This Metallica band.. they don't seem to understand the internet very well.
As you all (probably) know, in the heyday of Napster, the long-haired guitar fiddlers of Metallica took issue with fans downloading and sharing their songs on peer-to-peer sites. Rather than writing an angst-fueled heavy metal opus about how butt-hurt piracy makes them, Metallica sued Napster and won.
Now they're up to something like their old tricks again: Last Wednesday, Metallica invited several bloggers to a “listening party” for their upcoming album. Bloggers blog, so of course the sites run by the lucky music fans soon contained reviews of the six new Metallica songs they heard. Metallica did not like that at all and demanded the reviews be removed.
One site (The Quietus) says they were asked to pull their review in spite of not having signed an agreement not to talk about the record.
While we like the idea of aggro heavy metal dudes being unable to deal with internet clowns calling them "teh suck," all the reviews were positive anyway, so Metallica were just being a bunch of, well, b*tches--sending out lawyers to bother bloggers instead of banging groupies or smashing up hotel rooms like proper rock stars. (What the hell is wrong with modern rock stars anyway? Did you see that documentary about Metallica? How they were all whiny and going to therapy and dealing with sobriety and whatnot? Can you imagine a real rock star, like Keith Moon or Amy Winehouse, pulling that kind of weak-sauce stuff? No. You can't. But I digress.). Anyway, the reviews have been deleted and Metallica are presumably happy.
Good one, Metallica! Way to rock!

However, when your last album (St. Anger) was so bad and panned by critics/fans everywhere, wouldn't you not mind so much when someone says something good about your music?!?!?
Metallica doesn't seem to understand the biz like they think they do.
Before Metallica came along there was no such thing as Bad Publicity. Then they blew that theory out of the water!!
Mr man, who would you say were the "ringleaders" of the napster sueing back in the day? I think most here would agree is is Metallica who LEADED it but certainly not the only artists involved in it.
Care to enlighten us?
Different genre, but Garth Brooks was very heavy into the anti napster sue fest. Like I said, different genre but he carried the same clout Metallica did back in the day.
duh!!!!!! Look, Selloutica, bloggers blog that's why they are bloggers, what did you expect them to do say "hey metallica just invited me to listen to their new songs, but I ain't gonna say nothing about it because no-one is really interested in reading what I say. After all dear blog readers you didn't come here to hear/read about my opinions or anything."
part two below
It was a very public aboutface when Lars started publicly crying about Napster, so much so that they, not Garth Brooks (from whom the reaction to napster was understandable) who were Lampooned by Joe's Cartoons in the Famous "NAPSTER BAD" flash cartoon (which can be seen here www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIuR5T NyL8Y)
Fire BAd Fire Bad Grab-asses Bad
What you said is very true. However Metallica didn't bankroll the whole suit against Napster by themselves. Lots of popular musicians from all genres wrote checks for lawyers. This is where the music industry f'd up. They should have used this huge userbase as their new platform and figured out a way to make money instead of letting Apple steal this market sector years down the road.
Ya know, I'd still like to see Metallica again one more time. They may be a*Sholes on the net and about the net, but I still like their music and love their shows.
The main reason Metallica was the main sueing party was because they were pissed that someone had got a hold of there music before it was done being recorded and put it up on napster before the release date
I gotta agree, I think Megadeth is better as well. At least Mustaine consistently pumps out great album after great album (ok, maybe not "Risk", but he's allowed one mistake).
Mustaine is the John Lennon of Metal. His lyrics can't be touched by anyone else in the metal world.
now LEMMY=GOD now there is the only truth to any statement that i have found.
But don't blame Metallica on this, its their record company [Warner Brothers]
I beg to differ. Maybe you aren't as deep into the metal world as I am, but, and take note that this is all opinion, Mustaine is more than surpassed by the likes of Dani Filth and Dimmu Borgir (as a group, seeing as how both Silenoz and Shagrath are responsible for the lyrics).
