A new platform-war may be brewing. Not between Sony and Microsoft, but between Apple and Nintendo. At issue:
Will the iPhone kill the Nintendo DS?
On Monday, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone App Store, so Iphone users can fill their phones with 3rd party applications, including games... and so the iPhone will essentially enter the handheld gaming market with a huge installed base of consumers, and a platform that allows for uses the PSP and DS only dream of. Like, say, quick wireless downloads, motion-sensing and, of course, talking to your friends on the phone. Spore is already coming out for iPhones, and other big titles are sure to follow.
We see a couple things coming from iPhones dip into gaming. Look for a more two-tiered system, with older people favoring the Iphone and Nintendo digging deeper into a kids market. After all, the DS is crazy cheap compared to an iPhone. We'll also probably see the next generation of DS soon. Nothing has been announced (or even leaked), but we imagine when the DS 2 hits, it will inspire awe.
