PS3 Chip Powers Fastest Computer

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Monday, June 09, 2008 11:08 AM

In news sure to provoke a flamewar, The New York Times is reporting that an American military supercomputer "Roadrunner," has reached a long-sought-after computing milestone by processing more than 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second. Why a flamewar? Because part of the machine's guts come from the PlayStation 3.

The world's fastest computer contains 116,640 processor cores, with 12,960 chips that are an improved version of the Cell processor at the heart of the PlayStation 3.  According to the NY Times, "The Sony chips are used as accelerators, or turbochargers, for portions of calculations."

Roadrunner consumes around the power required by a large suburban shopping center and requires three separate programming tools because it has three types of processors. Programmers have to figure out how to keep all of the 116,640 processor cores in the machine occupied simultaneously in order for it to run.

On a top-secret tour, I typed "10: Print 'Stephen Rulez!' 20: Goto 10" into the Roadrunner, and it totally printed "Stephen Rulez" over a hundred times a minute! That's fast!

Ok I wanna clean fight...No hiiting below the belt and try staying to topics that concern the news, and I want you to touch gloves when you come out of your corners. Ok...Flame!

Posted by xeno975 - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:29 AM

im still trying to figure, how something like this can start a flame war.
cuz on the real, if someone does, thats really sad.
but all in all good news for the american military.

Posted by LJbloaded - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:34 AM

It can start one by someone coming in here an just typing something like
"Whatever man the Blue-ray dis-k is slooowww as CR@ADKKAXjkln ckinscn"
I'm paraphrasing.
Or even " Cee!!!! this is why the Ps3 is the bes consle evar!!!!!!1 PS3FTW!!! and why everyone should get cnkc cbsabjuasc,k!!!"

Yeah and then the flaming begins.

Posted by gamemaster1102 - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:35 AM

i'm not surprised. PS3 is the best next-gen console!

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:35 AM

Seriously, when anything has 116,640 processors, its kind of hard to use it as a baseline in any flame war. That said I bet it'd kick the crap out of a gamecube

Posted by TKEmysterio - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:37 AM

I don't understand why this is news? It doesn't even refer to the actual components of the PS3. You say: "...with 12,960 chips that are an an improved version of the Cell processor at the heart of the PlayStation 3".

How does that have anything to do with the PS3 when they're admitting it's an improved version? I'm confused. How improved is it? And how much does it even resemble the PS3 component? These are questions that should be answered before an article like that is written.

Posted by dj8002 - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:40 AM

Yea, like Slaytanic said, considering it used several thousand other processors it is not like the computer was made possible just because of the PS3 cell processor and there is really no reason for a flame war to start. Although, when people get on here and say stuff like gamemaster1102 said, there is the ignition switch...

Posted by gamemaster1102 - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:41 AM

i'm not surprised. PS3 is the best next-gen console!

Posted by Smartguy81 - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:49 AM

By improved they must have meant "thought about it" while building this new chip.

1 quadrillion huh? What the hell are they doing?

Posted by cmdluke - Monday, June 9, 2008 11:52 AM

what the article doesn't say is that the first one they made cost millions of dollars and they used mostly the processors from the 360 cause it was cheaper, loads faster, and had a larger software library. When they switched it on for the first test run, they got the RROD. Damn you microsoft!!!!!!!

Posted by random_luigi07 - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:07 PM

@cmdluke lol thats the first time a post made me laugh, good one.

Posted by VergilSnake - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:08 PM

MGS4 anyone? I'm so freakin' excited. Haha, no MGS4 for you xbots.

Posted by Tmidiman - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:10 PM

I have no doubt the the processor in th PS3 is powerful and fast. The real question is how does it play games? What games are out for it?

You could have the fastest, fanciest, sports car there is, but if you need it to bake a cake it's not very useful is it.

Don't need a fancy DVD player. I need a great gaming system with the games to match.

Posted by DamienHell - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:13 PM

I don't get why this would start a flame war, well theres retards COUGHVergilSnakeCOUGH that WANT to start flame wars cause they have no lives COUGHgamemaster1102COUGH but really we ALL know the PS3 is an overpowered box of madness AND it was IMPROVED versions. Thats like saying that Ford made all the cars on the road because they all use improved version of the first car design (Henry Ford didn't invent the engine(look it up))

Posted by WhoF_INGwitSONY - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:19 PM

i have a ps3 been a playstation fan since the playstation dis is not news yea the ps3 is powerful and all but its up to the developers to tap into it

I'm really excited too. I got the Limited Edition from GameStop pre-order!

Any G4 article with "PS3" in the title, will atract all the Xbots, like Bee's to honey.

Flame War? Any positive article that mentions the PS3, will be scrutinized by the Xbots then reworded, twist facts, Fabricate stories and outright lie about it in thier post. A PS3 clicks on the article then reads the Xbotcomment, and ALA Flame War.

