Metallica Vs. Internet: Round 2

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:32 AM

This Metallica band.. they don't seem to understand the internet very well.

As you all (probably) know, in the heyday of Napster, the long-haired guitar fiddlers of Metallica took issue with fans downloading and sharing their songs on peer-to-peer sites. Rather than writing an angst-fueled heavy metal opus about how butt-hurt piracy makes them, Metallica sued Napster and won.

Now they're up to something like their old tricks again: Last Wednesday, Metallica invited several bloggers to a “listening party” for their upcoming album. Bloggers blog, so of course the sites run by the lucky music fans soon contained reviews of the six new Metallica songs they heard. Metallica did not like that at all and demanded the reviews be removed.

One site (The Quietus) says they were asked to pull their review in spite of not having signed an agreement not to talk about the record.

While we like the idea of aggro heavy metal dudes being unable to deal with internet clowns calling them "teh suck," all the reviews were positive anyway, so Metallica were just being a bunch of, well, b*tches--sending out lawyers to bother bloggers instead of banging groupies or smashing up hotel rooms like proper rock stars. (What the hell is wrong with modern rock stars anyway? Did you see that documentary about Metallica? How they were all whiny and going to therapy and dealing with sobriety and whatnot? Can you imagine a real rock star, like Keith Moon or Amy Winehouse, pulling that kind of weak-sauce stuff? No. You can't. But I digress.). Anyway, the reviews have been deleted and Metallica are presumably happy.

Good one, Metallica! Way to rock!

Those guys have sucked and been utterly useless since the mid 90's

little bitches

Posted by youenjoymyself - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:55 AM
you got to be kidding me... metallica should just go away...

Posted by torino_elite - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:56 AM
pretty much metallica lost my respect along time ago. After the black album was made thier music went down hill, then thier attitudes towards thier fans and ideas of what music should be about! Just my opinion.

Posted by UndiscoveredBum - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:01 AM
Yeah F metallica, like they don't have enough money, jeez. Get some rogaine dudes!

Posted by greyowl - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:11 AM
Another example of, "Be careful what you wish for or you may become the very thing you despised to begin with." So much for non-conformity, eh?

Posted by sleptwithghost - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:18 AM
Keith Moon is dead and Amy winehouse isnt rock. But yeah this is pretty damn lame.

I agree with everyone, but undiscoveredbum you are wrong. its the same shti that everyone was saying a few years ago. Metallica does not lose money its the hundreds of people who also work to produce that album (producers, engineers, technicians,etc.) they are obviously not the same long haired beer drinkin alcoholics that they were, and havent been for 13 years.

Posted by trkydk - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:38 AM
haha tenacious d is heavier then these morons. it must be becuase they could not afford their goldwing 5 and had to sell that and get the goldwing 4 that doesnt have the ipod jack and self whipping toilet..

Posted by UndiscoveredBum - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:39 AM
Actually I'm right, as Metallica does have plenty of money...All of the people that work to produce the album, should have gotten better contracts...But metallica does have plenty of money... Thanks for telling me I'm wrong though..Twice LoL

Posted by schreiter - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:43 AM
since the black album there has been no metallica.

If that was part of the "rules" of the listening party (and I'm guessing that's the case), then so be it.

However, when your last album (St. Anger) was so bad and panned by critics/fans everywhere, wouldn't you not mind so much when someone says something good about your music?!?!?

Metallica doesn't seem to understand the biz like they think they do.

Before Metallica came along there was no such thing as Bad Publicity. Then they blew that theory out of the water!!

Posted by Iclabgod - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:46 AM
I been a fan of Metallica since the Black Album. They invited the bloggers so they should respect the bloggers for voicing their opinions and take the critism like professionals.

Posted by altadonna - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:53 AM
I think you need to get your facts straight before you blame the sueing of napster all on Metallica

Posted by UndiscoveredBum - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:57 AM
@altadonna

Mr man, who would you say were the "ringleaders" of the napster sueing back in the day? I think most here would agree is is Metallica who LEADED it but certainly not the only artists involved in it.
Care to enlighten us?

Posted by Smartguy81 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:05 AM
@UndiscoveredBum

Different genre, but Garth Brooks was very heavy into the anti napster sue fest. Like I said, different genre but he carried the same clout Metallica did back in the day.

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:06 AM
Hey look, Metallica can't even get through a "listening party" (god thats lame) without going to pieces. No wonder they haven't written a worthwhile song in over a decade.

Posted by jodalmighty - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:12 AM
Metallica needs to throw in the towel so they can stop raping my fond memories of when they rocked and/or rolled. They went from being the banner wavers of metal to the diaper wearing cry babies they are now. Guys quit being wussies and get back to being metal or just fade to black.

Posted by CPRxChris - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:22 AM
I love Metallica, but after seeing this...I wished they would go play in traffic...

Posted by _Sunshine - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:31 AM
ofcourse metallica has money, theyre going to get there share no matter what...oh yea i guess they should have gotten better contracts, but i doubt they knew thousands of people would just download there songs instead of paying for it. anyways you have to point to your post

Posted by gaspanic - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:33 AM
i loved their last album, and justice for all. its about time they release a new album. 20 years later.

