments, and if the f#%kholes win then they will throw out even more ruthless comments.

But if this happens please record it.

Posted by Gearhead3000 - Monday, June 16, 2008 3:55 PM
can I be on the G4 team to please express my anger to the @wholes who continue to annoy me, and when I ask if they can keep it down a little, very politley, they hurl the homophobic, and racial slur words at me.

Posted by Genesis19 - Monday, June 16, 2008 3:57 PM
Agreed, however, most of the time, those that spout off think they're Gods on Halo or CoD 4, and it'd be nice to see them shut up for once. I'd rather deal with the satisfaction of making them use bad language and run with a -7 kill/death ratio on the carnage report than think they are better and keep that kind of stuff going.

Posted by slimmer - Monday, June 16, 2008 3:58 PM
Who are the majority 360 owners ? white middle to upper class males I would think.
I've gotten into arguments on Xbox live forums with some true neo-cons.

Posted by slimmer - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:00 PM
Neo-cons = Bigots.

Posted by TheRufio - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:02 PM
This is completely pointless. What are you trying prove Adam? We all know that xbox live is riddled with gamers who like to drop racists remarks, and playing Halo 3 isn't going to change it. The only thing we can do is mute them and file a complaint. As long as issues such as racism exits in the world it will continue to translate in some form or fashion into different outlets such as xbox live.

Posted by sjohnson - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:03 PM
It's my challenge, more than Adam's, and no one is trying to prove anything.

Posted by TheRufio - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:13 PM
I don't play Halo 3, but if you wanted to play Gears of War then I challenge. I don't care if I am on a team with racists it seems happens all the time anyway. I just want to play against the G4 staff.

Posted by Itachi12 - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:20 PM
Who exactly will be on the G4 team? Anybody from MLG like Tsquare? Or will it be Mr Sark, Adam, and people from The Feed?

Posted by Narocue - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:20 PM
I really think it is a stupid thing to try and stop. IF you dont like the siht talking you can mute them, or just quit playing online games ... get "friends" (aka people who can put up with you for certain periods of time) and play locally. If you dont have any friends, then quit playing video games for a day and make some. But dont bitch about something you have absolutly no control over. And for that matter, their only words ... its not like people are breaking your windows and burning crosses in your front yard. I may have come accross like a racist a-hole in the last forum about this, but I can assure I am not (I'm just a tasteless dick who was trying to get a laugh :) ). But I seriously am sick of listening to people bitch and moan about getting called a f@9 in a video game. Get over it, and grow some hair on your sack.

Posted by Drunkenjunk - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:24 PM
Seriously, I really don't like the british and talk a lots of trash to them on live.I'll step up and play on the bigot team if that counts.

thanks again for bringing up this topic, I appreciated it finally getting attention

Posted by HedgehogEmoness - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:39 PM
I don't get you people. I can't believe that most of you are saying: "Why stop it?" ummmm mabye so people stop being racist idiots and making rude nasty comments to people they don't even know. If that is the way people act in this society then I want no part of it. why are people even still using these words? They shouldn't even be said.

I totally agree with you Adam. I'm very happy to see a sesslers soapbox about this matter.

Posted by aboruch23 - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:39 PM
You guys are completely missing the point. Sjohnson's challenge was for any person who uses racist and homophobic remarks on xbox live to stand up and justify their behavior in an interview. It has nothing to do with playing them at video games, it is more about trying to get racist cowards to get out from under the cover of anonymous insults and say what they say on xbox live in front of the public as a whole. The challenge is for any one of the jackasses on xbox live to step up and justify their comments in a public interview on G4. Basically, what Sjohnson is trying to prove is that there wouldn't be racist and homophobic comments on on xbox live if there was no anonymity because they are all a bunch of cowards who wouldn't man up and claim responsibility for their actions/words. Either that or they would get grounded if their mommies and daddies heard them talk like that. He is just making his point in a more subtle manner that obviously got lost in translation.

Posted by CDAT1AD - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:42 PM
First of all lets not bring politics into this. Obama has NO place in gaming discussions. I realize that most of G4's staff is a certian political ilk, but lets not get preachy here.

That aside, while I agree with Adam that its just gotten sad, thats all it is. Words are just that, and I for one am sick of the PC police. Herein America we have this first amendment thing that ALLOWS people to be racist aholes and douchebags. It's a fact of life.