Here is a tip, if you don't like the Playstation 3 stop reading the articles and posting comments.

Posted by VergilSnake - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:34 PM

Btw, I got 100% on my Ps3's GTA4 copy, so don't reply saying, "OMGz U GOT GTA4 on YOUR 360 and NOT PS3, hahah."

Posted by Turthan_Natner - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:39 PM

wow, thats cool and all... maybe get some good exclusive games on it and itll be a passable electronic device...
and a word to sony fanboys: remember, it still took like 15 thousand ps3 chips to do this... thats not that much to brag over

Posted by SenRaq - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:41 PM

I just hope that the super cell processor chip in the playstation 3 can start pumping out games that look better than the 360. Side by side their is hardly a difference, and in some cases the 360 has better frame rates.

Anyhoo................got my reserve for MGS, and I hope that this game marks the beginning of greatness for the PS3.

Posted by slayter0 - Monday, June 9, 2008 12:54 PM

"...chips that are an _improved version_ of the Cell processor at the heart of the PlayStation 3."

a.k.a - 360 processor

Posted by Bookshelf - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:07 PM

"improved" means its using all eight of the Synergistic Processors along with the Main Processor. as i remember the PS3 Cell Processor only uses 7 of the 8 Synergistic Processors. One being reserved in case of one were to fail, it would use the reserve as a back up.

Posted by Bookshelf - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:10 PM

ill add to that....

its most likely they are running the Cell at its full 4ghz rather than the down clocked 3.2ghz version in the PS3.

so the Cell in the PS3...
3.2ghz
7 of the 8 Synergistic Processors

the "improved" Cell
4ghz
and using all 8 of the synergistic processors

...this is just my guess however.

who cares, that has nothing to do with gameing.

Posted by RgvXavi - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:14 PM

How is it that the processor in my ps3 can be a part of such a giant calculator and yet my ps3 can't even process an in game XMB? This new supercomputer using some advanced ps3 chips can calculate and triangulate all kinds numbers; yet my ps3 can't even process custom sound tracks. WTF?! Instead of dilly-dallying around Sony needs to work on these features as they are just a couple of reasons why my 360 is still getting played more than my ps3. However, I am glad I can pick up MGS4 in a couple days... just pissed that the ps3 architecture/infrastructure can't do what the 360 does even though I KNOW my ps3 is more powerful.Sony, Give me media/DLC on the PSN(at least 1/4 the library of Live), custom soundtracks(for ALL games) and a larger game library instead of helping the government create the worlds most expensive TI-85.

@carlos110481
you spelled gaming wrong.

owned.

Posted by DamienHell - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:25 PM

@VergilSnake
You try so hard to start flame wars don't you? I never mentioned 360s at all, you either you can't read or your trying to start a flame war. Theres no question which one it is

@DamienHell

No dude, I'm totally against them. Why don't you stop trying to make me seem like a fanboy, and quit of life, or get a PS3 as well, loser?

I own all consoles, and I'm grateful for that, but apprently jealousy overcomes people likes you to post in Positive/Negative PS3 posts.

Posted by ABYSSAL - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:41 PM

too bad the ps3 could never process physics and AI like the 360 for games, maybe the ps3 shouldve been made for counting numbers not playing games lol, ps3 is the worst console ever launched in history

Posted by DamienHell - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:42 PM

@VergilSnake
Wait wait wait, were you calling me a sony fanboy?? lol I don't own a PS3 and have no intention of buying a PS3 within the next 2 years

why is no one answering my question? scroll up to my previous comment and someone at least try to give me a proper answer.

Posted by SingleCrow - Monday, June 9, 2008 1:56 PM

RgvXavi.
Rumor is that an upcoming update for the PS3 will give you an in-game XMB. Hopefully that is true.
And asking for a custom soundtrack for ALL games doesn't make any sense. It's not up to Sony. It's up to the game developers.
Not even the 360 gives you an option for custom soundtracks in all games.

I personally have both consoles and love them both. Currently, my PS3 is played more than my 360. Not because of the online features. Not because of a difference between "dashboard" options. It's because of the games I'm playing. Which also has nothing to do with "exclusivity". Loving GTA IV right now.

Had I bought it for the 360, I'm sure I'd be playing my 360 more than my PS3.

What does that mean?
It's about the gaming. Not about the trivial differences in the consoles options.

Posted by enzospartan - Monday, June 9, 2008 2:09 PM

except for the record, this is all old news. the cell processor has been used in several other super computers since the launch of the ps3.

in other news: 3G IPHONE BABY!!! july 11th can't come fast enough!