Posted by MadPaulKilla - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:33 AM
It's not that I really care for Metellica anything after the 80's for the most part, but it was the management that had the sites take down the reviews because they listened to incomplete non-mastered tracks I read about this on Wired the other day. However they had these guys that write reviews in blogs in all that and didn't even have them sign any disclosure forms or anything so yeah just letting you know.

Posted by _Sunshine - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:34 AM
amen jodalmighty amen

Posted by Tyranadin - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 10:51 AM
These guys should give up. They don't like people sharing their music, they don't like people writing "positive" reviews about their music. What about their miserable little lives do they like anymore? Apparently they hate everyone now, whether that person supports them or not.

Posted by MiDoJo - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:03 AM
BUMP ". They invited the bloggers so they should respect the bloggers for voicing their opinions "

duh!!!!!! Look, Selloutica, bloggers blog that's why they are bloggers, what did you expect them to do say "hey metallica just invited me to listen to their new songs, but I ain't gonna say nothing about it because no-one is really interested in reading what I say. After all dear blog readers you didn't come here to hear/read about my opinions or anything."

part two below

Posted by MiDoJo - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:05 AM
@Smartguy and @altadonna, yes it is true that other recording musicians (I refuse as an industry pro to call some of these wankers artists) also stood with LARS and his bandmates against napster, but none did such a turn around from their old persona than Metallica did. When they were justr young bucks starting out, in a genre thought to be dead with the dissolution of original members of Black Sabbath, Iron Madien, and other Metal Groups, they encouraged fans to record their albums and concerts onto cassette tape and pass them around.

It was a very public aboutface when Lars started publicly crying about Napster, so much so that they, not Garth Brooks (from whom the reaction to napster was understandable) who were Lampooned by Joe's Cartoons in the Famous "NAPSTER BAD" flash cartoon (which can be seen here www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIuR5T NyL8Y)

Fire BAd Fire Bad Grab-asses Bad

@MiDoJo

What you said is very true. However Metallica didn't bankroll the whole suit against Napster by themselves. Lots of popular musicians from all genres wrote checks for lawyers. This is where the music industry f'd up. They should have used this huge userbase as their new platform and figured out a way to make money instead of letting Apple steal this market sector years down the road.

Ya know, I'd still like to see Metallica again one more time. They may be a*Sholes on the net and about the net, but I still like their music and love their shows.

Posted by milhouse91 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 11:44 AM
Sounds like they are releasing St. Anger part 2

Posted by firefist - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 12:31 PM
Hard to believe that there are still peeps out there who like their music. Haven't bought one of their albums since '96. And that was a mistake. What a disappointment.

Posted by altadonna - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:06 PM
@ UndiscoveredBum
The main reason Metallica was the main sueing party was because they were pissed that someone had got a hold of there music before it was done being recorded and put it up on napster before the release date

Posted by outlawtorn_13 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:26 PM
altadonnas right they got ahold of I Disappear in its demo stage and put it on there. and you would be pissed too. when you put time and energy in to something you want in perfect before it goes out. and hell MetallicA can do whatever the F they want THEY ARE MetallicA!

Posted by torino_elite - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:42 PM
look i know i have already posted my say earlier, but to those of you who are defending them can't you see how lame thier music and attitudes have become? I mean common sueing your fans, they are as big of cry babies as the baseball playes who went on strike cus thier millions were not enough (not saying others have not but it still does not excuse bieng a cry baby). But the best part of all kicking dave mustain outta your band becuase he is to hard core of the rocker attitude, HAHA. then he goes and starts his own band which in my opinion is better anyway. but i am not hating i really do give them credit from ride the lightning to the black album.

Posted by thaiguy333 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 2:23 PM
Metallica rules. Get over it.

Posted by TKEmysterio - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 2:35 PM
@torino_elite

I gotta agree, I think Megadeth is better as well. At least Mustaine consistently pumps out great album after great album (ok, maybe not "Risk", but he's allowed one mistake).

Mustaine is the John Lennon of Metal. His lyrics can't be touched by anyone else in the metal world.

Posted by outlawtorn_13 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 5:04 PM
MUSTAINE=Lennon funniest thing i have heard in 26 years of life on this earth!
now LEMMY=GOD now there is the only truth to any statement that i have found.

Posted by xXRCXx - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 7:29 PM
Metallica is great

But don't blame Metallica on this, its their record company [Warner Brothers]

Posted by BladesOfChaos - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 7:59 PM
@TKEmysterio-
I beg to differ. Maybe you aren't as deep into the metal world as I am, but, and take note that this is all opinion, Mustaine is more than surpassed by the likes of Dani Filth and Dimmu Borgir (as a group, seeing as how both Silenoz and Shagrath are responsible for the lyrics).

Posted by ichaboddanger - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:13 PM
who listens to that turd of a band anyway? nobody knows anything about music and it makes me sick.

Posted by heavymetalwolf - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 8:18 PM
At least we still have Dave Mustaine releasing halfway decent music (once again a far stretch from heyday of that band (Megadeth), but i digress.