That being said, its what the mute option is for pure and simple. Also its what the report function exsists for and I use mine constantly.

@aboruch23

Amen!

Posted by aboruch23 - Monday, June 16, 2008 4:58 PM
CDAT1AD who brought up politics or Obama? And yes, here in the US we are protected by the 1st Amendment and that allows a lot of people to say a lot of different things. I don't think there should be censorship in a lot of different forums. Places on the internet, like this xbox and this forum, however, are different because it allows for persons to exploit the fact that posts or comments can be made anonymously to make statements they do not have the courage to make if they had to take responsibility and face the repercussions of their actions. Granted, that does not mean that there opinions should be censored, it does , however, mean that those persons are a bunch of cowards. Plus, given the fact that xbox live is owned by a private organization with a user agreement required before one can participate, they can censor whatever they want without regard to first amendment protections.

"If that is the way people act in this society then I want no part of it."

Then its as easy as that ... turn the f#$%ing video game off if it causes that much unrest in your life.

I am not racist, but I am getting sick of 2% of the population makeing 99% of the decisions in this country. The whole damn country bends to will of all minorities ... Pretty soon they'll just take away the headsets, and Grand Theft Auto, and we'll be playing Mario for the next 20 years.

Posted by Scornbread - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:06 PM
Most racists on xbox live hide behind the security that they know the other person is miles away. The same racists won't say it in front the same person face2face. So many ppl I used to want to meet up with in order to put them into their place (know military police korean self defense. Offers no mercy and very flexible for agile ppl. Also excels in snapping the opponents joints. I'm not even asian. I just put divide and conquer aside). Racism is what's destroying our country in the first place. Go to an airport and ask them. Give me a ticket to the country that hates us the least. They'll probably tell you, Just take a pick, they all hate us. Too bad that these same kids are our future. If it keeps up, there won't be a future for our nation. Hell were so close to WWIII because of this sort. I study politics allot, and not just the english kind (multilingual). so many nations are so pissed at us that their considering to join forces and take us out in one sweep.

I am so glad that someone finally said something about this. I noticed it alot when I was playing and it was really surpising and offenseive and was one of the reasons that i didnt renew my live membership but i am glad that someone stood up and finnally said something about it. more power to ya adam.

Hey, just get some pro gamers on the G4 team to make sure that the losers get beat bad.

Posted by TheRufio - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:11 PM
Here is a simple solution borrowed from Jay and Silent Bob. We just fly across the globe and confront the people who make crude comments over Xbox Live. Then we kick their ass. It's that simple.

(Don't take this seriously, just a joke to lighten the tension)

Posted by SuperMonkey360 - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:12 PM
Yeah I'm pretty sure Adam knows that they still have their anonymity, he's just checking if any of them have the balls to actually see if they're all tough behind their headset inside their house and little sissy's if something actually happened in real life. I think Sessler has a point, I hate being called "gay" or something harsher because, if I was : so what?

lol, you end comment was genuinely funny. Yes minorities make most of the decisions in this country (minorities of the rich white top 1% type)
ok I'm over that but good post nonetheless.

Posted by adversary1999 - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:52 PM
I think this should eventually be covered on air in correlation with the story about the girl who committed suicide because of the myspace thing.
Yeah, there are some first amendment issues here but there are human decency issues that are part of our unwritten laws. There are people in this country that want to change people's minds about prejudice and tolerance so this is a good issue to tackle. As far as politics, as Americans we have to ask ourselves, "what kind of America do I want to live in?" Do we want a free America where we have the liberty to be decent to one another or do we want problems lie this to eventually become noticed by the government and then they take away our freedoms. Lets just settle this as civil people who are mature enough to think for ourselves.

Posted by adversary1999 - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:53 PM
sigh-
The gaming community is now made up of almost every demographic. Also many gamers who are adults just want to have fun (we grew up with this stuff). So why piss off people who can vote, or protest and effect a simple social, recreational activity?
-sigh-

So anybody under the age of 18 and read all of this post. Please think about those things. You live in this country too.

Posted by DuvalAK47 - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:58 PM
I've grown tired of getting on xbox live, because if i am playing an FPS of any type and just doing an open matchmaking, right when i get in i only hear the constant chatter of stupid remarks, be it racial slurs or things putting down gay people, to whatever else you can think of.