Posted by RgvXavi - Monday, June 9, 2008 2:17 PM

Thanks for the genuine response SingleCrow. it may seem trivial to you but custom soundtracks and in-game XMB are a BIG deal to me. There are only so many times I can listen to Drama King (on Shade 45 for you SIRIUS subscribers) on 102.7 and the replay of the tracks on GTA IV. Which is why I bought my copy for my 360; so that I can play my own music when cruising the streets of LC. The in game XMB would be useful to see if there are any of my friends playing the same game I am without me having to exit my game and go to the XMB. Also, with the ps3 you can't communicate with your friend WHILE playing a game and if you can tell me how because I have not been able to do so since I got my ps3 a few months ago. I'm not dissing the ps3 because if I didn't like it I would not have dropped 5 bills of my hard earned money for the machine; I'm just saying for all that cash the ps3 should be able to do what the 360 does AND THEN SOME.

Posted by Minimoose360 - Monday, June 9, 2008 2:48 PM

This isn't even about consoles and people are flaming.

Ok so the military took a bunch of PS3s and crammed it into a box, big deal...the cell processor is IBM's, not Sony's.

Posted by BladesOfChaos - Monday, June 9, 2008 3:05 PM

@RgvXavi-
You want to communicate with your friends while playing?

Call them. I think I remember seeing somewhere an article on this new thing called phones.

On a more serious note, isn't VOIP functionality supposed to be added to the PS3?

Also, for Sony, an XMB would be kind of stupid to have. An Xbox Messenger Board in a Playstation? How about we call it an "in-game friends list"? And for that, allow me to make mention of a game here. Warhawk.

J/K I have both and still love my PS3.
How else would I play my Blu-Ray movies...or Metal Gear Solid?!?!

Posted by RgvXavi - Monday, June 9, 2008 3:19 PM

Blades:

your sarcasm is dully noted. I'm talking about talking over PSN while still playing a game, as in simultaneously. With Live I can play a game of Gears or whatever game I'm playing at the time, hit pause to see if a comrade is on, if so invite to private chat and still be able to chat and game at the same time over the headset. Maybe you can do this on the ps3 if so tell me how. And dude, you are still playing Warhawk? lol

Posted by codemonkeypwnz - Monday, June 9, 2008 4:05 PM

Okay screw you people who started the flmae war.
To sony boys: its uses many of the cell processors
To xbots: It wasn't an improved version of w.e the hell the xbox 360 uses...

Posted by SingleCrow - Monday, June 9, 2008 4:31 PM

RgvXavi
Yeah man. I am dying for a XMB to be added. I was sooooo pissed at Sony when I first got the PS3 because when doing downloads of demo's and content, there was no "Perform in background" option.
That should have been in there on ver1.0. Eventually, we got it.
I'm sure the XMB is coming soon.

I didn't even realize you could play your own soundtrack in GTA IV on the 360. The fact that the PS3 version doesn't have that makes me sick. I fully blame Rockstar for that. I know it can be done on the PS3 because I have played at least 1 game on my PS3 that allowed for using my own music. So, it can be done. The developers are just getting lazy. So sad.

Blades-
Dude. I hope that was just a sarcastic joke about XMB = Xbox Messenger Board.
If it wasn't, the XMB is the CrossMediaBar. It's what you use to navigate your PS3 content.

Posted by Whatsa - Monday, June 9, 2008 6:33 PM

@TKEmysterio

Haha fasho.

Anyways.. well sure, the PS3 chip is pretty powerful and fast.. but the overall performance of the PS3 would be slow as crap if not for the Multi-giga-bit download for every game you have to do.

Since I really don't think this has come up and I didn't take the time to read everyone's posts, I'd just like to comment that the Associated Press artical that G4 got this from doesn't specify which PS3 parts were taken either, but it does have some more fun stats for it.

@vergilsnake, and single crow

if you own all systems, then you are a fanboy of all of them, like me :)
i agree that there is massive benefits to owning ps3, 360, an wii...such as getting to play the best games, no matter exclusivity. i tend to play a lil bit more online on the 360, and get to enjoy final fantasy, mgs, and mario and zelda franchises on the wii....life's been good to the "universal gamer"

Posted by magopus6 - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:47 AM

correction-ff and mgs series on ps3, while mario and zelda on wii

Tmidiman says:

first off that's old... look at meta critic... for 2008 the PS3 has released more exclusive games with a score of 80 or above than the 360.... hope gears 2 works out for you in the fall... not much else happening on the 360 front tell then....

Also the gamers are suffering due to the 360 it and MS tactic to pay off every studio to continue making gimped games for the 360 is anchoring the gaming industry....

The Cell processor used in RoadRunner is vastly different to the PS3 version. The fact that it is a cell processor and still made by IBM are the only two similarities.

Posted by Markntosh - Sunday, July 13, 2008 9:04 PM

Yah, but the chip was developed by Sony, doesn't that mean something? I'll bet you $10 that if you got the right software you could put that advanced Cell processor in a PS3.