People abusing internet anonymity is really sad. Worst of it is a lot of adults (18+) still get on xbox just to talk crap for no reason, its like they are just mad at themselves irl and cant admit it so it makes them feel better. People need to grow up and start acting their age and respecting other people. Parents need to learn to watch and discipline their kids a lot more. We dont need to hear all this racist crap, adam is right, its disgusting.

Posted by Ulrichgaming - Monday, June 16, 2008 5:59 PM
this isn't hard to fix.... all that has to happen is MS hires some people to listen to game matches... and pull out the ban stick on everyone that does it.... you know be nice and send out a memo that pops up on your screen when you log in that you have to confirm you read... and then if you are caught in game you are ban.... I bet it cleans up really fast... and for those free speech idiots it's MS property they can ban your ass for any reason.

no worries though MS doesn't have the balls to do this.... might hurt their hardcore cred...

An interesting way to call out the big mouths G4. If they're not willing to do the 1on1 interview, maybe bunch'n a few up over a game of Halo will get them to open up some you're think'n?

Either way, no, the results don't surprise me either. People who slam others in such inappropriate ways are usually people who are very insecure with themselves for some reason or another.

Posted by demonlord2007 - Monday, June 16, 2008 6:14 PM
I agree with adam on this one. I have had times online on Xbox live in which a person who is better than me goes and try to take me down before a match begins with these words. I play to have fun and find new people to talk to not be insult and told to not play online with a game the other thinks they are so great at. Go grow up and act with respect when online.

Posted by mgoblue269 - Monday, June 16, 2008 6:16 PM
Dude if were going to pay for online play we should be able to do what ever the hell we want. Sure some are racsit and sexist. I mean if we did watch what we said online games would be so boring. I pay for my online gamin and im going to say anything that going to pop in my head. If i call some one a %^$ then mostly likely im pissed. As are alot of people. In the xbox community alot of people understand the lingo and yeah their is alot of racism as well in xbox live. That's how we are. Most people on xbox live are teens or young teens and to be honest we and I don't give a @!#$ what people think of me calling them a %^&get or a jew. That is all. Good day.

BTW Sessler i will do an interview with you if you do contact me so i can futher explained myslef and some of the other as**oles on xbox live.

I stopped playing the original xbox live for this exact reason. It's really great when your learning about something like the first xbox live
and the voice is coming of the speakers, and someone starts saying anything off the top of their heads. This is a perfect statement for some politician to start up the saying that videogames are evil. I would just like to thanks to the dick wads that made xbox live a crappy place. Also doesn't that mean if nasty language is used in the game it has to have an M rating, so wouldn't that mean all online games are M rated?

i agree with you morally and beleive how you express angst against people who don't understand other peoples cultures but the plain point is that.............. you cannot change peoples opinion on a simple speech . they beleive in ideals which they want to beleive in. I constantly run into people who call me racial slurrs which im ok with because i laugh at them because i ask them what they are then they say "im an american" i laugh louder because they are not native american then i ask "are you really sure cause if there people like you in america then america itself is courrupt" then he goes on and on and they always use the n word. i laugh more and more cause if you get mad at racist slurs they grow to be more powerful and hurt more when you hear them. so i do not let them get to me. (who ever wants to call me a WUSSY go ahead i dont care )

So all white middle class whites are now neo-cons? Choose your style of writing carefully.

Posted by FLYmeatwad - Monday, June 16, 2008 7:51 PM
First of all, and I felt this way when this premiered on Wednesday, there was no need to mention Obama. It took away a lot of the meaning behind the soapbox when Sessler drug him into the argument. Adam's use of Obama during the video was uncalled for and further reinforced the idea that the white man simply parades him around as a sign that we are cleansed of racism.

Posted by FLYmeatwad - Monday, June 16, 2008 7:53 PM
Continuing on, I watched this last week, and I feel what Adam is saying. I've played with people who are openly rascist, and when I bring it to their attention they just respond with, "What are you a [insert group here] lover?" It does take a lot of the enjoyment out of the game. As such, I admit to using terms of homosexual slander when I get angry. I don't do it constantly, but I do on occasion. When I say something like that, it's just because it's easy. I use homosexual slurs in the same manner in real life, but I don't use them to specifically demean the group of people. I use it in the same sense as I use the F word or the S word. I've honestly found that the only group of people that are worth hating are my own, white people. However, coming to that brand is where the problem, and the unavoidable problem at that, starts.

Posted by LOAGEEKS - Monday, June 16, 2008 7:56 PM
Sessler, Play on PSN, most folks don't even have headsets on it, even on COD4 and GTA4 the most notorious games.

Posted by FLYmeatwad - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:00 PM
We live in a society based on hierarchies. Any individual is constantly seeking a way to feel better about himself. From a visual level, the easiest way to identify a difference is by an individual's skin color. Since one identifies himself as white, and he naturally wants to believe that he's the center of the world, everyone that doesn't look white is automatically inferior. That's where the rascist terms come from. Let's transfer that to Xbox Live where you generally can't see the other person. The common person's need to feel superior, paired with the supposed escapism video games provide, makes the transition seamlessly, and since that individual, I would argue, is going in with an 'I'm the best' attitude he simply takes the real world groups he percieves as inferior and projects them upon everyone else. If the majority of XBL players were wealthy, we'd be more plagued by remarks about one's economic status.

Posted by FLYmeatwad - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:01 PM
Still, when it comes down to it, the words are meaningless. That's where Adam is 100% correct, most people, like the kid, don't know what the words mean. But the idea that Adam, or even his society, know what they mean is just as foreign. Let's assume that child used the N word. To Adam the word clearly means black people and correlates with racism, but to the child the word may simply mean 'stupid' or 'bad.'

Posted by FLYmeatwad - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:03 PM
I'm not saying this attitude is correct, but that's because I fall in line with Adam's thought, that associating these groups of people, or even seeing Africans as a group of people rather than simple a people, with these ideas is wrong. Words only mean as much as the individual makes them mean. The obvious counter argument is that a match will still burn down a house even if one thinks fire is cold, but my language politics do directly oppose that line of thinking. However, I'd also strongly defend that first amendment argument that Adam so quickly dismissed, so I'm content to agree to disagree with some of his points and try to rectify the problem of racism the only way that will logically work, on an individual level.

FLYmeatwad is my gamertag, by the by.

I say "homophobic" remarks when I'm playing, and everyone here who says that its "horrible" and "makes playing xbox live no longer fun" needs to re-evaluate their position. Your going to tell me you have never said "homophobic" things to your friends or someone who pissed you off? Please, spare me. Its all part of trash talk. Now I dont agree with the racist remarks, but get off your high horses and stop kissing Adams butt. You act like hes a saint because he called someone out on saying gay remarks. So if you wanna blast me, go for it. I'll play on the team. And I'll enjoy myself. You people need to learn the difference between just having fun, and being deadly serious. And if you morons think that every person on xbox live who says a gay remark is going to go out on the street for a "gay witch hunt", then you people really have problems.

Posted by jkd73 - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:06 PM
You know why I say "homophobic" remarks? Cause it annoys idiots like you. I get a reaction out of you. And it pleases me while I shoot you in your virtual head. I dont say it because I believe your actually gay and that I'm saying it to hurt your feelings. It's juist trash talk. Grow up and learn ignore it if it makes you that mad. Dont jump on Adams "Stop Gay Remarks" bandwagon. Just cause you say gay remarks does not make you a terrible person who is going to end up in hell. Think for yourselves people. Personally, I find this to be very sad when people are reduced to spouting racist remarks while playing a game. On a freakin' game!? Even as we reach the technological pinnacle of ingenuity, we as humans are devolving into monkeys (or worse). I don't know why people bring race into it; nobody really is pure anything. All we have in common is that we're human beings (in body; the mind is something to be desired...)

Oh and to the people who say that the free speech doesnt apply here because MS owns the network. Guess what? Im paying for it. The minute that MS makes xbox live free then they can banhammer anyone they want.

its not like -"oh I killed you there budy"
-"oh geez, you did kill me... im bad..."
-"you ok? wana talk about it?"
NO! WTF!?!

Its more like -"yeah, Bitch, I owned your ass!"
-"aahhh SHIET! Ima get your ass man! whatch yourself."
-"try dumbass, you suck more then the girl on the corner!"

if anybody has a problem, its probably because your a freaking noob and cant win shiet.

Adam you hit the nail on the head. This is exactly why I do not play online games, especially with microphones on. Its just sickening listening to people curse at-demoralize.. whatever. People we are here to have fun. But yeah, this is pretty much why I stay far away from the online arena for the most part.

Ill pretend to be racist if I can get interviewed by Kristin or Olivia

Posted by mb24 - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:24 PM
is it just me or is this entire thing really dumb for people who are trying to get the general populace on our side? they see an interview with a bunch of racists on xbox live and suddenly everyone thinks gamers are nazi-coward-fascist-dicks-etc- etc i know you guys are trying to clean this stuff up but i doubt youll be able to stop everyone from cursing online without a shock collar

Posted by Byasharingan - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:37 PM
As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with mb24; just a few rabblerousers will not change the way people interact in online games. But that doesn't mean that it's not an issue that should be ignored.

I think this is all thanks to the degeneration of the mind. People cant seem to hold there Tongue anymore. Its more or less the lack of a inner thought process. People just vomit words out, Not really realizing what they are saying. More importantly they don't know who they are saying it too.

I can guarantee that the bigots on live are compensating for something they lack, Be it a brain or an essential piece of equipment for reproduction.

If pepole gave them self 4 seconds to think before they speak, the whole planet would be in better condition.

And to the pepole out there who think that what I just said/typed was a attempted at sounding smart, its not. This is how normal pepole talk.

LIKE WITH BIG WORDS LIKE ESSENTIAL AND DEGENERATION!!1!11

the reason noone will ever step forward and show their face is because they don't want their family/girlfriends/co-workers/ bosses and the like to know that they're homophobic sexist racist fools. unluckily on the INTARWEBS everyone can remain anonomous. So these people will go on leading their second life where they can fling around such hate speech without any consequences. i bet these bigots wouldn't even show their face via stikcam or even a simple JPEG. so proceed in the challenge Sessler and G4 camp maybe eventually some /b/tards will respond.

Posted by Markntosh - Monday, June 16, 2008 8:54 PM
Honestly, this was a waste of time. I will be highly surprised if anyone shows up. Bigots won't admit they're bigots. And if you tell them to shut up (and they're smart) they'll throw at you more bad language and the whole 1st admendment peice of crap again. Man I hate when that was is used.

Posted by Markntosh - Monday, June 16, 2008 9:00 PM
All the bigots out there know they're being @$$holes, and they know someone will be mad at them for being a bigot. So they'll pretend they never did anything to be a bigot. I heard there was this one kid. He was a perfect kid. Good grades, good attitude, good friends. He was basically Mr. Perfect. So what happened was his parents put a microphone in his room to see what he was doing online. They found him using all sorts of language and being a total bigot. I don't know what happened to him, but I'm going quote that Chinese dude.

"I think... not killed"

Posted by klumpyiredness - Monday, June 16, 2008 9:02 PM
i agree with mr. sessler when ever i go on live the onslaught of racist and homophobic remarks fly at me like a ton of bricks. i become offended that this language still is so commonly used and begin arguing. the worst incident occurred when i was called an endless stream of racist remarks by a kid that was 10. i proceeded to argue with the d-bag but i realize no one can argue with them without offending someone.

Adam man I'm so disapointed, I have watched your show for over six years now I believe and I 'm just so suprised to see you get political... So here goes, I use racial slurs and say words that are disrespectful to homosexuals from time to time. This is of course a very natural and very common practice among many young males. I am not uneducated and do hate these other people, it's just a good insult to use sometimes. Now I am 20 years old and would never use this kind of language in the workplace or in class, but at home around my friends, I have the right to use that language. That is I believe what X-Box live sort of simulates, playing online with friends or people that share a common interest. GAMES. Not politics or the political correctness of the liberal elites on the west coast.

Posted by sunlitlordraul - Monday, June 16, 2008 9:26 PM
I can understand that someone might be offended by that language but you must grow some tough skin. I wish that people would just let well enough alone. I do not think children should use that sort of language but I also do not think they should use other pieces of foul language either. Of course most people would not like for you to put them on your show and call them a homophobic/racist that is out of touch with reality. They might have careers or jobs hopefully and would not like to be seen as some socially taboo person who is branded a racist/ which is one of the worst things that someone can be branded these days.

If you DO do this match, make sure to record it, it sounds like it would be entertaining.

Posted by sunlitlordraul - Monday, June 16, 2008 9:29 PM
One last thing..... lay off the Capcom for resident evil 5 they are making a game that should be good, and they do not need a bunch of white liberals coast telling them that Africans might be offended by a game that is set in Africa. You talk about free speech and creating a new medium of art and expressions in games and yet you aren't mature enough to have a game set in Africa that is a horror game. Adam I believe that most people on xboxlive are imature, I would agree with you on that, but you are just as imature as they are. Sticks and Stones may break my bones but words will never hut me.......PS I will still watch the show because I believe you are a very talented person/ just think about censorship and all the bs you guys in the industry talk about with the new form of art So please grow up Adam....

I actually talk trash over XBL, and I say some of the most horrendous words ever existed. I am not afraid to admit it. I'd love it if the G4 crew actually contact ME! I have also sent an email to the webmaster, but I hope they don't think I am trying to play a match with them.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to play. However, I only play Call of Duty 4 over XBL.

Posted by Markntosh - Monday, June 16, 2008 9:38 PM
@JavierB88

I don't find that offensive. I find racist and idiotic comments offensive. I still don't like you using curse words, though

Posted by dojita16 - Monday, June 16, 2008 10:05 PM
people don't know where to draw the line. personally im fine with people cursing, idiotic racist and homophobic comments are not appreciated, and those people have either never been in that position or feel like someone is trying to enchroach on they're freedoms, or both, but it should be done for the good of the people. especially on XBL. i mute everyone, but i feel after paying for xbox live i shouldn't have to mute everyone, i should be able to enjoy conversations that arent littered with retards and racists. but that's just me.

Scornbread the world isn't ready for your justice.

Posted by avalondismay - Monday, June 16, 2008 10:39 PM
I agree sort of. Young kids playing m rated games? they are bigots? no monitoring?. Epic bad parenting failure trifecta.
Immaturity does ruins a good game session.
I can remember a time when team leaders and clan leaders kicked off people that said crap like that and I'm 25. Gotta fire that up again i say!.
Having said that, eliminating the problem might be out of the question. Tough skin or a mute button maybe the only solution. But lets face it...they mouth off because they suck!.
My talking got philosophical on halo 2 with my boomstick. no slurs, no bigotry, no jive.
Just Dead Bodies.

Posted by signsofthetimes - Monday, June 16, 2008 10:43 PM
The biggest problem with this whole conversation is that it leads to censorship. I understand what your intentions are Adam, but what it comes down to is the fact that the human condition in combination with competition and annonymity leads to what we all experience on XBL. Ultimately, if this well intentioned pursuit is brought to fruition what will happen is censorship in one form or another and that is not worth it. So can we just leave this conversation with the understanding that individuals have choices and that perception is reality.

I just think we all need to start booting these people from these matches if they continue to be inconsiderate idiots. I'm not a liberal, i'm not all into being P.C. (actually hate political correctness and think it's overboard and ridiculous), I just think we need to take a stand against things like this. you can insult and say things but don't bring things like that into the gameplay. Gaming should be challenging, competitive, fun, inclusive, not a place for people to belittle and use extremely offensive language.
Just have fun, don't need to be too serious, it's not life and death and if you want to be shocking then be nice for once. People won't expect it.

Posted by HappyReject - Tuesday, June 17, 2008 12:28 AM
Adam i appreciate that you brought this topic up from reading a few of the other comments posted here i can see that we as gamers have a major problem facing us. the reason worthless bigots say racist and homophobic things on not just xbox live but any online game is because they don't have to say it to someones face. I'm willing to bet that if these bigots had too say to someones face that they wouldn't. they are cowards who use internet gaming worlds to spread ignorance.

Posted by Ieyke - Tuesday, June 17, 2008 12:30 AM
Adam:
Common sense, decency and courtesy are going out the window faster and faster every day. You've put your foot down on the part you influence to challenge the degeneration where you can. For that I applaud you.

Perhaps if there were more Sesslers in the media and less Lohans and Hiltons the USA would get back to a state of respectability that we used to have.

What really intrigues me is that this phenomenon is almost exclusive to XBL. As a primarily PC gamer I almost never run across bigots with the maturity of a 10 year old. Rather we can frag each other for days on end on COD4 or TF2 or BF2142 and mostly we just gain respect for the skill of our opponents rather than talking trash at them.

@ sunlitlordraul

Just because its a common practice doesn't make it any more acceptable. Burning jews was a common practice for the nazi party does that justify it?
